- Come on, What Kind of CEO Chases His Roommate Back to the Country?
- Chapter 38 - Divorced
“Mom…” Song Pei’s Father looked troubled.
“You dare ignore this?” Grandma Pei’s voice suddenly rose. “You’re the eldest son! You’ve been taking care of your brother since childhood, you need to help him again!”
“But Mom, this time it’s too big of a mess. It can’t be covered up…”
“No buts!” Grandma Pei was trembling with anger. “Have you forgotten who always let you have your way when you were kids? Now that he’s in trouble, you’re just going to abandon him? I raised you for nothing!”
Father Pei wanted to say more, but Grandma Pei suddenly dropped to her knees with a loud thud.
“Son, if you don’t help your brother, I’ll kneel here until I die! You were always my pride. Smart, successful, and now a chairman. But your brother? He never measured up to you! He finally gained some status in the company, and now, over this little thing, you’re going to let him be ruined?”
“Grandma!” Pei Song couldn’t hold back any longer. “This isn’t just ‘a little thing,’ this is a crime!”
“Shut up!” Grandma Pei exploded in rage. “This is a matter for the elders! Who gave you the right to speak?”
The next morning, just as Father Pei was about to leave for work, a prosecutor called, “Chairman Pei, regarding Pei Cheng’s suspected embezzlement case, we have officially filed an investigation. Please come to the prosecution office at 2 PM today to assist with the inquiry.”
Father Pei hung up, his hands trembling.
“What is it?” Grandma Pei had been watching his expression closely.
“The prosecution… has filed the case.”
Grandma Pei collapsed onto the sofa. “It’s over, it’s over… What do we do now? Son, you have to do something! Pull some strings, use your connections… This case cannot go forward!”
“Mom, I can’t help Pei Cheng this time…” Father Pei looked exhausted.
“You dare abandon him?!” Grandma Pei shrieked. “I’ll kill myself right here! Let the whole world see how you, the big brother, let your own flesh and blood rot in prison!”
But this time, no amount of pleading could change the outcome. Within two days, Pei Cheng and his two brothers-in-law were taken away for investigation.
Someone was secretly pushing this case forward, an extensive dossier had already been placed on the prosecutor’s desk, detailing every crime they had committed over the years.
No matter how much Grandma Pei cried and raged, she could no longer stop the legal process.
In SNK’s break room, laughter echoed freely.
“The Pei family’s downfall is spectacular,” Liu Yan sneered. “Not only did Pei Cheng embezzle millions, but he even has an illegitimate son outside. Imagine that! The dignified chairman of Pei Group unknowingly raising his little brother’s bastard. What a joke!”
“Exactly,” Li Ming chimed in. “They always put on such a noble front, but behind the scenes, it’s all filth. These so-called family businesses are all rotten at the core.”
“That’s why,” Liu Yan lowered his voice, his tone becoming even sharper, “Some people can act dignified all they want, but they can never hide their inherent lowliness.”
Pei Song couldn’t take it anymore. He kicked the door open. Before Liu Yan could react, Pei Song had slammed him against the wall. The force was so strong that Liu Yan’s back hit the wall with a loud thud.
“Say that again?” Pei Song raised his fist, his eyes burning with fury.
“Pei Song, calm down!” Li Ming hurriedly tried to pull him back.
“Don’t stop him! Let him hit me! Let’s see what the great Young Master Pei wants to do!” Liu Yan taunted despite being pinned.
“Enough! Stop it!” Zhou Feng’s voice boomed from the doorway.
He strode in and grabbed Pei Song’s arm. “Pei Song, calm down.”
The break room fell silent.
Zhou Feng swept his gaze across the room, landing on Liu Yan and Li Ming. “Mocking a colleague’s family situation is extremely unprofessional.”
Liu Yan and Li Ming lowered their heads, no longer daring to speak.
“Still standing around? Have you all finished your work?”
Once everyone else had left, Zhou Feng released Pei Song’s arm, his tone softening slightly. “I understand how you feel, but fighting in the office isn’t the solution.”
Seeing the anger still in Pei Song’s eyes, he patted his shoulder. “If people are talking behind your back, the best response isn’t your fists, it’s proving yourself with your skills.”
For the next few days, Pei Song threw himself into finishing the Jin Shang Xuan project.
From branding and business strategy to operational details, he meticulously restructured everything.
He wrote nearly a hundred pages on refining the restaurant’s core recipes. He even designed a “Heritage Revival Plan,” merging decades of traditional wisdom with modern management principles.
He analyzed market trends for the next three years and proposed a new strategy: premiumization, youth appeal, and international expansion for Chinese cuisine.
His work not only created a roadmap for Jin Shang Xuan’s future but also set a replicable model for the entire Chinese food industry.
Zhou Feng read through the thick report, his eyes flashing with admiration.
“This isn’t just a project summary,” he said sincerely. “This is an industry-changing innovation. Pei Song, your professionalism exceeds my expectations.”
Closing the file thoughtfully, Zhou Feng added, “By the way, the company is launching the ‘Future Hotel’ project next quarter. You should look into it when you have time.”
Pei Song blinked. “Future Hotel?”
“Yes, it’s SNK’s key project in the Asia-Pacific region,” Zhou Feng explained. “Once things settle down, we’ll discuss it in detail.”
After Pei Cheng and his in-laws were arrested, Pei Cheng’s wife immediately moved back to her parents’ house.
“Mom, don’t come here,” she said coldly, standing in the courtyard of her family home. “You’re not welcome.”
“I just want to see my grandson…” Grandma Pei choked out.
“See him?!” Her mother-in-law stormed out. “My daughter marrying into your family was our greatest shame! Now look! Embezzlement, an illegitimate child, one scandal after another! You even dragged my two sons into this mess! From today on, no one from the Pei family is allowed near our house!”
“You can’t do this! Let me see my grandson!”
“He’s my grandson! He has nothing to do with the Pei family!” The woman shoved Grandma Pei back. “Get lost!”
Grandma Pei stumbled backward, staring at the tightly shut door, tears streaming down her face.
The grandson she once held in her arms now, she couldn’t even catch a glimpse of him.
Overwhelmed, she headed to the train station, intending to return to her hometown. Father and Mother Pei rushed to stop her.
“Mom, come home,” Father Pei pleaded.
“No!” Grandma Pei yanked her hand away. “I’m going back to the village! I can’t stay here for another second!”
Seeing that they couldn’t change her mind, they let her go.
The old house in the countryside was still standing, but the neighbors’ attitudes had changed.
“Oh, if it isn’t the Pei family’s old lady,” a woman sneered. “I heard your younger son was real busy at the company, huh?”
Grandma Pei hid inside, afraid to go out. She could only watch the world pass through her window.
That afternoon, she overheard a group of elderly women gossiping outside.
“Did you hear? Zhang Yumei got divorced.”
“Zhang Yumei? Wasn’t she the one who was supposed to marry Pei’s eldest son back then?”
“Yeah! If Grandma Pei hadn’t broken them up, maybe their family wouldn’t have fallen this far.”
“Exactly! Zhang Yumei’s father is a big shot in the province now. If Pei’s eldest son had married her…”
