The living room was dimly lit by a single floor lamp. Shi Yancheng sat on the sofa, reading through documents, his expression cold and stern.

“Have you eaten?” He asked without looking up, his tone flat and emotionless.

“I have.” Pei Song instinctively lied. In reality, he hadn’t had much of an appetite all day, barely touching his lunch.

Shi Yancheng glanced at him, his gaze lingering on Pei Song’s dry lips for a second before returning to his documents without another word.

Back in his room, Pei Song leaned against the door and took a deep breath.

The suffocating atmosphere was unbearable. Even when they disagreed in the past, things had never been this bad. Shi Yancheng had always tolerated his temper, indulging him no matter what.

But this time, it was different. Shi Yancheng was truly angry.

At 2 a.m., Pei Song was still wide awake.

His stomach growled, betraying him. Quietly, he tiptoed into the kitchen, hoping to find something to eat.

Inside the fridge, a plate of pasta sat neatly covered with plastic wrap.

Pei Song recognized it instantly, it was the signature dish from Shi Yancheng’s favorite restaurant. After hesitating for a moment, he took it out and warmed it up. Just as he stuck his fork into the pasta, footsteps sounded behind him.

Shi Yancheng leaned against the kitchen doorway, his expression unreadable.

“I… was just a little hungry,” Pei Song muttered awkwardly.

Without a word, Shi Yancheng walked over to the cupboard and took out a jar of honey.

“Drink some warm honey water first. Eating on an empty stomach for too long isn’t good.”

His voice remained cold, but his actions carried the same quiet care as always. Watching him prepare the honey water so effortlessly, Pei Song felt a sting in his chest.

For the next few days, they maintained this distant, lukewarm relationship.

When they saw each other, they exchanged nothing more than a simple greeting. Shi Yancheng was gone all day, returning to the hotel only to shut himself in his room early at night.

The only sign of his presence was the food that was always restocked in the fridge.

The meal boxes always contained Pei Song’s favorite dishes. The thermos bottle always held the coffee he liked.

But this silent care only made Pei Song feel worse. He would have preferred Shi Yancheng to lose his temper again instead of this distant, indifferent treatment.

On Friday night, after working late, Pei Song returned to find the suite in complete darkness.

A note was left on the coffee table, Gone to B City for two days. There’s food in the fridge.

A simple sentence, devoid of warmth, even the punctuation felt distant. A wave of emptiness washed over Pei Song. For the first time, he felt like he was truly losing Shi Yancheng.

Not because of the training program in Country D. Not because Shi Yancheng was returning there. But because of the crack that had suddenly appeared between them.

For the entire weekend, Pei Song locked himself in his room.

He kept the heavy curtains tightly shut, as if that could somehow keep his emotions hidden too. He pulled out an old report, trying to focus on work, but his mind kept drifting back to Shi Yancheng.

The way he sometimes smiled. The way he looked when teaching him to code. The way he always reminded him to eat, even in the middle of the night…

Each time he made coffee, he unconsciously took out an extra cup. Every time he opened the fridge and saw the prepared meals, he quietly closed it again.

At night, even the sound of the air conditioning seemed unbearably loud. The entire suite felt frozen in time, as if everything had been put on pause.

In the silence, emotions that had been suppressed for days began to grow heavier and heavier.

Until Sunday night, when Shi Yancheng finally returned. He looked exhausted, his suit jacket draped over his arm, tie loosened.

“Was the trip successful?” Pei Song asked cautiously.

Shi Yancheng hummed in acknowledgment and walked straight to his room. The door closed softly, but to Pei Song, it felt like a hammer striking his heart.

Monday morning, in the conference room, Zhou Feng was assigning tasks.

“For the Starlight Plaza project, we need to report to the executives next week. Pei Song, how’s the material preparation going?”

“Almost done,” Pei Song replied, flipping through his notebook. “Just need to update a few data points.”

“Good. Keep an eye on it this week,” Zhou Feng said, then paused, giving Pei Song a meaningful look.

“If you need anything, come find me anytime.”

Pei Song knew Zhou Feng wasn’t just talking about work. Ever since he agreed to the training program in Country D, Zhou Feng had been paying more attention to him.

But at the moment, Pei Song had no energy to think about that.

For days, his mind had been distracted. Every morning before leaving, he walked slower, hoping to catch a glimpse of Shi Yancheng.

But every time, the suite remained silent. It was as if Shi Yancheng was deliberately avoiding him.

The next day, Zhou Feng stopped him in the hallway.

“Is your visa application ready? I’ll have my secretary send it in for you.”

“Thank you, Mr. Zhou,” Pei Song forced a smile. “I’ll finish sorting it out today.”

Back at his desk, a new document sat on top of his papers. It was the training manual from Country D, detailing the course schedule.

As he flipped through it, he noticed that the program was based in City C, at SNK’s headquarters.

That was halfway across the country from City M, where he and Shi Yancheng had once lived. Even if he went to Country D, he probably wouldn’t see him at all. The realization left him feeling even more frustrated.

After work, Zhou Feng invited him for drinks.

“You don’t look too good. Want to grab a drink?”

Pei Song shook his head. “No, I’ve still got some work to finish.”

When he opened the door to their suite, Shi Yancheng was on the balcony, talking on the phone.

Hearing the sound, he turned his head slightly, his gaze resting on Pei Song for a few seconds before indifferently looking away.

Pei Song wanted to ask why he was acting like this. But in the end, the words got stuck in his throat.

Maybe… this was the best way for them to coexist.

Feeling unsettled, he went to his room and spent the night sorting out his visa documents.

It took longer than expected, his passport and forms were neatly stacked in a folder.

As he double-checked the embassy’s document checklist, he didn’t notice when Shi Yancheng walked in.

A form slipped out of the folder and landed at Shi Yancheng’s feet. He stared at the visa application form, his gaze slowly turning cold. Bending down, he picked it up, his movements slow, as if restraining something.

“So, you’ve made up your mind?” His voice was icy.

Pei Song’s heart skipped a beat. “Yes, Mr. Zhou already scheduled the submission.”

Shi Yancheng slammed the form onto the coffee table.

“So, nothing I say matters? As long as Zhou Feng arranges it, you’ll go?”

“What exactly are you angry about?” Pei Song snapped. “It’s just a training program.”

“Just a program?” Shi Yancheng scoffed. “Throwing away all your current projects just to go to Country D?”

“I’m not leaving forever! And this is important for my career!”

“Important enough to ignore my opinion completely?” His voice grew sharper.

Pei Song suddenly felt exhausted. “Why do you always have to dismiss my choices? I can make my own decisions, I don’t need to listen to you about everything.”

“Wow. You’ve finally learned to be independent.” Shi Yancheng laughed coldly.

“Fine. Go ahead. Chase after your ‘career development.’”
