Chapter 46: The Eldest Daughter’s Favor; Promotion to Lantern Envoy

The Blood Shadow Eldest Daughter, seated in her sedan chair, softened her voice considerably when addressing Li Yan.

“Come closer, let this young lady get a good look at you.”

“How old are you?”

Li Yan, bold and skilled, stood amidst the throng of Shadow Fiends without a trace of fear. Unfazed, he brazenly blended into their ranks.

Using his shadow to speak, he replied, “Reporting to the Eldest Daughter, this humble one is just over twenty.”

The Eldest Daughter threw her head back and giggled, her delicate frame swaying with amusement. “Silly boy,” she chided, “I wasn’t asking about your physical age, but when you awakened.”

“Oh, I only awakened yesterday.”

Seeing Li Yan’s harmless and endearing demeanor, the Blood Shadow Eldest Daughter harbored no suspicion. Though he appeared dimwitted, Li Yan was merely imitating the behavior of a newly awakened Shadow Fiend. Such creatures were typically not very intelligent, and acting too shrewdly would have aroused the malevolent spirits’ suspicion.

A dark shadow slithered out from beneath the sedan chair. The Eldest Daughter’s shadow extended a hand and gently stroked Li Yan’s cheek.

“Handsome lad. And already at the sixth layer of the Blood Shifting Realm at such a young age… truly a rare find.”

“Excellent. You’re destined for greatness. From now on, stay by my side.”

“This lady hereby appoints you… Lantern Envoy.”

What?!

Li Yan had only intended to infiltrate this group of malevolent spirits, but they had taken a liking to him and even granted him a position!

The hierarchy among the Shadow Fiends was relatively straightforward: from the lowest tiers—Lantern Shadows, Lantern Bearers, and Lantern Keepers—one progressed to Lantern Envoy, followed by Elder Si Deng.

At such a young age, Li Yan had been directly promoted to Lantern Envoy, skipping three ranks entirely!

Even Moon Shadow Daoist was merely a Lantern Envoy, putting Li Yan on equal footing with him.

The nearby Elder Si Deng exclaimed in shock, “Eldest Daughter! This cannot be!”

“This child has barely been awake for two days. How can you appoint him as Lantern Envoy?”

The woman in the sedan chair smirked. “Elder Si Deng, do you question my judgment?”

“At his age, he already possesses a sixth-layer Blood Shifting Realm cultivation base. One day, he will become the Venerable One’s right-hand man, surpassing even your status.”

It was clear the Eldest Daughter genuinely valued talent. She believed Li Yan’s exceptional potential would lead him to greatness.

From within the sedan chair, she asked, “Do you object to being appointed Lantern Envoy?”

Li Yan continued to play the fool, feigning ignorance. “The Eldest Daughter has personally bestowed this honor. I dare not voice any objection.”

“Ha! This newly arrived Shadow Fiend may look dim-witted, but he’s sharper than he seems.”

“Now is the time for action. Work diligently, and the Venerable One won’t neglect capable Shadow Fiends.”

The Eldest Daughter in the sedan chair was thoroughly pleased.

She felt fortunate today. Just as she was about to embark on a long journey, she had acquired a promising new recruit.

This young Shadow Fiend must stay by her side and be carefully nurtured.

“By the way, what’s your name?”

“This humble servant is Li Feiyu, Miss.”

At that moment, Li Yan had a clever thought.

Having read countless novels, he naturally understood one thing:

Li Feiyu kills and burns, Venerable Han is revered by ten thousand.

A true Fellow Daoist should always conceal their dark deeds—that was basic decorum.

The Eldest Daughter in the sedan chair murmured, “Li Feiyu? Hmm, this Miss remembers.”

“When we reach Broken Sword Valley later, remember to stick close behind me. I’ll ensure your safety.”

The Eldest Daughter treated Li Yan like a newborn malevolent spirit, showering him with meticulous care and protection.

Such preferential treatment even made Elder Si Deng burn with jealousy.

“Boy! Hurry up and thank the Eldest Daughter!”

“Thank you, Eldest Daughter.”

Li Yan’s face remained impassive, but he chuckled inwardly. He could come and go from Broken Sword Valley as he pleased, needing no escort. He had already emptied most of the valley’s treasures, and the Blood Glazed Lotus Lamp was still in his possession. Those heading to Broken Sword Valley were likely to be disappointed.

Just then, Elder Si Deng raised his lantern. “Prepare the palanquin! To Broken Sword Valley!”

At the elder’s command, Li Yan felt a lightness beneath his feet as he was lifted into the air. He blended seamlessly into the group of Malevolent Shadow Fiends and soared toward Broken Sword Valley.

Moments later, the group landed outside the valley’s misty gate.

Seeing the gate still intact, Elder Si Deng sighed in relief. “Looks like we haven’t arrived too late.”

As he spoke, several figures emerged from the mist.

They were familiar faces: cultivators from Tranquil Void Temple! Martial Uncle Xuansha, Eldest Senior Brother Mingshan, and the others.

Clearly, they were still searching for treasures within Broken Sword Valley.

As they spotted Li Yan again, he secretly sighed inwardly, sensing trouble.

The Tranquil Void Temple cultivators also noticed him immediately.

Xuansha’s brow furrowed. “That brat? Dares to return?”

Eldest Senior Brother Mingshan and Second Senior Sister Mingyue, however, focused on the insignia on the palanquin.

“Is that the emblem of Mishan City?”

“How did Li Yan end up siding with Mishan City in just one day?”

“That kid… he’s got some tricks up his sleeve.”

The Eldest Senior Brother and Second Senior Sister whispered among themselves.

Martial Uncle Xuansha now realized that the group before him was from Mishan City.

One moment he had been glaring fiercely, the next he was bowing his head submissively.

“Xuansha, a disciple of Daoist Tranquil Void, greets you, honored elders!”

“May I ask what brings you here, honored elders?”

As he spoke, Xuansha kept glancing at Li Yan.

Inside the sedan chair, the Eldest Daughter inquired, “Why are they staring at you like that?”

The situation had become delicate.

One wrong word from Li Yan could plunge him into eternal damnation.

If he was recognized or let slip the truth, things would turn dire!

Faced with this predicament, Li Yan leaned toward the sedan chair window, his face cold, and pointed at Martial Uncle Xuansha.

“I remember when I first gained consciousness, this Daoist hunted me down, intending to refine my true form into alchemical pills.”

Though a lie, the sentiment rang true.

Yesterday, Martial Uncle Xuansha had indeed tried to take Li Yan’s life.

The Eldest Daughter in the sedan said indulgently, “Then kill them all and turn them into Shadow Puppets.”

No sooner had she spoken than countless shadowy ghost hands erupted from the depths beneath the sedan, surging forward to bind Xuansha.

Xuansha glanced down, his face turning ashen as he saw scores of black hands erupting from the shadows on the ground. “What kind of vile sorcery is this?”

“Aren’t you from Mishan City? How could you wield such… such depraved…”

Before Xuansha could finish, countless black hands clamped over his mouth.

Xuansha struggled soundlessly, paralyzed by fear.

He never imagined that a peak Blood Shifting Realm cultivator like himself could be instantly restrained and silenced.

Eldest Senior Brother Mingshan and Second Senior Sister Mingyue retreated in horror, only to find themselves completely surrounded by shadows.

“Our… our Grandmaster is Daoist Tranquil Void! Do you dare harm us? Aren’t you afraid of incurring his wrath?”

The Eldest Daughter of the Venerable One let out a low, mocking laugh from inside the sedan.

“Daoist Tranquil Void? What worthless trash.”

“Li Feiyu, they’re yours. Go turn them into Shadow Puppets.”

With that, the Eldest Daughter turned her gaze toward Li Yan.
