- Chapter 14 Part 2 - Exchange of Equal Value
Is all this trouble waiting here worth it just to get a talisman?
She had been cheated by the Buddhist sweeping monk, so she was only 50% confident with the rumors about the efficacy of Buddhism.
When Gulan’s grandmother fell ill, she should have gone to a doctor. Prince Bai’s farm had an available doctor who could treat servants. Relying on a monk’s talisman would probably lead to the same fate as her.
Third Young Master Bai shook his head, “Old Ah Ji is very old fashioned. Like many elders on the Qiuci grasslands, she only believes in witch doctors, not doctors.”
“Then where did the witch doctor go?”
“They were wiped out several years ago by the previous Grand Protector. That most deceptive witch doctor was burned to death by General Cui himself, who lit the torch. There were no unusual celestial phenomena when he was burned to death, completely contradicting what the witch doctor himself said.”
Jiarou was stunned. She had never expected to hear about her father on this subject.
“Ever since the witch doctors were removed, most people know that relying on shamanic rituals can’t drive away illnesses. But Old Ah Ji is particularly stubborn. Without a witch doctor, she relies on the gods, and doesn’t trust doctors at all.”
“But,” Jiarou said calmly, “I also know that General Cui has been dead in battle for five years. Don’t tell me the witch doctor hasn’t made a comeback?”
Third Young Master Bai suddenly raised his head and chest, his face full of pride. “Although General Cui of the Anxi Protectorate died in battle, allegedly, before his death he issued an order to the Beiting Protectorate, telling them to send troops to capture any witch doctors who resurface. Therefore, even if there are still witch doctors, they only dare to act covertly. Old Ah Ji’s tent is so close to the manor, the witch doctors will definitely not dare to come.”
“Really?” Jiarou was stunned.
According to Zhao Yong, when General Cui drove the Turks to the other side of Kunlun Mountain, the snow-capped mountain suddenly collapsed. How could someone have received his final words through the thick ice and snow?
Was witch doctors the only thing he said before he died?
Suddenly, a crowd surged around them. The people who had been kneeling, split into two along the tent door, leaving a path in the middle. Everyone stopped reciting scriptures and looked back.
Several soldiers in military uniforms, accompanied by two monks, approached at a brisk pace. The man in front was dressed as a general in black armor. He stood tall and straight, his expression unlike his usual aloofness. He appeared somewhat more approachable in front of the crowd.
There was a brief silence, and the young women who had been secretly looking at Jiarou all turned to look at Xue Lang.
Speaking of which, this year’s horse racing festival was also the first formal appearance of the newly appointed Grand Protector of Anxi. Though the people were silent and dared not speak, they were extremely curious about the new Protector-General.
Third Young Master Bai immediately called out excitedly, “General Xue, I’m the third young master!”
When Xue Lang heard the voice, he turned his head to look over, nodded slightly, and continued to move forward with the monk.
After Third Young Master Bai finished calling, he remembered the consensus he and the teacher had reached not long ago; which was for Xue Lang to “die young”.
He felt a little guilty for a moment, but Jiarou was reminded by this and offered him advice: “Yes, he just accepted a favor from Prince Bai for the military farm land, so he should give you some face. When he is near, tell him to take us into the tent.”
After speaking, she suddenly remembered Master Zhang who followed Xue Lang last time. She quickly turned back to check, and only when she saw that the man was not there did she feel relieved.
Third Young Master Bai looked at his teacher in surprise.
Who said, “If you see it, just pretend you didn’t see it“?
Who also said, “Let him die in our minds“?
Jiarou read his inner thoughts from his surprise. A flicker of embarrassment passed over her face before she confidently said, “Times change. Those who achieve great things don’t pay attention to trivial matters. What matters now is obtaining the talisman.”
The sun was so strong that she almost succumbed to the heat after only standing there for a while. The cloth wrapped around her chest was wound around twice, and now she was having trouble breathing. If she stood any longer, she would really faint.
“This, disciple has sworn in front of you, Master…..”
“Three coins, Master will raise the gambling limit to three coins.”
Third Young Master Bai had not expected such a pleasant surprise and he hurriedly put in more effort, saying, “But the Buddha said one must be trustworthy in words and deeds…..”
“Four coins!”
“Father also said…..”
“If you dare to bargain again, I will expel you from the sect and leave you penniless!”
“General Xue!” Third Young Master Bai immediately took action and grabbed Xue Lang, who happened to be passing him. “General Xue, Master and I are going to ask for a talisman, please take us in.”
Xue Lang paused; his deep eyes first glanced at Third Young Master Bai, then looked slightly to the side to finally fall on Jiarou’s face.
The sun was shining brightly in the sky, and she wore a crown of willow branches on her head. The willow leaves on top had long been wilted by the sun and sweat flowed down along her temples onto her sunburned face. She clearly looked like she was about to have a heatstroke, yet her collar was raised high, covering most of her neck, as if she was oblivious to the heat.
He didn’t say a word, just stared at her calmly.
After several breaths, she finally admitted defeat, “I’ll say, I know where Fifth Miss Cui is.”
Xue Lang withdrew his gaze and turned to leave.
Jiarou wiped the sweat from her forehead and hurriedly go with Third Young Master Bai.
