Chapter 23: My Turn!

After leaving only the words Your turn, Cao Weidong fell silent.

But he didn’t hang up, as if deliberately waiting for Xu Jiu’s reaction.

Xu Jiu didn’t give him the satisfaction. After cursing him as a lunatic, he decisively ended the call with a sharp click.

Lunatic.

Cao Weidong mimicked the tone of Xu Jiu’s words, repeating them once more, half in acknowledgment, half in mockery.

Then, he released his grip.

Pan Yu, who had been held by the hair at his side, collapsed to the ground with a thud. He rolled once in the mud, coating himself in filth, yet showed no reaction—clearly, he had completely lost consciousness.

Cao Weidong’s left hand was drenched in blood, so dark it appeared almost black. It clung to his skin like sentient mud, writhing and burrowing into every crevice between his fingers until both his palm and the back of his hand were smeared with the warm, foul stench.

Cao Weidong wiped his hand casually on his clothes, then switched the phone to his left hand. The moment his right hand relaxed, his entire right arm began to tremble uncontrollably, shaking with an unstoppable frenzy.

The uncontrollable spasms of his right arm stood in stark contrast to Cao Weidong’s unnerving calm.

The boy lying unconscious and in shock at his feet meant no more to Cao Weidong than water trickling through his fingers—hardly worthy of even a glance.

Cao Weidong looked up at the electronic surveillance camera mounted high above. The dangerous red dot of its lens stared back at him.

He dialed the police, his voice steady and clear: Hello, I’d like to report a case of school bullying resulting in severe injury.

An ambulance and a police car arrived simultaneously at the back door of the bar. Cao Weidong got into the police car.

Yes, I’m the victim.

And so, the night came to an end.

Cao Weidong spent the night sleeping with his head on a desk at the police station. Xu Jiu drifted into a restless sleep, soothed by the woman pretending to be his mother. Pan Yu lay unconscious in a hospital bed.

The following afternoon, Xu Jiu was at a hair salon, preparing to re-dye his roots pink, which had grown out completely black.

News of Pan Yu’s hospitalization buzzed through his phone, startling him so much that he leaped from the salon chair and rushed straight to the hospital.

Who did this? Xu Jiu pushed the door open urgently. Pan Yu’s head was wrapped almost entirely like a mummy’s, with only his nose, eyes, and mouth visible.

Pan Yu, who had been loudly boasting and making threats just moments before, fell silent instantly and signaled with his eyes for the others to keep quiet.

Who? Xu Jiu pressed again.

Pan Yu recalled Cao Weidong’s sudden burst of madness that night and glanced at his slender, seemingly fragile friend. After weighing his options, he forced out four words:

None of your business.

Pan Yu had thought it through clearly: Xu Jiu was no match for Cao Weidong.

Cao Weidong had no parents, no attachments. If he were to strike Xu Jiu down with a single blow, it would be a pointless loss—after all, Cao Weidong had nothing left to lose.

What do you mean, ‘none of my business’? Aren’t we brothers?

This has nothing to do with you.

Suddenly, Xu Jiu remembered Pan Yu going to see Cao Weidong the previous night and the words Cao Weidong had spoken to him. His expression turned grave. Was it Cao Weidong?

Pan Yu waved his hand and shook his head. No.

Xu Jiu was certain. Then it was.

A line of text flashed through Xu Jiu’s mind, each word hammering into his consciousness in Cao Weidong’s voice:

Your turn

Finally, Xu Jiu understood the meaning behind Cao Weidong’s words.

My turn.

The protagonist’s revenge has begun, so now it’s my turn.

I’m going to find him.

After leaving these words, Xu Jiu turned and walked away.

While still in the hospital lobby after exiting the elevator, Xu Jiu took out his phone and called Cao Weidong. The default ringtone of his old-fashioned phone suddenly blared—from within the crowd right in front of Xu Jiu.

Following the sound, Xu Jiu actually spotted Cao Weidong.

Cao Weidong was exceptionally tall and pale, always surrounded by an eerie, lifeless aura. Since he only wore his high school uniform, he was definitely not someone who could easily blend into a crowd.

But the hospital lobby was surging with people, waves upon waves pushing into Xu Jiu’s field of vision, one after another. By the time Xu Jiu cleared the human tide from his eyes, Cao Weidong had vanished from the crowd.

After two beeps sounded from Xu Jiu’s phone, Cao Weidong answered, and simultaneously the ringtone in the crowd disappeared.

Where are you? Xu Jiu asked him.

Cao Weidong remained silent.

Speak! Xu Jiu commanded him.

Cao Weidong’s breathing came through the phone receiver into Xu Jiu’s ear, as if a real breath was blowing directly into his ear, making the tips of his ears prickle.

Xu Jiu rubbed his ear vigorously, his gaze instinctively scanning both sides, but he saw no sign of Cao Weidong.

Xu Jiu cursed into the phone, hung up, and called again.

Just as Xu Jiu expected, the ringtone sounded once more.

But not in front of him—it came from behind, directly behind him.

At the same time, the call connected.

Cao Weidong, as usual, didn’t speak, just listened quietly.

Cao Weidong began to breathe, a thin stream of air blowing past Xu Jiu’s earlobe.

It didn’t come from the phone receiver but was real air blowing from behind Xu Jiu.

Xu Jiu was instantly horrified; that breath made all the hairs on his back stand on end.

How could he suddenly appear behind me when he was just in front of me moments ago, with the phone ringing right there?

It was like a ghost, like a spirit clinging to his shoulders.

In the afternoon, the hospital lobby was a continuous, bursting flow of people, like a breached dam. Countless individuals brushed past Xu Jiu, the noise around him boiling like a kettle screaming on a stove.

The lights were stark and blinding, forcing people to squint.

Yet Xu Jiu felt no trace of human warmth, as if Cao Weidong had dragged him into that dark, deathly aura. His entire body turned cold, trembling uncontrollably.

Earlier, he had been fiercely determined to confront Cao Weidong, but now only fear remained. A surge of inexplicable terror rose within him; towards Cao Weidong, fear always outweighed hatred, affection, or any other emotion.

Xu Jiu’s courage shrank. He didn’t dare turn around, instead clutching his phone with both hands and uttering a low question: You’re behind me, aren’t you?

Without waiting for Cao Weidong’s response, Xu Jiu gritted his teeth and forced himself to turn around.

He knew Cao Weidong wouldn’t answer him anyway—Cao Weidong enjoyed engaging in cold, violent behaviors, leaving Xu Jiu to scare himself.

Xu Jiu took a deep breath, raised his head and eyes, and after locating his target, he swallowed the foul air he had inhaled straight down into his stomach.

A wall of black filled his vision. The two were extremely close, almost nose to forehead. When Xu Jiu lifted his head, it became nose to nose, exchanging breaths.

The spiderweb in Cao Weidong’s eyes began weaving again, nearly gluing their gazes together when Xu Jiu pushed him away and retreated before becoming unable to break eye contact.

Xu Jiu hammered his fist against Cao Weidong’s shoulder, pointing at his nose and cursing, Cao Weidong, you’re truly insane! If you have issues, come at me. This has nothing to do with Pan Yu.

Cao Weidong showed no reaction, but the corners of his mouth tightened when he heard Pan Yu’s name from Xu Jiu’s lips.

Don’t touch Pan Yu. If you want to fight or kill, come at me. I’ll play with you.

Xu Jiu’s mouth felt dry from talking, his pink tongue darting out to lick his lower lip.

Xu Jiu’s words were purely about marking territory – wanting to confine Cao Weidong within a small circle containing only the two of them, then submitting to any beating or killing without letting Cao Weidong’s hatred scatter elsewhere.

But to Cao Weidong’s ears, it sounded completely different.

Xu Jiu cared deeply about Pan Yu. After just one hit and minor injury, he urgently came seeking confrontation.

Did you hear me clearly? It’s my turn now!

That pink hair of Xu Jiu’s rampaged through Cao Weidong’s vision again, like flames whipped by wind – each gust making the fire core flicker dozens of times, blazing and crackling against Cao Weidong’s pitch-black pupils.

Xu Jiu grew somewhat excited, lowering his voice but unable to suppress his eager tone: It’s my turn now! Choke my neck, grab my hair, slam me against the wall until my head splits open and brains spill out.
