A week after moving in, Pei Song had barely seen Leon.

His roommate was either in the lab or locked in his room, with the sound of his keyboard clicking on and off. Occasionally, Pei Song would hear him murmuring in German over the phone.

This almost zero-contact arrangement made Pei Song feel slightly more at ease.

Though he still tensed up at the sound of the door, he was no longer as jumpy as when he first moved in.

It was another Saturday morning, and Pei Song finally got to sleep in.

When he opened Instagram to check his messages, he found many fans asking when he would upload another cooking video.

“It’s been a while since I cooked…” He glanced at the time, it was only 10 a.m. Leon’s probably at the lab by now.

The kitchen was spotless, clearly unused. When Pei Song opened the fridge, he found only a few bottles of mineral water and some takeout containers.

It seemed Leon survived entirely on takeout.

After tidying up the kitchen a bit, Pei Song started preparing the ingredients he had bought in advance. He planned to make Sichuan-style twice-cooked pork, one of the most popular dishes in his food blogging career.

The marinated pork belly simmered in boiling water, while chopped scallions, ginger, and garlic sat ready. The side dishes were prepped too.

As the oil heated, the rich aroma of garlic spread through the kitchen.

“Are you using Sichuan chili bean paste?”

A sudden voice startled Pei Song so much that he nearly dropped his spatula. He turned around to find Leon standing at the kitchen door, his light brown eyes fixed on the stove.

“W-When did you come back?” Pei Song struggled to calm his racing heart.

“Just now.” Leon leaned against the doorframe, still staring at the sizzling wok. Then, surprisingly, he added, “I smelled something good, so I came out.”

Pei Song froze. His usually cold and distant roommate not only recognized the seasoning but even pronounced it flawlessly.

“You know Sichuan cuisine?” Pei Song couldn’t help but ask.

Leon was silent for a moment as if debating whether to answer. Finally, he spoke. “My Chinese name is Shi Yancheng. My grandmother gave it to me, she’s from Sichuan.”

Pei Song hadn’t expected that answer at all.

He secretly studied Leon’s profile, trying to spot any Eastern Asian features on his sharp, chiseled face.

“So…” Leon’s gaze remained locked on the sizzling pork. “Making an extra portion wouldn’t be too much trouble, would it?”

Was he… asking for a share? Pei Song gave him a curious glance. Leon still wore his usual aloof expression, but his eyes never left the food. He even unconsciously took a step closer to the kitchen.

“Of course,” Pei Song said, amused. “But it might be pretty spicy.”

“That’s fine. I’ve eaten spicy food since I was a kid.” There was a hint of pride in Leon’s tone.

Watching his normally cold and expressionless senior light up over a Sichuan dish was unexpectedly amusing. Pei Song focused on seasoning the dish, controlling the heat perfectly. Soon, the fragrance intensified.

“Done.” He plated the steaming twice-cooked pork alongside some freshly stir-fried greens. “Try it.”

Leon sat at the dining table, picking up a piece of pork with elegant precision. After chewing for a moment, he commented in his usual detached tone, “Perfectly cooked.” Then, with a rare flicker of surprise in his eyes, he added, “It tastes a lot like my grandmother’s cooking.”

Pei Song hadn’t expected such a compliment. Leon usually spoke in short, commanding sentences, rarely giving detailed feedback. Yet now, as he continued eating, his movements grew faster despite his composed expression.

Before they knew it, more than half of the dish was gone.

“You always eat takeout?” Pei Song asked.

“Yeah.” Leon wiped his mouth with a napkin. “The Chinese restaurants here don’t get the flavor right.”

With that, he stood up and returned to his room. But just as he reached the door, he paused. “Thanks.”

Pei Song watched his tall figure disappear into the study, then began clearing the table. The lingering aroma in the kitchen was proof that the entire moment had been real. Who would’ve thought that this cold and distant Chinese-German man could show such nostalgia over a simple home-cooked dish?

Food really did touch the softest parts of people’s hearts.

Sitting in his study, the bluish glow from Leon’s laptop reflected off his sharp features. The clacking of his keyboard stopped abruptly as he frowned at a newly received email on his phone.

“Young Master, here’s the background check on your new roommate…” Leon skimmed through the butler’s report, his expression turning colder by the second.

“Who told you to investigate him?” His voice was icy as he made the call.

The butler hesitated. “It’s a routine check. Whenever you have new acquaintances—”

“Delete it. That’s rude.” Leon cut him off sharply. “From now on, unless I say so, don’t investigate anyone without my permission.”

“But, Young Master, your social circle…”

“I said delete it.” His tone dropped further. “Don’t make me repeat myself a third time.”

After hanging up, Leon stared at the email, his finger hovering over the delete button.

Then, he clicked on the attached link, which led to an Instagram account with nearly 100,000 followers.

The top video featured the same twice-cooked pork he had smelled earlier, vibrant in color, as if its aroma could seep through the screen.

In the comments, people from various countries praised the dish in different languages. Even some local German food bloggers had expressed interest in collaborating.

As Leon scrolled, he realized Pei Song wasn’t just good at Sichuan cuisine, he could recreate dishes from all over China with perfection. Even complex traditional German dishes were executed at a level that amazed the locals.

“I see…” Leon leaned back in his chair, deep in thought. No wonder that twice-cooked pork had tasted so authentic. This wasn’t just an ordinary international student’s cooking skills.

The report also noted that Pei Song was frequently invited to culinary events across Germany. Within M City’s student community, his cooking was widely recognized. Many people only attended student gatherings just for his food.

A slight smile tugged at Leon’s lips. His seemingly gentle and shy roommate… was more impressive than he had imagined.
