Chapter 61: Where the Soul Resides

To execute his plan to leave Vermilion Bird Star, Wang Lin’s True Body needed to remain in the Earth’s core of Zhao to continue cultivating the path of the Ancient God. His Clone would take Li Muwan to the Void Secret Realm. For this journey, he also needed to stabilize the Star Compass to ensure a foolproof departure from Vermilion Bird Star.

The Ancient God’s memories contained methods for repairing and reinforcing the Star Compass, but the required materials were rare and extremely expensive.

For the past ten years, he had lived in seclusion in the mortal world, rarely entering the World of Cultivation. This time, he would have to visit the black market again to see if he could find the necessary materials.

Seated in meditation in the courtyard, he put away the Star Compass, looked up at the vast, clear sky, and sighed heavily.

After setting aside his heavy thoughts, he put on a smile and turned to step into the bedroom. Hearing no sound from within and seeing the low couch empty, he called out, “Wan’er.”

There was no answer. He called again, “Where are you, Wan’er?”

Suddenly, a head peeked out from behind the screen. A pair of round, glistening eyes darted about before blinking at Wang Lin, as if asking what was the matter.

“Why are you standing here?” As Wang Lin approached, Li Muwan averted her gaze, her fingertips tracing the pattern on the screen, gesturing for Wang Lin to look as well.

“Wan’er is looking at the painting. Have you discovered something?”

She pointed to a white plum blossom tree on the screen, then pointed out the window, seemingly saying that the tree in the painting was the same as the one in the courtyard. She was beginning to observe her surroundings and perceive things, albeit faintly.

Wang Lin simply held her, continuing to look with her. Li Muwan leaned her body against his, relying on his strength, her weight pressing more and more into him until she had almost completely fallen into his embrace.

Perhaps growing bored again, her attention wandered. Her gaze began to search the room, finally landing on Wang Lin’s Adam’s apple. She touched it lightly with her fingertip, then touched her own neck, realizing it was different from his. She found it fascinating how it moved up and down as he swallowed.

Wang Lin studied her, unable to resist lifting her chin and kissing her. Feeling it wasn’t enough, he deepened the kiss, his tongue exploring. Li Muwan felt a comfortable and familiar warmth, and her limbs began to go soft.

But Wang Lin’s demands grew more intense, to the point where she couldn’t breathe. She frowned and pushed him away.

Her soft lips and small face were flushed red, and she gazed at him with innocent eyes.

Wang Lin’s fingertips rested on the side of her face, gently pinching her plump cheeks, which puffed out adorably. He smiled dotingly, “Why haven’t you learned to exchange breaths yet? My silly, adorable Wan’er.”

Seeing his gentle expression, Li Muwan thought he was just playing and giggled foolishly.

“I won’t tease you anymore. Let’s eat.”

After nightfall, Li Muwan was on the low couch again, holding a picture book. She would sit cross-legged for a while, then change positions when she got tired, tumbling into the bedding. When she was happy, she would kick her feet, causing her nightgown to slip down and reveal her fair calves.

Wang Lin brightened the lamps in the room a little more. Approaching quietly, he skillfully reached out and straightened the nightgown she had messed up.

“Don’t catch a cold, Wan’er.”

Hearing his voice, Li Muwan sat up and obediently burrowed into his arms, leaning against him as she continued to read.

Wang Lin turned the pages for her. After a while, she started to get sleepy. Once he had coaxed her to sleep and tidied the room, Wang Lin finally lay down to rest.

Pillowing his head on his arm, he watched the candle flame flicker. The sound of even breathing came from his chest. He stroked her dark hair and gently nuzzled her cheek. “Sleep, Wan’er. Tomorrow, we’ll leave this place for a while.”

“When you awaken, we will come back again.”

***

Morning light streamed through the window. The early mist in the courtyard had not yet completely dispersed. Li Muwan, who rarely woke up early, was swinging on the swing set, waiting for Wang Lin to make breakfast.

Suddenly, a black shadow landed in the courtyard, surrounded by a murderous aura. His gaze was sharp, his red hair dazzling, and his blood-red eyes were slightly narrowed. When his eyes fell upon the figure on the swing set, his expression softened.

The Clone, Wang Lin, sensed him and stood under the eaves. Their eyes met in silent understanding.

The True Body formed a seal and extracted two drops of Ancient God Blood from his heart. With his back turned, he said, “If the Law of the Realm in the Void Secret Realm proves irresistible, this Ancient God Blood can transform into the true body of an Ancient God to resist for a moment.”

“I must continue to sink into the earth and absorb the Star Vein. Only by raising my cultivation level will I have greater power to continue protecting Wan’er.”

The Clone, Wang Lin, accepted the Ancient God Blood, his gaze also falling upon the playful figure on the swing set. “I will bring Wan’er’s soul back.”

A butterfly landed on a vine. Li Muwan got off the swing and jumped, but couldn’t reach it. Dejected, she turned back around.

Suddenly, her view was blocked by a figure. When she looked up, the True Body brushed her hair, his fingertips gently weaving into the hair at the back of her head. The butterfly was already resting in his hand.

This was the first time she had seen the True Body, Wang Lin, since her body was reforged. The striking red that burst into her vision made her instinctively take half a step back, but the face was still the one she saw every day.

The look in his eyes as he gazed at her was also unchanged. She began to look around the courtyard, trying to find the Clone, Wang Lin. The Clone stood under the eaves, smiling warmly and nodding at her.

Li Muwan didn’t understand anything, but the aura of the person before her was the same as his. She didn’t know why there were two Wang Lins and stared at him in a daze.

The True Body gently drew her into his arms, his lips brushing against her fine hair, its fragrance filling his senses.

It seemed he had held her long enough, yet the affection in his eyes was hard to part with. He cupped Li Muwan’s delicate face, his eyes moist, crushing all his reluctance and pity into his gaze.

He bent down, his lips lightly touching her forehead. The soft touch on the spot between her brows was accompanied by a soft, husky whisper.

“Wan’er.”

Li Muwan looked up, and his lips landed on the tip of her nose. She raised a finger and traced the bridge of Wang Lin’s straight nose. The True Body leaned closer, pouring all his pent-up reluctance and love into this final kiss.

He kissed her very lightly, holding her lips between his, a gentle invasion. His lips and tongue entwined with hers, as if trying to sweep all his longing into her heart. She stood there obediently, just as she did when the Clone kissed her. She was starting to learn how to breathe, slowly accepting his presence. It was only when her upturned neck grew tired that she took half a step back.

The True Body pulled back, the tenderness in his eyes difficult to disperse. “Wan’er, I will find your soul and make you remember everything about us.”

Li Muwan grabbed his red hair, her attention already drifting away as the butterfly fluttered before her. Wang Lin performed a mystical technique, and the butterfly landed on the back of her hand. As she lowered her head to observe it, the True Body’s figure had already vanished from the courtyard.

The Clone stepped forward and wrapped an arm around Li Muwan’s waist. When she saw the white-haired Wang Lin, a flash of astonishment crossed her eyes before she leaned against him willingly.

“Come, Wan’er.”

The True Body’s aura was gone from the courtyard. He had sunk back into the earth to continue absorbing the Star Vein and raising his cultivation level.

Inside the main house, two figures knelt before the ancestral tablets. Wang Lin led Li Muwan in kowtowing three times.

He then placed a Restriction around the small courtyard. Li Muwan was now wearing a white cloak.

The wind picked up. Wang Lin put the hood up for her and tightened the drawstring. “Wan’er, we have to leave here for a while. We’ll come back later.”

Li Muwan didn’t understand. She thought Wang Lin was taking her to the market again and was quite happy.

But then she saw the mosquito beast circling overhead in the courtyard. Wang Lin directed it with his divine sense, and the two of them stood upon its back.

Li Muwan hugged his waist tightly as the mosquito beast flew towards the nearest teleportation array.

Wang Lin and Li Muwan spent three years traveling across Vermilion Bird Star. He exhausted all his efforts to gather the materials needed to reinforce the Star Compass. In a mountain cave in a Rank 4 cultivation country on Vermilion Bird Star, Li Muwan slept peacefully on a low couch, guarded by five Fiends.

For three consecutive months, Wang Lin had been reinforcing the Star Compass, and its completion was imminent.

He was completely focused on artifact refinement. During this time, if Li Muwan woke up, the Fiends would take turns entertaining her. Xu Liguo was responsible for going out to find mortal food.

She could eat by herself and didn’t need to be fed.

If she got bored and threw a tantrum, Xiao Ling would perform a bicycle kick for her, and the Great Ape’s fruit-tossing mystical technique could also coax a laugh out of her.

The Thunder Frog would spit out lightning bubbles for her. The exploding sparks were like fireworks. Xu Liguo had just returned with freshly bought meat buns when he saw Li Muwan about to touch one of the lightning bubbles. His heart leaped into his throat, and he nearly lost his soul.

“Mistress, you can’t play with this!” Xu Liguo urged her to stay away.

He then scolded the Thunder Frog, “The Mistress has the body of a mortal now. She can’t touch this thing of yours. Put it away quickly! If the Master finds out, we’re all dead.”

The Thunder Frog looked aggrieved. Li Muwan was clueless, yet she had a spark of cleverness. Her mischievous fingertip still poked the bubble.

Xu Liguo’s mouth fell open in shock, his jaw nearly dislocating. When he saw that she was unharmed after touching the lightning bubble, his suspended heart finally gave up. He collapsed to the ground, spread-eagled, scared half to death.

“Mistress, you’re going to scare little Xu to death!”

Li Muwan glanced at him, her gaze falling on Wang Lin’s back. He hadn’t come to speak with her for a long time. Li Muwan wanted to get closer to him, but the Fiends, under orders, had to stop and coax her.

She held the meat bun Xu Liguo had brought back, unwilling to eat it even when she was hungry, wanting to save it for Wang Lin.

No amount of coaxing from Xu Liguo worked. Finally, Wang Lin, who had been sitting with his eyes closed in meditation, opened them.

The reinforced compass landed back in his palm. After confirming it was done, he put it back in his Storage Bag and stood up, walking towards Li Muwan.

“Master, you’re finally out of seclusion!”

Wang Lin nodded and recalled the Fiends.

Li Muwan was already in his arms, holding the bun up before his eyes.

“I’ve made Wan’er wait for a long time.” Wang Lin picked her up and sat down on a rock, with Li Muwan naturally settling onto his lap. She then nudged the bun towards his lips.

Wang Lin took it and broke off a small piece, placing it in her mouth. “Wan’er, you eat. I’m not hungry.”

Being next to Wang Lin, she stopped fussing and obediently ate the bun, her dangling legs causing Wang Lin’s seated figure to sway along with them.

Seeing Li Muwan’s carefree appearance, a warmth bloomed in his heart.

“Thank you for your hardship, Wan’er, for enduring this vagrant life with me.”

He hadn’t been able to look after her these past few days, and her hair was a mess. A wooden comb suddenly appeared in Wang Lin’s hand. While Li Muwan ate peacefully, her dark hair slipped through his fingers. He cherished these small, mundane moments with her. After combing her long hair smooth, he tied it up into a bun again.

“The Star Compass is repaired. We can leave Vermilion Bird Star now.”

Li Muwan leaned on his shoulder. Though she didn’t understand, she loved listening to his voice, as if it was the only thing that gave her a sense of security.

With all preparations complete, Wang Lin activated the Star Compass.

A beam of light in the cave turned into a speck of a star. Myriads of miles away from Vermilion Bird Star, Wang Lin steered the Star Compass towards the peach blossom forest the old man had spoken of.

On the Star Compass, Li Muwan gazed at the stars that seemed within arm’s reach and the creatures she had never seen before. She was both curious and afraid, only daring to hide in Wang Lin’s arms, not leaving his side for a moment, yet unable to resist peeking out.

Occasionally, a Spirit Beast would swim past. She would cautiously reach out to touch it. After Wang Lin confirmed the creature was harmless to her, he would use a mystical technique to hold it still for her. Now that she had her own spirit pet to play with, she was a little more settled during the journey.

Wang Lin took out a few fruits he had prepared in advance from his Storage Bag to replenish her energy.

“Another hundred thousand li to the east and we should be there.” Wang Lin was filled with anticipation, but also feared the laws of the void. Over the years, he had thought of the most comprehensive methods to protect her from harm as much as possible.

A sea of pink entered his vision. The Star Compass stopped before a forest of peach blossoms.

“Is this the entrance the senior spoke of?”

The sight of the peach blossoms reminded Li Muwan of their small courtyard with the peach tree.

She reached out to catch a falling petal, but it vanished the moment it touched her palm.

Wang Lin watched the petal she had caught and mused, “So this is born from an illusion.”

“This is the place.”

He extended his Divine Sense into it. The void was deep and boundless. It looked calm, but the quieter it was, the more perilous it was likely to be.

He immediately made up his mind. He pulled Li Muwan into his arms, dressed her in the Black Tortoise Armor forged from top-grade spirit stones, and placed a hundred layers of protective Restrictions on himself. If the laws attacked, these Restrictions should be able to hold for a while.

“Master, why not put the Mistress in the Heaven Defying Pearl?”

“This void space is unstable. The space within the Heaven Defying Pearl might be affected by the void. Wan’er is only safest by my side.” Wang Lin made his final preparations, contemplated for a moment, and stepped into the void.

The Star Compass could not be used within the void, and with every step deeper, the power of the law intensified. Wang Lin felt the attacks of the law outside his Restrictions grow from shallow to deep.

The Restrictions that protected them along the way were under constant assault, and the Barrier they formed shattered continuously under the successive attacks.

The person in his arms was completely unaware, merely watching everything with a blank expression. Wang Lin could still resist these forces, but the deeper he went into the void, the more difficult his steps became.

Few of the Restrictions he had set up remained, and he had no way of knowing how much farther he had to go in this void.

Li Muwan had fallen asleep in his arms several times. Perhaps due to the influence of the void’s laws, she did not sleep well, her brows always furrowed in her dreams.

“Wan’er, just a little longer.”

A few days later, the attacks from the void’s laws intensified severalfold. The Restrictions Wang Lin had laid down were long since unable to withstand them.

“This law is even stronger than the black threads in the Realm of Desolation.”

As Wang Lin and Li Muwan entered the depths of the void, countless golden lights attacked Li Muwan with the force of a landslide. Wang Lin’s brows furrowed tightly, his terror mixed with a surge of rage.

“This time, no one will take her from me!” Following Wang Lin’s roar, his golden Nascent Soul appeared, forming a protective shield of light that enveloped Li Muwan.” Wang Lin himself used his physical body to block the descending pillars of light.

The pillars of light were temporarily blocked by his Divine Sense, but the attacks of the Law of the Realm left Wang Lin covered in wounds. Yet, he wouldn’t let even a single drop of blood touch Li Muwan.

No matter how strong his will or his Divine Sense, he could not withstand the continuous attacks of the law. This physical body was already on the verge of dissipating. His white robe was soaked in blood, and the Spiritual Power surrounding Li Muwan was gradually fading. Blood flowed onto her clothes.

Wang Lin’s face was contorted in agony, large beads of sweat dripped down, and blood seeped from the corners of his mouth and his eyes. The Divine Sense enveloping Li Muwan was also being overdrawn.

“Master, you’ll die from Nascent Soul dissipation at this rate!” Xu Liguo said worriedly. The Fiends in the Storage Bag were also restless.

“Even if I die, I will not let Wan’er be harmed in the slightest.”

The weak protective barrier was almost gone. Seeing that a pillar of law was about to strike Li Muwan, Wang Lin’s eyes filled with determination. He laughed madly as he took out a drop of the prepared Ancient God Blood from his heart. A dharma form resembling his True Body materialized to block the law’s attack.

“Law of the Realm, come at me!”

In an instant, his nearly dissipated Nascent Soul reconsolidated. Wang Lin seized the opportunity to speed through the void.

However, the true body condensed from the Ancient God Blood could only resist for a short time. It wasn’t enough. Wang Lin gritted his teeth and clenched his fists. He glanced at the person in his arms and made a decision.

“Master, you’re insane! You’re burning your Nascent Soul!”

He coughed up mouthful after mouthful of blood. Wang Lin’s eyes began to grow weak. The person in his arms, aside from her clothes being soaked in his blood, was completely unharmed.

Li Muwan stared at him blankly. Even seeing Wang Lin in this state, her gaze held no fear, only heartache.

She dazedly raised her hand to wipe the blood from Wang Lin’s mouth. If the law attacked one more time, his Nascent Soul would completely dissipate.

At this moment, he seemed to hear a chant from the distant void, a sound that could make one willingly immerse and lose oneself in it. He couldn’t discern its source or direction.

His gaze remained fixed on Li Muwan, just staring into her eyes.

Just as the pillar of the Law of the Realm was about to land on Wang Lin, a wisp of purple light drifted from between Li Muwan’s eyebrows. The seven corporeal souls within her body condensed into a massive force, blocking the descending pillar of law.

It was the instinct of her soul, protecting Wang Lin.

Tears streamed down the naive Li Muwan’s face, dripping onto Wang Lin’s collar.

In the final moment, his nearly dissipated body felt her warmth. His powerful will reconsolidated his physical form once more. Meanwhile, at the bottom of a mountain range beneath the country of Zhao.

The True Body’s eyes revealed an icy and ruthless glint. Because the Clone was burning its Nascent Soul, which affected the True Body’s own, the power within his body was drained in an instant.

A low roar echoed through the underground. “Wan’er!”

His red hair spread out wildly in all directions. The True Body once again felt the return of his Nascent Soul and the dissipation of the seven corporeal souls that had gathered in Li Muwan. The True Body’s Ancient God Art frantically absorbed the life force from the Star Vein to replenish itself.

“No, Wan’er!”

The barrier formed by Li Muwan’s seven corporeal souls blocked that wave of attacks for Wang Lin, but the seven souls that had been so difficult to regather were now being consumed.

“Wan’er, no, you can’t!” Wang Lin screamed himself hoarse.

But the person in his arms couldn’t understand. She only looked at Wang Lin in pain. It was an instinct from within her body, not something she could control.

“I don’t want you to protect me.” Tears streamed down Wang Lin’s face, his voice already gone.

If that Jade Slip hadn’t damaged her foundation, even with the influence of her Soul of Life, it wouldn’t have been entirely impossible for her to achieve Nascent Soul Formation. If her foundation were intact, Wang Lin could have used his cultivation level to help her, and they would have had a long time together to solve the issue of her Soul of Life.

But by the time he found out, it was too late. Too late.

He was almost begging. The person in his arms cupped his blood-streaked face.

“I don’t want you to protect me…”

“Wan’er…”

Wang Lin laughed madly.

“All I, Wang Lin, have ever wanted in this life is to live peacefully with the one I love. Is that wrong?”

His hysterical voice brought forth Li Muwan’s tears as well. She gently wiped his tears away, a gentle smile on her face.

At this moment, faced with an unacceptable outcome, Wang Lin broke through his comprehension of the Life and Death Conception, reaching perfection. The Life and Death Artistic Conception Scroll fully unfurled, protecting Li Muwan’s physical body within it. Wang Lin drove his Divine Sense, and his Nascent Soul, which was about to scatter, reconsolidated once more as he charged towards the end of the void at high speed.

Half a month later.

Water gurgled, and fallen flowers drifted with the stream.

The Secret Realm beyond the void was like a paradise on earth.

Wang Lin opened his eyes in a daze. His first reaction upon regaining consciousness was to search for Li Muwan.

She wasn’t in his arms, nor was she beside him.

He shouted into the emptiness, “Wan’er!”

“It can’t be, Wan’er can’t have dissipated…”

His silver hair fell loose, draping over his chest. Helplessness and fear struck him down. Wang Lin used his Divine Sense to feel for her presence, but felt another force obstructing him, a force whose source he could not trace.

Just as he was on the verge of breaking down, a leisurely voice came from above.

“Little friend.”

“Who is it?”

“Did you not come here to find me?” A white-haired old woman, her voice carrying the vicissitudes of time but her face showing no signs of age, appeared with two immortal attendants by her side.

Wang Lin was wary. He stared at her and said, “Senior is the guardian of this place?”

“Have you seen my wife?”

Wang Lin’s head was bowed, the pain in his eyes hard to quell.

The guardian waved her hand, and a screen of light appeared before them. In the reflection, Wang Lin saw Li Muwan’s physical body being nurtured in a warm pool.

Wang Lin took a step forward, unable to hide his urgency. “Wan’er?”

“You need not worry. The void has its laws that affect mortals, but this Secret Realm does not.”

“I implore Senior to let me see her.”

The guardian shook her head. With a light wave of her gauze sleeve, the two of them appeared by a warm pool on a cliff. Nourishing Spiritual Power continuously flowed into her body.

“Senior, Wan’er, she…”

“You burned your Nascent Soul in the void just to bring her here?”

“And for your sake, she was willing to let her newly re-formed seven corporeal souls dissipate, just so the law would not harm you.”

“How is Wan’er?” Wang Lin’s face was filled with unbearable pain. Even without consciousness, her soul’s instinct was to protect him completely.

“She has fallen into a deep sleep. She needs to recuperate here for forty-nine days before she can awaken for a short time.”

Wang Lin was filled with extreme regret. His fingernails dug into his palms, and fresh blood dripped into the warm pool.

His white robe soaked in the pool’s water as he carefully and heedlessly pulled her into his embrace. This panic of losing and regaining her was something he never wanted to experience again.

“Wan’er, I won’t let you leave again. I promise.”

The guardian watched this scene quietly. “Why risk the laws of the void to come here?”

“With Senior’s mystical powers, you can naturally see the three souls missing from my wife’s body. I was guided by someone who told me that this place holds a Mystical Power that can divine the location of a person’s missing souls.”

“To divine the location of the souls, you must pay an equivalent price. Otherwise, even if I wished to help you, I could not truly locate where the souls are.”

“Any price is worth it,” Wang Lin said without hesitation.

The guardian’s Divine Sense swept over his body, and she looked as if she wanted to say something but stopped.

“Senior, please speak freely.”

Wang Lin’s fingertips caressed the eyebrows of the sleeping woman.

“The Soul Retrieval Art can be cast using your life force, but the amount of Spiritual Power it consumes is immense. With your cultivation level, you cannot withstand it.”

“It doesn’t matter. I ask Senior to cast the art.”

After receiving Wang Lin’s resolute confirmation, the guardian activated the Soul Retrieval Art. The formation continuously absorbed the life force from Wang Lin’s body. His face instantly became devoid of all color. He had already depleted his Nascent Soul in the void, and now he had to endure having his life force drained by the Soul Retrieval Art.

Relying on his powerful will, he endured the exhaustion of his life force required by the art.

After several days of soul retrieval, the guardian finally locked onto a location.

Wang Lin opened his eyes. Within the formation, on a distant planet, inside an azure, glowing, spherical star, he saw a wisp of Li Muwan’s remnant soul.

He trembled violently. “Wan’er’s soul is there!”

“This place is called Azure Star, merely an ordinary celestial body in the universe with no cultivators present.”

Having exhausted too much vitality, Wang Lin was now extremely weak. After locking onto the soul realm, he immediately began meditating to recover.

“Senior, how can I retrieve Wan’er’s soul?”

“A wisp of remnant soul will live out her lifetime there. After her death, this soul will drift elsewhere, continuing to form new lives in an endless cycle.”

Wang Lin pondered: “Wan’er’s remnant soul will continuously generate new lives, completing lifetime after lifetime.”

Then wouldn’t this be no different from her entering the cycle of reincarnation?

“If you’re willing to use your heart’s blood as a guide to enter the soul realm, voluntarily erase your memories and past attachments, and achieve enlightenment with the incarnation of her remnant soul, you can bring back this wisp of soul.”

“What if we fail to achieve enlightenment?”

“Her remnant soul will drift to any random place, starting another life in an endless cycle. But if you wish to continue searching for this wisp of soul, you’ll need to use your vitality again to locate its whereabouts.”

“…”

“If I go to Azure Star,” Wang Lin looked at Li Muwan in his arms, “can Wan’er’s physical body come along?”

The guardian shook his head.

“Wan’er cannot be separated from me,” Wang Lin’s eyes showed reluctance as he stroked Li Muwan’s pale cheek. “The reason I risked death to bring her across the void was because I couldn’t bear to leave her alone on Vermilion Bird Star. Similarly, I won’t leave her alone in the secret realm either.”

After speaking, Wang Lin extracted a drop of heart’s blood, letting it slowly fall between Li Muwan’s eyebrows. As the blood merged, lotus-shaped patterns faintly appeared on Li Muwan’s forehead and over Wang Lin’s left chest.

Immediately after, he took out Ancient God Blood, condensed a clone, infused it with divine sense, and sent both the clone and divine sense through the spacetime channel leading to Azure Star.

“With my clone infused with divine sense, you are me and I am you. Bringing back Wan’er’s remnant soul is your sole mission.”

Spacetime traversal.
