Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the café. Pei Song sat in a corner, absentmindedly rubbing the rim of his coffee cup. The memories of last night lingered in his mind, keeping him awake almost the entire night.

Su Mi had already sent him the address of his new place, a high-end apartment near M University. The rent was higher than he had expected, but given the current situation, it was probably the best option.

Ding. His phone screen lit up.

“My cousin has classes this morning, so he can only meet you at 2 PM. Do you want me to go with you?” Su Mi asked.

Pei Song glanced at the time, it’s only 9 AM. “No need, I can go by myself. Don’t worry, I’m fine.”

“Alright then,” Su Mi replied, but couldn’t help warning him, “By the way, my cousin… he might not be the easiest person to get along with. Don’t take it personally.”

Pei Song chuckled and simply replied, “Okay.”

After what happened last night, all he wanted was a quiet place to stay. His roommate’s personality was the least of his concerns.

To pass the time, he decided to explore the area.

M University was one of the oldest technical universities in D Country. The campus was a blend of historic red-brick buildings and modern laboratories. Walking along the tree-lined paths, he saw students rushing by with notebooks in hand and professors discussing research on the lawns.

The atmosphere helped him relax, at least a little.

By 1:45 PM, he arrived at the apartment building. The exterior was sleek and modern, with tight security and keycard access. That gave Pei Song some relief, at least James wouldn’t be able to find him easily here.

Taking the elevator up to the 27th floor, he stepped out to a breathtaking view of the city skyline. Pei Song took a deep breath and rang the doorbell to Unit 2704.

A few seconds later, the door opened.

Standing before him was a tall young man, at least 1.9 meters (6’3″) in height, towering over Pei Song. He wore a simple black turtleneck and dark casual pants, yet his presence was both elegant and distant.

His sharp features hinted an Asian heritage, but his light brown eyes were cold and piercing.

“You’re Spencer?” The man asked directly, his deep, cool voice carrying an authoritative tone that made Pei Song instinctively take a half-step back.

“Yes, hello…” Pei Song replied, feeling a bit uneasy.

The overwhelming aura of the man was difficult to adapt to, especially after what he had just been through.

“Come in.” Su Mi’s so-called ‘cousin’ stepped aside, his scrutinizing gaze seemingly piercing through him.

The entryway was simple, with a few unpacked boxes lying around. It seemed like the apartment owner had only recently moved in as well.

“Leon,” the man introduced himself briefly, giving Pei Song a once-over before adding, “Your room is on the right.”

The living room was spacious and well-lit, decorated in a minimalist Nordic style with a cool-toned color palette. Scattered on the couch were a few German textbooks, and the laptop on the coffee table displayed lines of dense code.

Pei Song noted that despite Leon’s young appearance, his demeanor carried an intimidating authority. His movements were graceful yet restrained, exuding an air of unapproachability.

The vacant room at the end of the hallway was much larger than Pei Song had expected.

Floor-to-ceiling windows offered an unobstructed view of the city skyline, allowing in plenty of natural light. The sleek white furniture and soft carpeting gave the space a sophisticated touch.

“Rent is 2,000 euros per month, including utilities. Comes with two parking spaces,” Leon stated flatly, leaning against the doorframe. “Any issues?”

For an apartment near M University, it’s undeniably luxurious. Pei Song hesitated for a moment but, considering his circumstances, nodded. “No problem.”

“Good.” Leon turned towards the living room. “Check out the room if you want. The lease is on the coffee table, read it and sign when you’re ready.”

That was it? Pei Song was slightly surprised. Most people would at least discuss schedules or living habits before agreeing to a roommate.

As if sensing his confusion, Leon paused and, without looking back, said, “I don’t care about your habits, and you don’t need to worry about mine. As long as we don’t disturb each other, we’re fine.”

That indifferent attitude actually made Pei Song feel relieved. At least this guy didn’t seem like James, someone who would be overly interested in his business.

After signing the contract, Leon handed him a set of keys. “Keycard, front door key, and your room key. The garage is on B2, register with the management if you need parking.”

“Thanks.” Pei Song took the keys and couldn’t help but notice Leon’s hand. Long, slender fingers with defined knuckles, the kind of hand that looked like they belonged to a pianist.

“I suggest you move in as soon as possible,” Leon suddenly said, glancing at Pei Song with a meaningful look. “Su Mi said your current place isn’t very safe.”

Pei Song froze, just how much had Su Mi told him?

“Just that you need to move urgently,” Leon said, still detached. “I’m not interested in the details.”

With that, he turned and walked into his study, clearly ending the conversation. Pei Song let out a breath of relief and quickly gathered his things to leave.

As he put on his shoes at the entryway, he heard the rapid clacking of a keyboard coming from Leon’s study, the rhythm sharp and urgent, as if he’s venting something.

Before leaving, Pei Song couldn’t help but glance back.

Through the half-open door, he saw Leon sitting upright, focused on his screen, his sharp side profile bathed in the afternoon sunlight.

Su Mi’s words echoed in his mind, “He’s not the easiest person to get along with.”

That was true. Leon’s first impression was cold and distant, his every movement carrying an air of untouchable authority. But for some reason, that distance made Pei Song feel oddly at ease.

At least this person seemed completely uninterested in him, nor did he seem like someone who would try to cross boundaries.

Right now, that was exactly what Pei Song needed. A quiet environment to collect himself.

Back at his temporary place, he began packing. Even though Leon had said he could move in anytime, Pei Song decided to wait until Leon wasn’t home to do so. That careful mindset left a bitter taste in his mouth.

When had he, someone who used to be so open and warm, become this cautious?

As he sorted his belongings, he noticed multiple unread messages from James. Before he could even open them, his fingers moved on their own, shutting off his phone.

The fear from last night crept back in, making his hands tremble uncontrollably.
