Chapter 12

After turning around, Luo Qian didn’t walk far before she stopped, looking towards South Garden for a long time. Her eyes deepened, and she clenched her fists. Finally, she closed her eyes and said, “Go to the Pear Garden.”

She couldn’t rest assured without seeing Concubine Qing in person. In her past life, the person she owed the most apology to was Concubine Qing. In this life, she must protect Concubine Qing!

When Luo Qian arrived at the Pear Garden, she saw two or three maids dressed neatly standing at the entrance. Behind them were a few young servants holding trays with unknown things on them.

The remaining two or three servants of the Pear Garden were blocking the group nervously, but the group seemed determined to barge in. Luo Qian vaguely heard the leading maid say loudly, “The Madam told us to deliver the tonic to Concubine Qing. How can the people of the Pear Garden not listen to the Madam’s words?”

Luo Qian’s expression changed instantly. She walked quickly to the entrance of the Pear Garden with her people. The people of the Pear Garden’s eyes lit up, and they seemed to see a savior. They whispered, “Eldest Miss.”
Their voices seemed to contain hidden sobs.

Luo Qian felt her fingers trembling with anger. She didn’t have time to comfort the people of the Pear Garden. Instead, she turned around to block the group and said coldly, “What are you doing!”

The leading maid’s eyes flickered when she saw Luo Qian, and her tough attitude softened a bit. She smiled, “Eldest Miss, don’t be nervous. The Madam just asked us to deliver a bowl of tonic to Concubine Qing.”

Luo Qian’s gaze shifted to the tray, and she saw a bowl of dark, gooey medicine on it. Her fingertips dug into her palm. No matter how she told herself to stay calm, she couldn’t help but feel a chill in her heart.

She didn’t dare to think about what would happen to Concubine Qing if she hadn’t backed down and still insisted on seeing the Old Madam. She knew that the people in front of her, although claiming to follow the Madam’s orders, were actually instigated by Luo Yi’er, who had just blocked her!

Luo Qian’s eyes darkened, but she still forced herself to say, “Thank you for your trouble. I’ll personally deliver the tonic to Concubine Qing.”

“Look at what the eldest miss is saying? You’re the master, how can you do such things?” The maid smiled leisurely, showing no signs of urgency.

Luo Qian’s expression turned cold, and her cool gaze fixed on the maid. She said word by word, “I said, just hand over the medicine to me! Can’t you understand?”

The maid was taken aback by her gaze, but she soon regained her composure. She smiled faintly, revealing a hint of sarcasm, though very subtle. Knowing her task was done, she had no need to confront Luo Qian further.
She smiled seemingly respectfully, “Since the eldest miss insists on serving Concubine Qing, I won’t force the issue. Yi, hand over the tonic to the eldest miss.”

The servant holding the tray silently handed it over to Luo Qian. Luo Qian took it with a stern face. The maid then said, raising her chin, “I’ll take my leave.”

With that, she led her group away, looking more imposing than Luo Qian’s group from a distance.

After the group left, Luo Qian closed her eyes, feeling the clothes on her back getting wet, bringing a cool sensation. She smiled wryly, thinking about what she could have done if the maid had insisted on entering.

Biyu looked at her with concern, but Luo Qian took a deep breath and said, “I’m fine.”

Biyu didn’t know what to say. She glanced at the tray still being held by Luo Qian and suggested, “Miss, let me take it.”

“No need,” Luo Qian said stiffly. She felt like throwing the tray to the ground, but she restrained herself. She knew that giving in to impulse would only give others a handle. If she threw the tray today, rumors about her disrespecting her mother would spread tomorrow. Living under others’ control, one’s actions were never truly one’s own.

Qingling stood behind Luo Qian, watching her every move and silently noting everything without saying a word.

As Luo Qian entered the Pear Garden with the tray, she saw Concubine Qing leaning against the doorframe, still looking somewhat uneasy. Luo Qian’s eyes suddenly welled up, and she couldn’t help but redden.
She quickly walked over and wanted to hug Concubine Qing, but with the tray in her hands, she eventually gave up on the idea. She forced a smile and called out, “Aunt.”

Concubine Qing couldn’t help but shed tears: “It’s Concubine who’s dragged you down.”

The two entered the room, and Luo Qian sent all the servants out, leaving only her and Concubine Qing in the room. She first put down the tray and poured the medicine from the bowl into a pot, finally feeling relieved.
She collapsed onto the chair.

Even though she knew Luo Yi’er wouldn’t dare to directly send poison to Concubine, who could guarantee it? She didn’t dare to take even a one-in-a-million chance, especially considering the colorless and hard-to-detect poisons she had seen in her past life.

Concubine Qing wiped away her tears beside her. As a former head maid of Madam Chu, she wasn’t foolish. She knew today’s incident seemed to target her but was actually aimed at Qian’er.

Luo Qian used a handkerchief to wipe the corners of her eyes and forced a stiff smile at Concubine Qing, “Aunt, don’t cry. It’s okay. Don’t blame yourself. You’re not the one dragging me down. It’s me who’s always been a burden to you!”

She suddenly couldn’t hold back her tears and burst into sobs. Whether in her past life or this one, her Aunt had always been obedient and dutiful. It was her fault!
She had wrongly trusted vile people and caused her Aunt to lose her life!

She wouldn’t forgive those two vile women!

Concubine Qing wanted to comfort her but didn’t know where to start. Luo Qian suddenly threw herself into Concubine Qing’s arms and said between sobs, “Aunt, please! Please take care of yourself! Qian’er only has you left!”

Concubine Qing’s eyes turned sour, and she quickly hugged her, “Eldest Miss, what’s wrong? Tell Concubine about it.”

Luo Qian shook her head in her arms, biting her lip and crying softly, not daring to let the people outside hear. She didn’t dare to say anything. After a while, she finally stopped crying and wiped away her tears. She forced a smile and said to Concubine Qing, “Aunt, don’t worry. I’m fine.”

After saying this, she didn’t dare to stay any longer. She stood up, straightened her clothes, and said softly, “I’m going back.”

Staying would only make Concubine more noticeable to others.

Concubine Qing was also worried and didn’t dare to keep her. She stood up and walked with her for a few steps, then held onto the doorframe, watching as she left the Pear Garden. Her heart felt empty, her daughter was still so young, yet she had to face so much alone.
And she, Concubine Qing, couldn’t help her at all.

In South Garden, not long after Luo Yu’an left, Concubine Su finally reacted to her miscarriage and confinement. She collapsed, holding her head and crying hysterically. She asked Hongyu disbelievingly, “I had a miscarriage?”

She seemed a bit abnormal, her hair was messy, and she didn’t look like her usual delicate and charming self.
Hongyu looked at her, feeling a pang in her heart. After a while, she cried and said, “Concubine, don’t be like this. There’s still a next time.”

“A next time? Ha ha, a next time…” Concubine Su suddenly laughed, her laughter more painful than her crying.
Big tears rolled down her cheeks, “A next time? The Marquis has already abandoned me! There won’t be a next time!”

Hongyu held onto her, stopping her frantic movements, and shouted loudly, “Concubine, you can’t move like this! You just had a miscarriage, you have to take care of yourself!”

Concubine Su suddenly calmed down for a moment. Hongyu sniffled and tentatively let go of her, but she was suddenly pushed away. Concubine Su’s eyes, which were usually full of charm, were filled with malice, “Where is the Eldest Miss? Why didn’t she come?”

“I-I don’t know…”

Concubine Su suddenly went crazy, “Didn’t she say I couldn’t get pregnant? If it weren’t for her, how could I have fallen out of favor with the Marquis? She’s abandoning me now!”

“Good! Good for the Eldest Miss!” Concubine Su grabbed Hongyu’s shoulders fiercely, her eyes filled with abnormal hatred. She suddenly leaned in close to Hongyu’s ear and said softly, “I want her to pay for my child!”

Hongyu shivered all over, staring blankly at Concubine Su. But then she saw Concubine Su smile charmingly, her smile full of allure. However, Hongyu felt something was off, and the room felt icy cold, penetrating to the bone.

In Yunxia Courtyard, Luo Yi’er lay reclined on a couch, with a white jade chessboard on a nearby table. She held a white chess piece in her delicate hand, resting her chin on her other hand as she thought. However, her thoughts seemed distracted, and her eyes contained a hint of a smile.

Linglong, standing beside her, was reporting on the situation in South Garden in a low voice. After finishing, Linglong hesitated slightly, frowning and saying, “Miss, we just got news from Qingling that Xiaoxi from the kitchen passed by Lingyun Pavilion several times, but there was no contact. So, we can’t determine if she’s working for the Eldest Miss.”

Luo Yi’er placed a piece on the board with a gentle movement, her voice soft, “Investigate.”

Linglong bowed her head, “Miss, this servant feels that…”

“Feels what?” Luo Yi’er raised an eyebrow, seeing Linglong’s hesitant expression.

“Recently, there have been so many incidents in the mansion. This servant observes that the Eldest Miss is cautious and intelligent. And Qingling doesn’t seem as trusted by the Eldest Miss as before. So, this message…”

Luo Yi’er put down the chess piece and picked up a cup of tea, leaning against the window with a smile in her eyes, “So, you’re thinking that Qingling’s message might be incorrect?”

Linglong shook her head and said cautiously, “This servant is worried that the message was deliberately sent by the Eldest Miss through Qingling.”

Luo Yi’er took a sip of tea, her beautiful eyes slightly lowered, making it hard to read her expression. Her voice seemed to carry a smile, “In that case, do you think Qingling is still trustworthy?”

Linglong was startled, looking up at Luo Yi’er suddenly. But all she saw was Luo Yi’er with a hint of a smile on her lips, carrying a hint of coolness. Linglong felt a chill rising from her feet, and she lowered her head, her face slightly pale, “This servant thinks she wouldn’t dare.”

At this moment, Linglong felt a chill in her heart.
Did Miss mean… Qingling had betrayed her master? But how was that possible?
How could Qingling dare? She believed it was more likely that the Eldest Miss deliberately made Qingling think Xiaoxi was from Lingyun Pavilion.

Luo Yi’er glanced at her and suddenly laughed softly. Linglong was taken aback, not understanding, “Miss, you…”

“Don’t overthink it. Just go investigate Xiaoxi. If she’s from Lingyun Pavilion, that’s great. If she’s not…”

Luo Yi’er’s eyes looked out the window, her voice gentle, “If she’s not, then it’s even more important to know who she is. Someone who can make my dear sister go to such great lengths.”

Linglong responded, but after a while, she hesitated, “What about Qingling?”

Luo Yi’er took a sip of tea, her lips curling up slightly.
She said word by word, “Just as you said, she doesn’t have the guts.”

Hearing her words, Linglong wasn’t sure if she should feel relieved. She could only bow her head, her voice respectful, “Yes, this servant will go take care of it.”
