Chapter 4: Little Darling

Twenty minutes later, Xu Jiu sprinted back to the scene of the crime.

The drunkards in the alley had been completely replaced by a new batch, and Cao Weidong was long gone.

Xu Jiu smacked his forehead in frustration.

How could he curse me by my full name when he doesn’t even know what it is?

In the villain business, the worst mistake is committing misdeeds without leaving your name.

Grumpy, Xu Jiu walked out of the alley, where a mature, seductive woman reached out, hooked her finger through his collar, and pulled him closer.

Hey handsome, interested?

Xu Jiu looked her up and down, then tossed his luxury car keys in his hand and readily agreed.

Get in.

He drove the woman straight back to the Xu family villa in the city center. When she saw the extent of his wealth, her eyes nearly popped out, and she strained her voice until it nearly cracked.

Don’t force it. I prefer the husky, mature woman tone.

Xu Jiu prepared an outfit for her that was something his mother would wear at her age.

The woman was puzzled, but since some men do have mother fixations—and given that Xu Jiu was both rich and handsome—she didn’t refuse. Instead, she eagerly changed into it.

Emerging from the dressing room, she deliberately accentuated her curves, only to find Xu Jiu lying on the bed playing video games, completely ignoring her.

Annoyed, she sidled up to him, rubbing her body against his.

Xu Jiu immediately shifted away and pointed to a desk nearby. Go bring the glass of milk from the table.

Huh?

Confused, she did as she was told.

As she brought the milk to his lips, Xu Jiu continued giving orders. Say: ‘Precious son, it’s very late. Stop playing and go to bed now.’

Only then did the woman realize something was off. She froze, eyeing Xu Jiu with a strange look.

If you won’t say it, forget it. The money’s on the console table in the entryway. Goodnight, goodbye.

Xu Jiu tossed his game console aside and took a sip of milk.

Finally, the woman understood what was going on. Disgusted, she glared at him and snapped, Are you insane? So starved for affection you dragged me here in the middle of the night to play house?!

Xu Jiu admitted openly, Exactly.

Her gaze dropped to his lower body, and the answer became even clearer.

Xu Jiu hadn’t brought her back for a one-night stand—he’d only wanted to play house.

Damn it, you impotent pervert!

She snatched the milk glass and unhesitatingly splashed its contents all over him.

After cursing him out, she vigorously wiped her hands, muttering insults as she stormed off. Soon after, Xu Jiu’s phone buzzed with a notification that the villa’s front door had been opened and closed.

It’s not like I didn’t pay her. Was that really necessary…

Xu Jiu took another shower, then tossed and turned in bed until the early hours. Unable to sleep, he got up and made an international call.

A woman’s icy voice answered, What is it?

If not for the contact name labeled Mom, her tone was as cold as a coworker’s, all business and mechanical.

Xu Jiu lit a cigarette, thought for a moment, then said leisurely, Mom, I got someone pregnant at school. The baby’s already born. What should I do?

… After a brief silence, she retorted with a single word: Useless.

Exhaling a plume of smoke contentedly from his chest, Xu Jiu thought, Well said—at least we’re not just colleagues anymore.

Mom, I was kidding. I just missed you.

The call cut off at the word kidding, leaving only the dial tone echoing in Xu Jiu’s ears.

The next morning, Xu Jiu eagerly went to school, hoping to force an encounter with Cao Weidong and then announce his own illustrious name.

Cao Weidong? He’s taken leave.

The third day—not there.

The fourth day—not there.

…

Xu Jiu kept watch until the fifteenth day, finally prying information from Cao Weidong’s academic advisor.

Cao Weidong was injured and hospitalized, not yet discharged.

Could you tell me which hospital, which department, and what bed number? I had a minor disagreement with him earlier and want to apologize. Look, I’ve already bought apples and milk—can’t let them go to waste, right?

Second People’s Hospital of H City, Orthopedics, Bed 21.

Xu Jiu hurried excitedly to the hospital, but the orthopedic nurse told him, He was discharged days ago. He said he missed too many classes and had to return to school.

Xu Jiu was stunned.

Not at school, not at the hospital—where else could he be?

Only working at a bar.

Xu Jiu searched all over H City and finally managed to stake out Cao Weidong at a bar. But every time Xu Jiu showed up, Cao Weidong would vanish from the bar.

Xu Jiu had no choice but to secretly send someone else to monitor the bar.

In the end, Xu Jiu faced the reality of two months running back and forth: when he went to school, Cao Weidong returned to the bar; when Xu Jiu went to the bar, Cao Weidong went back to school.

He firmly believed that Cao Weidong had truly taken to heart those words—If you see me, remember to steer clear.

What have you been busy with lately? I heard you’re always following Cao Weidong around, going wherever he goes. Are you two that close?

Xu Jiu propped his head in his hands, scratching his hair irritably.

Close my ass, Xu Jiu cursed.

Then why are you tailing him? Don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen for him? Are you really gay?!

Xu Jiu looked at the green-haired guy beside him with a teasing expression. Answering yes or no to this question felt equally awkward.

Annoyed, Xu Jiu grabbed a brand-new book nearby, randomly flipped it open, pointed at a page, and said, There’s a problem I can’t solve. I want to ask him.

Cao Weidong ranked first in the law department every year, never missing a scholarship.

You’re a math major, and you’re asking him?!

Xu Jiu retorted confidently, Why not?

Law doesn’t require advanced math.

Pan Yu lightly punched the top of Xu Jiu’s head, and Xu Jiu pretended to yelp in pain.

If you really want to find him, just go to his place.

Pan Yu’s words struck Xu Jiu like a wake-up call.

Xu Jiu tossed the book aside and slipped out the back door of the classroom.

Xu Jiu hadn’t been to the bar for a while, so Cao Weidong must be working his part-time job there.

So Xu Jiu scouted the bar’s back door in advance, waiting for Cao Weidong to finish his shift.

Xu Jiu stood under a streetlight, a cap pulled low over his head, a mask covering his face, and deliberately wore all black today.

Surely, he wouldn’t attract Cao Weidong’s attention.

Sure enough, as the bar lights went out, Cao Weidong emerged carrying two heavy bags of trash, tossed them into the bin, then slung his crumpled, paper-thin black backpack over his shoulder and plunged into the darkness.

Xu Jiu quickly followed.

Cao Weidong wound through the alleyways, turning left and right, never quite making it out of the maze.

Xu Jiu wondered, does Cao Weidong live in the sewers?

Cao Weidong never stopped walking, and Xu Jiu struggled to keep up. Unfamiliar with the route and with the night dark, he made many unintended noises and rustles without realizing it.

At a fork in the road, Cao Weidong suddenly stopped walking, startling Xu Jiu into halting as well.

After a moment, Cao Weidong resumed his usual pace and turned left. Xu Jiu hurried to catch up.

Light from the alley entrance slanted inward, illuminating the path ahead.

Xu Jiu stood precisely on the borderline between light and shadow, glancing left and right in confusion.

Just as he was wondering how Cao Weidong had vanished in the blink of an eye, a hand abruptly clamped around his neck while another covered his mouth, forcibly dragging him into the darkness.
