The next morning, Pei Song arrived at the SNK building in formal attire, gazing up at the sleek, modern structure. Sunlight reflected off the glass facade, casting golden glimmers, as if the building were coated in a dreamlike glow.

He arrived half an hour early, hoping to leave a good impression on the interviewers. The receptionist greeted him warmly, confirmed his appointment, and handed him a cup of warm water while asking him to wait.

While waiting, Pei Song observed his surroundings.

The open office design made the space feel airy and bright. Employees dressed professionally but not rigidly, their expressions relaxed and friendly.

“Mr. Pei, hello.” A woman in professional attire approached him. “I’m Lin Yuwei from HR.”

Lin Yuwei appeared to be in her early thirties, with well-applied makeup and a warm smile. She led Pei Song to a bright conference room with a panoramic view of the city.

“I found your resume very interesting,” Lin Yuwei began directly. “Studying in Germany while starting a business and growing a restaurant to this scale is quite impressive.”

To Pei Song’s surprise, the interview was rather relaxed. Instead of standard interview questions, Lin Yuwei showed great interest in his experiences in Germany.

“Can you walk me through the process of starting your restaurant? Especially how you balanced your studies and work?”

Pei Song shared his journey, from early struggles to how he gradually established his business. When he mentioned Michelin inspectors, Lin Yuwei’s eyes lit up.

“That’s exactly what we value, adaptability and resilience under pressure.” She nodded. “Your business acumen aligns well with SNK’s work style.”

As the interview progressed, Lin Yuwei introduced SNK’s company culture and future prospects.

“Although we’re a foreign company, we prioritize nurturing local talent in the Asia-Pacific region. Every year, we send outstanding young employees to headquarters for training, offering structured career growth.”

Pei Song’s heart stirred. This was exactly the kind of work environment he dreamed of, an international platform with a clear career path and excellent training opportunities.

“Mr. Pei, based on your performance today, I believe you’re a great fit for our company.” Lin Yuwei smiled at the end of the interview. “However, your future direct supervisor is currently on a business trip in Singapore. The next round of interviews will have to wait for his return. Also, the Vice President would like to meet you as well.”

Pei Song nodded. “I’m available anytime.”

“Great. We’ll notify you by phone once we confirm the schedule.” Lin Yuwei stood up. “Hope to see you as a colleague soon.”

As Pei Song walked out of the SNK building, he felt unusually cheerful. Everything about this company appealed to him, but most importantly, it felt solid and reliable. Clenching his fist, he silently vowed to seize this opportunity.

After the interview, he decided to grab lunch nearby.

Just as he stepped into a shopping mall, he spotted an unbelievable scene through a restaurant’s glass window.

His uncle was sitting with the troublesome mother and son from the birthday banquet, chatting and laughing as if they were close. His uncle even affectionately ruffled the boy’s hair.

That night, Pei Song lay awake, restless with questions.

Late at night, as he got up for water, he overheard a conversation in the guest lounge that shattered his worldview.

“This child, you must acknowledge him as A’Cheng’s,” Grandma Pei’s firm voice declared.

“Why should we?” His mother’s weak voice protested. “Clearly, it was A’Cheng’s own—”

“Why?” Grandma Pei sneered. “If this gets out, A’Cheng’s wife will definitely divorce him. Then her family will turn Pei Corporation upside down.”

Pei Song stood outside, heart pounding.

“But that’s too unfair to Song Song…” His mother tried to argue.

“No buts!” Grandma Pei cut her off. “A’Cheng is my youngest son, spoiled since childhood. Your family has always cleaned up his messes, this is no different.”

Pei Song clenched his fists. So that’s how it was. For years, his father had taken the blame for his uncle’s mistakes, all because of blind filial piety and the habit of being a scapegoat.

“Pei Song’s father,” Grandma Pei’s tone softened. “You’ve always been the responsible one. Help your brother this time too. Look at the company’s situation, it can’t handle any more turmoil.”

The room fell into a long silence before his father finally sighed, “Alright.”

That one word, “Alright,” was like a knife to Pei Song’s heart.

His father’s weakness, his mother’s suffering… it all made his blood boil.

That night, his mother collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital. Pei Song sat by her bedside, watching the IV drip fall, one drop at a time.

Over the years, she had endured so much for this family. Now, her condition has worsened.

Shi Yancheng arrived with breakfast and frowned at the dark circles under Pei Song’s eyes. “Go rest for a while. I’ll watch over her.”

Pei Song shook his head. “I can’t…”

Before he could finish, his phone vibrated. It was a call from SNK, likely inviting him to the second interview. But right now, his mind was too heavy, his body too exhausted. He could barely keep his eyes open.

Shi Yancheng swiftly took his phone. “Hello…”

After hanging up, he glanced at Pei Song, who had already fallen asleep by the bedside, his face weary and vulnerable.

That afternoon, Shi Yancheng contacted his team in Germany.

“Investigate Pei Cheng, Pei Corporation’s procurement manager, as well as his wife’s brothers. Focus on any illegal activities during their tenure at Pei Corporation.”

“Understood, Young Master. How deep should we dig?”

“Everything.” Shi Yancheng’s voice was ice-cold. “Any usable evidence. Especially proof of them taking high salaries without doing any real work.”

Soon, a detailed report landed in Shi Yancheng’s hands.

Pei Cheng had been utterly shameless over the years, abusing his brother’s indulgence and their mother’s favoritism to wreak havoc in the company.

Meanwhile, his wife’s brothers had exploited Pei Corporation’s name for personal gain.

Embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, rigged bidding, even siphoning off project funds. The evidence was ironclad. Shi Yancheng closed the report with a cold smirk.

Just then, Pei Song walked out of the hospital room. “What are you looking at?”

“Nothing.” Shi Yancheng shut his laptop. “How’s Auntie?”

“Much better.” Pei Song sighed. “But I was so tired this morning, I missed SNK’s second interview call…”

“I rescheduled it for you,” Shi Yancheng said. “Wednesday at 3 PM.”

“What? That fast?”

“Yes.” Shi Yancheng glanced at his exhausted face. “But before that, you need to rest properly.”
