- Chapter 72 - Coaxing
Pei Song let out a sleepy murmur and quickly drifted off to sleep. Shi Yancheng lowered his head, gazing at his sleeping face with such tender affection it seemed about to melt.
Pei Song’s eyelashes were long, casting a faint shadow under the elevator’s lights. His black hair fell softly over his forehead, and even in sleep, his brows remained slightly furrowed, as if he couldn’t fully let go of work, even in light slumber.
His lips were pale and gently pressed together, carrying a hint of stubbornness. Even now, he unconsciously held onto that trait. The sharp, polished image of an elite professional was nowhere to be seen. In its place was a kind of innocent purity.
His breathing was light, and his exhausted body naturally leaned toward Shi Yancheng. From time to time, he would subconsciously shift, as if trying to find a more comfortable spot.
This person, who usually kept others at arm’s length, had let down all his guards in exhaustion.
“What a troublesome guy,” Shi Yancheng whispered, though his tone was filled with indulgent fondness.
The elevator continued its slow descent, as if time itself had eased its pace. When they reached the parking garage, Shi Yancheng opened the passenger side door and carefully settled the half-asleep Pei Song into the seat.
“Get some rest. I’ll wake you when we get there,” he said softly, fastening the seat belt and adjusting the air conditioning a little warmer.
Pei Song murmured an absentminded response, curling into the seat, and soon fell completely asleep.
It was unclear how much time passed before the car finally came to a stop. The sudden stillness woke Pei Song. As he opened his eyes, the familiar sight of the hotel lobby came into view.
Memories of that night came rushing back, making his entire body tense. “No, I want to go home…”
“I can’t let you leave like this,” Shi Yancheng said calmly. “This place is close to the office. It’ll be easier for you tomorrow morning.”
“I don’t want to stay here,” Pei Song’s voice was soft, but laced with stubbornness.
Every time he thought of that out-of-control night, of his drunken abandon, he was overwhelmed with shame.
Shi Yancheng noticed his resistance, his tone unconsciously gentling. “You’ll stay in your usual room. I promise I won’t bother you.”
Pei Song pressed his lips together, silent.
“Or do you want me to take you home instead?” Shi Yancheng didn’t push further, even stepping back a little.
Seeing the unhidden concern in his eyes, Pei Song finally relented. “…I have to get up early tomorrow.”
That was as good as agreeing.
The elevator stopped on the 42nd floor, and Shi Yancheng swiped his card to open the door. The familiar layout of the suite made Pei Song feel dazed, the sofa, coffee table, floor lamp… everything was just like before.
Even the pair of slippers he always used was still neatly placed by the doorway.
“Go rest,” Shi Yancheng said, standing at the guest room door, making no move to enter. “Call me if you need anything.”
Pei Song quickly walked into the bedroom and only let out a breath of relief when he heard the door quietly close behind him. After washing up, he lay in bed, forcing himself not to think about that night.
The soreness all over his body reminded him how long he’d been working without rest. His eyelids grew heavier. By the time he woke up the next morning, Shi Yancheng had already left.
On the bedside table, a glass of warm water and a set of clean clothes had been neatly placed.
Breakfast was still warm on the table, century egg and lean pork congee, steamed soup dumplings, salted duck egg, all his favorites.
His phone buzzed with a message from Shi Yancheng, “Eat breakfast before heading to work.”
Pei Song looked at the thoughtful arrangements, pressing his lips together.
This man always managed to strike the perfect balance between assertiveness and tenderness making it hard to get too close, yet impossible to push away.
As Pei Song finished getting ready to leave, another message arrived, “Don’t stress about the project. If anything happens, I’ll take responsibility.”
Standing before the mirror, adjusting his tie, Pei Song tried to ignore the strange emotion stirring in his heart.
While Pei Song was leading his team to handle system vulnerabilities, a much bigger crisis was quietly approaching.
“Manager Pei, something serious happened.” The technical director pushed the door open, his expression grave. “Renhe Hospital just notified us they want to terminate the partnership.”
Pei Song grabbed the document, his brows tightly knit. “Why are they suddenly pulling out?”
“They mentioned risk concerns,” the director said miserably, “But didn’t give a specific reason.”
Before Pei Song could process the news, worse news arrived the next day. The rehabilitation center associated with the project also sent a letter, saying they wanted to reevaluate the feasibility of continuing cooperation.
By the third day, the last medical institution had formally announced its intention to terminate their agreement.
“Something’s not right.” Pei Song sat in his office, carefully reviewing the letters from the three institutions. “The wording is almost identical. It’s like they coordinated this.”
Without the support of medical partners, Senior Living Haven’s biggest advantage would vanish. For the entire project, it was like pulling the rug out from under their feet.
At the Friday meeting, Pei Song truthfully reported the current crisis.
“Three major partners requesting to terminate cooperation in succession will have a huge impact on the project,” he said, meeting Shi Yancheng’s gaze, his voice steady. “But we’ve already launched emergency measures. On one hand, we’re maintaining communication with our existing partners. On the other hand, we’ve started reaching out to new medical resources.”
After the meeting, Pei Song immediately organized his team for a risk assessment.
On the whiteboard, he quickly listed three key issues, medical resource replacements, system security vulnerabilities, and the project delivery timeline.
“We’ve got two weeks to deliver the first phase,” he told the team. “We need to push the schedule forward while guaranteeing quality. System testing must be comprehensive. Not a single vulnerability gets through.”
At 1 AM, the conference room at the demonstration unit was still brightly lit.
Pei Song was on a video call with the tech team in Singapore, focused on a suspicious system flaw. “The logic here’s flawed,” he said, pointing at the screen. “If data concurrency peaks, it could cause a total failure of the monitoring system.”
Suddenly, his phone rang, it was Li Ming. “M-Manager Pei…”
On the other end, Li Ming’s breathless, panicked voice came through. “I’m at Central Plaza, B2 parking lot. I… I think someone’s following me…”
“What happened?” Pei Song immediately sat upright.
“I… I just got some key documents from Lawyer Zhang,” Li Ming’s voice was barely a whisper, clearly fighting to suppress fear. “It’s records of financial transactions between Zhilin Tech and those three medical institutions… but I realized someone’s been tailing me…”
Pei Song stood up instantly. “Where exactly are you right now?”
“Near the B2 elevator entrance. I’m hiding behind a business van. They…” Li Ming’s voice suddenly cut off, followed by the sound of hurried, muffled footsteps.
“Oh God… Liu Yan and the others are here…” A burst of panicked breathing came through, followed by the dull clank of metal, and a stifled cry of pain.
The call was cut off. Pei Song immediately called Shi Yancheng. “Li Ming’s in danger, he just said he’s at Central Plaza B2…”
“I’ll have Security dispatched immediately,” Shi Yancheng cut him off, his voice low and steady. “Don’t act on your own. Stay put and wait for news.”
“No, he has vital evidence,” Pei Song said, already striding toward the door. “I have to check on him.”
“You stop right there!” Shi Yancheng’s voice turned sharp. “The Risk Control and Legal teams are on their way. Leave it to them.”
