- Chapter 58 - Shut Up!
At 7 a.m. the next morning, Pei Song was in the kitchen preparing breakfast when Su Mi, already dressed, came downstairs.
“Why are you up so early?” Pei Song asked, holding a plate of freshly fried bacon.
“Of course, I’m taking you to work,” Su Mi said as she sat at the dining table. “I don’t have any plans today anyway, so I might as well drop you off.”
Pei Song responded with a simple hum before heading into the walk-in closet. His hand hovered over the clothing rack for a moment before finally taking out a garment bag, neatly folding some clothes inside.
“Huh? Why are you bringing that to work?” Su Mi noticed the garment bag in his hand.
“Ah… just some clothes.” Pei Song adjusted his tie, avoiding Su Mi’s inquisitive gaze.
At the entrance of SNK, Su Mi bid Pei Song farewell. As soon as Pei Song stepped into his office, Zhou Feng knocked and entered.
“Pei Song, there’s an elderly care project in Singapore next Wednesday. You and I will be going for an inspection,” Zhou Feng informed him. “It’ll be about three days.”
“Got it.” Pei Song nodded. “I’ll prepare the visa documents as soon as possible.”
During lunch break, Pei Song carried the garment bag to the president’s office. Jin Shuning was sorting documents in the outer office.
“Secretary Jin, could you help me pass this to Mr. Shi?” Pei Song asked, looking slightly uneasy.
Jin Shuning glanced at the garment bag, then at the tightly closed office door. “Sorry, Manager Pei, personal belongings like this should be handed over by you personally.” He had no interest in getting involved in their affairs.
“It’s just some clothes…”
“All the more reason for you to give them to him yourself.” Jin Shuning smirked.
“Forget it then.” Pei Song turned to leave.
“Wait, Manager Pei!”
Jin Shuning quickly stepped into the office and returned shortly. “Mr. Shi wants to see you.”
Pei Song walked into the office and saw Shi Yancheng sitting on the sofa.
“Returning my clothes?” Shi Yancheng stood up and took the garment bag from Pei Song’s hand. “I heard you’re going to Singapore with Zhou Feng?”
Pei Song gave a neutral hum. “It’s for a company project. Is there a problem?”
“No.” Shi Yancheng placed the garment bag on the sofa and casually remarked, “Zhou Feng seems to value you quite a bit.”
Pei Song frowned slightly. “Mr. Shi, if you have something to say, just say it.”
Shi Yancheng walked to his desk and leisurely poured himself a glass of water. “I just think it’s interesting that Zhou Feng specifically chose you. Maybe he wants to use this business trip as an opportunity to catch up?”
Pei Song paused before realizing what he meant. His expression darkened. “Mr. Shi, please don’t mix work with personal matters.”
“I’m just concerned about the project,” Shi Yancheng said as he took a step closer. “After all, this inspection is important.”
“Mr. Shi.” Pei Song met his gaze. “I hope that during this trip, you won’t interfere like you did with the executive training in D Country…”
“What about it?”
“I’m an SNK employee now. I’ll do my job well, and I’d appreciate it if you didn’t meddle too much.”
“Did I interfere with the D Country training?” Shi Yancheng raised an eyebrow.
“That project got mysteriously postponed… It might even get canceled.” Pei Song watched his composed expression. “Was that really just a coincidence?”
“You really wanted to attend that training?” Shi Yancheng’s voice softened.
Pei Song pressed his lips together. “It’s not about wanting to go or not.”
“You’re outstanding. There will be plenty of opportunities in the future. When the time comes, I’ll take you myself,” Shi Yancheng said casually.
Pei Song’s heart skipped a beat. For a moment, he was at a loss for words. Seeing his stubborn expression, Shi Yancheng didn’t push further.
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll get back to work.” Pei Song turned to leave, feeling slightly frustrated.
But just as he moved, Shi Yancheng blocked his way with an outstretched arm. “Since you returned my clothes, I should return one to you too. After all, your shirt… I tore it.”
“Shut up!” Pei Song panicked and slapped a hand over Shi Yancheng’s mouth, his face turning crimson. But he quickly realized how intimate that action was and pulled his hand away as if electrocuted, taking a step back awkwardly.
“What?” Shi Yancheng smirked. “Don’t want people to know?”
“Mr. Shi!” Pei Song gritted his teeth, his voice low. “Please mind the occasion.”
Shi Yancheng leaned in slightly. “It’s just the two of us here.”
“I’m leaving!” Pei Song bolted out of the office. Practically fleeing, he didn’t even acknowledge Jin Shuning’s curious gaze.
It wasn’t until he returned to his own office that he realized his heart was pounding uncontrollably. How could this man be so shameless… So audacious to bring up that incident?!
Ever since her son’s divorce, Grandma Pei had been asking around about Zhang Yumei.
She never liked the arrogant Zhang Yumei, thinking she’d be a difficult daughter-in-law to control. That’s why she had forced her eldest son to break up with her.
If her eldest son had married Zhang Yumei back then, the Pei family would be in a much better position now.
More importantly, she had another motive. Her useless younger son had been imprisoned for business fraud. Zhang Yumei’s father was a high-ranking official, he could help pull some strings.
She found out that Zhang Yumei now lived in Jinxiu Huating in the eastern part of the city and had repeatedly sent invitation letters. Unfortunately, every single one was returned.
That afternoon, she sat in Mingxiang Teahouse, drumming her fingers impatiently on the table. She had once again invited Zhang Yumei to meet, hoping to speak in person, but as before, Zhang Yumei didn’t show up.
Instead, a young woman stepped through the door, her features carrying a resemblance to a younger Zhang Yumei.
“Grandma Pei.” The girl addressed her in a calm tone. “I’m Zhang Yumei’s daughter, Zhang Ruojin. My mother isn’t feeling well, so she sent me in her place.”
Grandma Pei studied the girl. Zhang Ruojin was composed, well-spoken, and exuded a natural confidence, much like Zhang Yumei in her youth.
“How old are you?” Grandma Pei probed.
“Twenty-four,” Zhang Ruojin replied. “I just returned from studying in Y Country.”
Grandma Pei’s heart stirred. That was just around Pei Song’s age.
The entire afternoon, she observed Zhang Ruojin in silence. The girl was indeed remarkable, graceful like a noble lady yet sharp-minded like a well-educated overseas graduate.
Most importantly, she radiated an unshakable self-assurance.
As she was about to leave, Zhang Ruojin took the initiative. “Grandma Pei, I heard you love gardening. If you don’t mind, I’d love to learn from you sometime.”
Grandma Pei beamed. “Of course, of course! You’re welcome anytime.”
