Novel Info

When ghosts appeared before, no matter how terrifying the situation, Beibei would always stay with Li Chenguang, offering him advice and strategies.

But this time, Li Chenguang had already been listening to the female ghost sing for a long time, and she still lay there silently, with no reaction whatsoever.

A premonition of dread struck Li Chenguang’s heart, his heart pounding wildly. His gaze finally moved from the picture frame, slowly shifting to his girlfriend beside him.

Beibei’s clothes were not yet on, her body ample, her skin fair. Under normal circumstances, on an ordinary night, she would have been exceptionally enchanting and alluring.

But at this moment, he felt only terror.

“Baby?” his voice trembled as he tentatively called out, “What’s… what’s wrong with you?”

Beibei said nothing. Her eyes stared straight at the ceiling, her face expressionless, and around her glabella, a faint black aura seemed to linger.

Cold sweat trickled down Li Chenguang’s forehead. He bravely reached out and patted Beibei’s face.

“Baby, answer me, are you okay? You…”

His words abruptly stopped, the unfinished latter half of his sentence getting stuck in his throat. Beibei’s face was wet and sticky; a normal person’s skin shouldn’t feel like that.

He tremblingly withdrew his hand, discovering that his fingertips were actually covered in blood and tiny fragments of flesh.

On Beibei’s face before him, five clear, bloody, and mangled finger marks had appeared.

Pus and blood flowed down her cheeks, and where it ran, the skin in other areas also gradually began to crack and bleed.

Li Chenguang’s body began to tremble frantically.

He opened his mouth wide but couldn’t scream; he could only raise his hand and vigorously wipe Beibei’s skin, trying to clean the blood.

But not only did it not clean off, the areas he wiped began to fester even more rapidly.

Beibei’s skin and flesh were peeling off in chunks with his movements, fresh blood staining the bedding, and in some places, even bare white bones were exposed.

She was like shattered tofu, completely rotted beyond human form, with only a pair of dark eyes still staring at the ceiling.

Her body made soft squishing sounds, and after a while, countless yellowish-white maggots crawled out from her broken flesh and blood.

On the floor, the woman in the picture frame, dressed in a blood-stained white wedding dress, continued to repeat the last segment of the song as if stuck on a loop.

“May the woman you caress bleed endlessly,

One night of passion was not, was not my fault;

May the woman you caress rot,

One night of passion was not, was not my fault…”

✵✵✵

No one screamed last night, so Xiaohui, upon waking up this morning, assumed no one had died.

Stepping out of the room, she looked around and saw that the second-floor corridor was calm.

“Miss Fu, it seems nothing happened last night.”

Fu Lanyu squinted, yawning. “That might not be the case.”

“Hmm?”

Qiao Yunzheng emerged from his room, just hearing that remark. He smiled leisurely.

“Ghosts don’t do charity. If they didn’t kill on the second floor, they killed on the third floor.”

After speaking, he and Fu Lanyu exchanged glances.

“Miss Fu, what do you think?”

“I think that makes sense.”

Xiaohui was puzzled. “What’s with you two exchanging knowing glances? Are you hiding something from me?”

“What could I be hiding from you? Just getting you through the level is enough,” Fu Lanyu said. “Anyway, your goal is to lie back and win.”

“…”

Xiaohui had to admit she was right.

Just then, the door at the end of the corridor opened, and Kiki timidly peeked out. Seeing the three of them, Kiki seemed relieved.

“Was everyone okay last night?”

“I slept pretty well, better than the past two nights,” Xiaohui said. “Didn’t hear any unusual sounds either.”

Kiki brightened upon hearing this. “That’s good. I’ll go wake Wang Xin up.”

She ran lightly up the stairs. Soon after, just as Xiaohui was thinking of asking Fu Lanyu to accompany her to the kitchen, a scream suddenly came from the third floor.

Such a scream was re-enacted every morning.

“…Someone really died?”

Fu Lanyu glanced at her, saying casually, “In a place like this, death shouldn’t be a rare occurrence, right?”

“…”

That was logical, yet it sounded quite unsettling.

The three went upstairs and arrived at Wang Xin’s room door.

They saw Kiki sprawled by the bed, embracing Wang Xin’s already stiff corpse, crying hysterically. It was understandable, considering there were initially four newcomers.

Now that Wang Xin was also dead, Kiki had lost her only teammate to huddle with. How could she not be sad?

However…

Fu Lanyu walked to the bed and examined Wang Xin’s corpse, feeling a rare hint of surprise.

He had been stabbed through the heart with a dagger, dying instantly.

The previous two, the tall man and the bespectacled man, had both been dismembered and made into dinner.

Why did the female ghost give Wang Xin a quick death instead?

She tugged up Wang Xin’s sleeve, seeing his right hand clenched into a fist, unreleased even in death. She used one finger to pry open Wang Xin’s fist.

As she felt the object in his palm, her eyebrow slightly raised, and the confusion in her mind was instantly resolved.

Kiki was still wailing. “Wang Xin is dead too. Next… will I be the next to die…?”

Fu Lanyu sighed, her expression full of pity, but her answer was, “Very likely.”

“…”

Kiki immediately cried even louder.

Not far away was the couple’s room, from which no one had emerged.

Xiaohui couldn’t restrain herself and quietly walked over to check the situation, finding the door unlocked and ajar.

She cautiously pushed the door open a crack. Through the gap, she could clearly see the scene inside the room, and naturally, she immediately saw the bed pressed against the wall.

That was…

“Ahhhhhh—!!”

She suddenly let out a shrill scream, stumbling back several steps, almost falling backward. Fortunately, Fu Lanyu, passing by, was quick to react and caught her.

“So you also have the potential for a dolphin scream.”

Xiaohui’s eyes were bloodshot, and she trembled like a sieve, barely able to stand steadily by clutching Fu Lanyu’s clothes. She cried, “That… that woman is dead too…”

“Oh,” Fu Lanyu nodded. “How did she die?”

“It’s… it’s… I can’t describe it…”

Xiaohui nearly broke down just from recalling it; she covered her mouth and went to the restroom to vomit.

Qiao Yunzheng watched this scene, a half-smile on his face. “Your client’s psychological resilience is a bit lacking.”

“Have you ever seen a bronze-level player with exceptionally good psychological resilience?”

“You have a point, but I’m very curious about what exactly happened in the room.”

“I’m curious too.”

So the two of them huddled together, squeezing to the room’s doorway.

Okay, this time they saw it clearly. Beibei lay on the bed, unclothed, her body a festering mess like a bloody gourd, from face to foot, covered in plump maggots.

Li Chenguang sat slumped on the floor by the bed, his eyes vacant, his face pale and withered, as if his soul had been sucked out.

And in his arms, he was still holding that picture frame.

The cracks in the picture frame’s glass had disappeared, looking as good as new. The woman on it was still wearing the vibrant Xiuhe dress, adorned with peonies, her smile serene.

Fu Lanyu mused, “These two seem to have fulfilled those lyrics.”

—May the woman you caress bleed endlessly, one night of passion was not my fault.

—May the woman you caress rot, one night of passion was not my fault.

Qiao Yunzheng smiled very gently. “They really did choose the red bridal gown.”

“Naturally, they were bound to choose it.”

Yesterday, in the house with the bloody handprint, what he and she had hung on the wall was indeed the white wedding dress frame.

That picture frame was, in fact, the correct answer. In the backstory of this ballad, the female protagonist became a vengeful ghost after poisoning herself.

That’s why the pure white wedding dress she wore before her death turned blood-colored. The red bridal gown was the wrong choice; it would invite ghosts.

He and she hadn’t even discussed it in detail; they had just improvised a scene, solely for the couple to see.

The choice was in their hands; those who wished to take the bait would.

Xiaohui finally finished vomiting. She shuffled towards Fu Lanyu, asking weakly, “Is that man in the room okay?”

Fu Lanyu was succinct. “Don’t know.”

“…”

As if to answer her question, Li Chenguang suddenly moved. The picture frame slipped from his arms, landing on the floor with a thud.

He remained dazed for a long time, then turned to look at his girlfriend on the bed, before slowly rising and walking towards the door with zombie-like steps.

Xiaohui tensed, instinctively shrinking behind Fu Lanyu.

The moment he saw Fu Lanyu and Qiao Yunzheng, Li Chenguang’s previously vacant and scattered eyes refocused.

On his numb face, a malicious and resentful expression vaguely appeared. It was the look of someone who wanted to die together with them.

He stared straight at them for a long time, then, through gritted teeth, uttered a single sentence.

“No one is getting out alive.”
