- Come on, What Kind of CEO Chases His Roommate Back to the Country?
- Chapter 50 - Argument
The next day, a rumor spread throughout the company, SNK was about to welcome a new President for the Asia-Pacific region. Every department was speculating about what changes this mysterious new president would bring.
But Pei Song had no time to care about any of that. Last night’s argument with Shi Yancheng and Zhou Feng’s invitation had left him feeling unsettled.
Even work couldn’t keep his mind off things, his thoughts kept drifting, and Shi Yancheng’s cold gaze kept flashing before his eyes.
As he was leaving work, Zhou Feng called out to him. “Let’s grab a drink and talk about the training.”
Pei Song initially wanted to decline, but seeing his empty chat window on his phone, he felt a pang of disappointment. Maybe going out for a bit was better than overthinking alone in his room.
“Alright,” he nodded.
The bar was dimly lit, with soft jazz playing in the background.
Zhou Feng ordered two vodka lemon cocktails. The transparent liquid, tinged with golden lemon juice, swirled in the glass. Ice cubes clinked gently, reflecting the bar’s lights.
“Pei Song, I see great potential in you. This trip to Country D isn’t just about training, it’s a rare career opportunity.” Zhou Feng’s voice was warm.
Pei Song took a sip, feeling even more irritated at the thought that Shi Yancheng would be heading back to Country D next Friday.
The fresh citrus scent mixed with the bitter sting of alcohol, but it couldn’t suppress the emotions churning inside him.
“What are you hesitating about?” Zhou Feng poured him another drink. “If you have any concerns, we can discuss them.”
“The project isn’t fully wrapped up yet…”
“No need to worry about that,” Zhou Feng smiled. “I’ll take care of everything. What’s important is your future.”
Maybe it was the alcohol, or maybe it was the reluctance he felt about Shi Yancheng leaving, but in the end, Pei Song nodded. “Alright, I’ll go.”
When they left the bar, Zhou Feng insisted on driving him back to his hotel.
“There’s no need. I can just get a cab,” Pei Song declined.
“It’s late. It’s safer if I take you.” Zhou Feng was persistent.
As they arrived at the hotel entrance, Pei Song was about to step out of the car when he looked up, Shi Yancheng was standing outside the lobby.
Their gazes met in midair, and the atmosphere instantly became tense.
Shi Yancheng’s eyes lingered on Zhou Feng’s car for a few seconds, his expression growing darker.
“Pei Song, you’re back late,” his voice was even colder than usual.
Zhou Feng rolled down the window. “Mr. Shi, nice to meet you. I’m Zhou Feng from SNK.”
Shi Yancheng nodded but didn’t say a single word.
After Zhou Feng drove away, Shi Yancheng turned and walked straight to the elevator.
Pei Song followed behind, sensing the oppressive aura radiating from him.
As soon as they entered the suite, Shi Yancheng spoke. “Had a good chat with Zhou Feng?”
“We just talked about the training,” Pei Song tried to explain. “I agreed to go to Country D.”
“So, just because I told you not to go, you insisted on going?” Shi Yancheng’s voice was ice-cold.
“Why are you so against this?” Pei Song was getting frustrated. “This is a great opportunity.”
“A great opportunity?” Shi Yancheng sneered. “Are you sure Zhou Feng doesn’t have other motives?”
“What do you mean?”
“His attention towards you has already gone beyond a normal superior-subordinate relationship.” Shi Yancheng took a step closer. “Can’t you see his intentions?”
Pei Song bit his lip. “Don’t be ridiculous. Boss Zhou and I are just colleagues.”
“Really?” Shi Yancheng’s gaze turned even colder. “Then why didn’t you tell me you used to like him?”
Pei Song’s body stiffened, embarrassed. “How do you know that…?”
“So it’s true.” There was an unreadable emotion in Shi Yancheng’s voice. “No wonder you listen to him so much.”
“That was years ago.” Pei Song explained, “I was young and impulsively confessed after graduation. He rejected me. Now, we’re just ordinary coworkers.”
“Ordinary coworkers?” Shi Yancheng pressed him further. “Do ‘ordinary coworkers’ ask you out for drinks late at night? Do they insist on driving you home?”
“What exactly are you trying to say?” Pei Song was starting to get angry at his aggressive attitude. “Do I need your permission for my decisions now?”
“You’re so eager to go to Country D,” Shi Yancheng grabbed his wrist, his grip so strong it hurt. “Are you so blinded by him that you’ve lost all judgment?”
“Let me go!” Pei Song struggled. “Why do you even care? Aren’t you going back to Country D too?”
Shi Yancheng froze. “What did you say?”
“I heard your assistant was booking a flight ticket,” Pei Song scoffed. “Shouldn’t you have told me first?”
The room fell into a strange silence.
Shi Yancheng released his grip, his expression complicated. “You misunderstood.”
“Misunderstood what?” Pei Song said sarcastically. “Is the plane ticket not for you?”
Shi Yancheng wanted to explain, but seeing Pei Song’s stubborn expression, he ultimately said nothing.
“I’m tired,” Pei Song turned toward his room. “You should rest early too.”
The next morning, Pei Song left early without even having breakfast.
As soon as he arrived at the office, Li Ming hurried over, looking anxious. “Manager Pei, can we talk in private?”
They went to the break room. After making sure no one else was around, Li Ming pulled out a USB drive from his bag. “I found something by accident.”
“What is it?”
“I’ve been keeping an eye on Liu Yan for a while.” Li Ming looked nervous. “Two nights ago, I was working late and saw him go to the underground parking lot, so I followed him.”
Taking a deep breath, he continued, “He was in his car, talking to someone from Galaxy Real Estate. They thought they were alone, so they spoke freely. I hid behind a concrete pillar and recorded their conversation.”
Li Ming played the recording on his phone. Despite some background noise, Liu Yan’s voice was clear, “…As long as we follow the plan, once the stock price crashes, Galaxy Real Estate can…”
Then, he opened the files on the USB drive. “I did some digging and found out the person he was meeting is a Vice President at Galaxy Real Estate. I also traced the suppliers we’ve been working with, they all have hidden connections to the company.”
Pei Song examined the documents. On the surface, these suppliers appeared independent, but their ownership structures were incredibly complicated, all linking back to the same offshore company.
“How did you find all this?”
“I used to work in a securities firm, so I’m familiar with tracking corporate structures.” Li Ming explained, “I also asked a friend to check company registration records. The legal representatives of these suppliers are all relatives of Galaxy Real Estate executives.”
Pei Song frowned. “So Liu Yan is a pawn they planted in our company?”
“Most likely.” Li Ming nodded. “They’re trying to short the stock by sabotaging the Starlight Plaza project.”
“These are strong pieces of evidence,” Pei Song admitted, “but we need more to make a solid case. Keep quiet for now, we’ll gather more proof.”
By the time Pei Song returned to the hotel, it was already past 9 PM.
He hesitated at the door for a moment before finally swiping his key card and stepping inside.
