- Come on, What Kind of CEO Chases His Roommate Back to the Country?
- Chapter 42 - He Didn't Even Try to Avoid It!
Pei Song sat in front of the computer, his fingers flying quickly over the keyboard. Lines of commands flashed by as he quickly pulled up the full system logs.
“Show me the recent code update records,” he said without looking up.
The director had more to say, but he watched as Pei Song skillfully used various debugging tools, moving with fluidity and a level of experience that suggested he was no novice.
Three hours later, the office was filled only with the sound of keyboards clacking.
“I found it,” Pei Song suddenly said, “Look here.”
He pointed to a section of code. “This algorithm causes an overflow when processing large-scale data, and if it exceeds the threshold, it crashes the entire system.”
The engineers gathered around, gasping in awe. The problem was so subtle that without a deep understanding of the system architecture, it would have been nearly impossible to spot.
Pei Song quickly fixed the code, explaining as he went. “We need to add an exception handling mechanism here, and optimize the data structure…”
His explanation was professional and clear, no longer like the “novice” who had struggled to grasp basic concepts just a month ago.
“Give it a try.” He pressed the final enter key. The system began to reboot, and everyone held their breath. When the familiar interface lit up again, the office erupted in cheers.
The technical director walked over, his previously condescending attitude replaced by surprise. “When did you gain such a deep understanding of the system?”
“I’ve been learning for a while,” Pei Song said modestly, “Thanks to a friend’s guidance.” He thought of Shi Yancheng’s patient teaching over the past days and couldn’t help but smile.
“The optimization solution you proposed is quite clever,” the director said seriously.
Pei Song remembered Shi Yancheng’s first lesson, “The key to technology is being able to apply it in different contexts. It’s not about rote memorization, but truly understanding the principles behind it.”
From then on, the supplier’s attitude made a complete 180. Technical discussions no longer felt like lectures from above but became equal exchanges.
“Honestly, I was too abrupt in the previous email,” the director mentioned after a project meeting. “I apologize for requesting a change in the liaison. SNK’s decision to have you in charge of this project was indeed a wise one.”
Pei Song smiled. “I understand. Every project needs strict oversight, and I did have many things to learn back then.”
“But your progress has been remarkable,” the director said, admiring him. “To master such a complex system architecture in just one month is rare. Your learning ability and focus are impressive.”
Back at the company, Zhou Feng called Pei Song into his office.
“I heard the supplier’s attitude has changed a lot?” Zhou Feng asked with a smile.
“Yes, the communication is much smoother now,” Pei Song said. “By the way, they had requested a change of person…”
“I never thought about changing anyone,” Zhou Feng interrupted him. “Sometimes, the right kind of pressure can unleash potential. I believe you have that ability; you just needed an opportunity.”
Pei Song was taken aback. He hadn’t expected Zhou Feng to have such confidence in him.
“Alright, keep up the good work,” Zhou Feng said. “The project’s progress is going smoothly, and the company is very pleased with your performance.”
Just as the ‘Future Hotel’ project was flourishing, Shi Yancheng’s behavior began to make Pei Song feel uneasy.
Every day when he went to work, Shi Yancheng would always mysteriously leave, sometimes even missing their usual dinner time.
“Got something to do again today?” Pei Song watched as Shi Yancheng hurriedly packed his things.
“Yeah, I have a last-minute appointment,” Shi Yancheng said as he tied his tie. “You go ahead and eat when you get back. Don’t wait for me.”
Pei Song watched his hurried departure and felt inexplicably disappointed. This kind of situation had become more and more frequent, and even weekends had become unpredictable.
“What have you been busy with lately?” Pei Song casually asked.
Shi Yancheng paused his movements. “Nothing, just out and about.”
His evasive attitude seemed odd to Pei Song. Shi Yancheng had always been straightforward in the past, never one to hide things.
One afternoon, Pei Song was at a café meeting with a client. Through the floor-to-ceiling window, he noticed a familiar figure across the street.
Shi Yancheng was talking to a woman in a professional suit, standing close to her, looking quite intimate. The woman, visibly excited, was almost leaning into Shi Yancheng, and to Pei Song’s surprise, he didn’t even try to move away.
Pei Song’s heart sank. Was this the reason Shi Yancheng had been acting mysteriously lately?
“Manager Pei? Manager Pei?” The client’s voice pulled him back to reality.
“Sorry, I spaced out.” Pei Song forced himself to focus on the work at hand.
But that image lingered in his mind like a persistent slideshow. When he returned to the hotel in the evening, Pei Song saw Shi Yancheng in the study handling emails.
“Where did you go today?” Pei Song asked from the doorway, his tone somewhat stiff.
Shi Yancheng paused, his fingers lingering on the keyboard. “Just some stuff.”
“What could be so mysterious?” Pei Song couldn’t help but probe. “You’ve been running out a lot lately.”
Shi Yancheng turned to look at him. “What’s the matter?”
“Nothing,” Pei Song said casually, “You seem to be hiding something. Are you dating someone?”
Shi Yancheng didn’t reply. Pei Song continued, sarcastically, “That woman looked really put together, and you two seemed to get along well. Should I congratulate you in advance?”
Shi Yancheng burst into laughter.
“What are you laughing at?” Pei Song felt irritated. “Did I guess it right?”
“Are you talking about Manager Wang?” Shi Yancheng laughed so hard his shoulders shook. “She’s a real estate agent.”
“A real estate agent?” Pei Song was taken aback, then quickly realized. “You’re about to go back to Country D, why would you need a real estate agent? She really has no sense, coming to sell you something without even understanding your situation.”
Shi Yancheng didn’t confirm or deny, merely saying lightly, “The real estate agents in C City are a bit too enthusiastic.”
Pei Song awkwardly tried to cover up, “Well, you should just turn her down next time, no need to waste time.”
Shi Yancheng nodded but said nothing further. However, in the following days, he continued to disappear occasionally, and even more frequently than before.
During this period, Shi Yancheng seemed to have visited every high-end property in C City. Every day, he would find various excuses to leave, inspecting one real estate development after another.
