“And what about you?” Shi Yancheng asked softly. “What do you think of me?”

Pei Song’s ears instantly turned red. “Stop trying to trap me.”

But Shi Yancheng refused to let it go. “Come on, tell me.”

“I just want to change clothes right now,” Pei Song muttered as he glanced down at his wine-soaked shirt. “This is all your fault. There’s no way this shirt will come clean. That’s the second one you’ve ruined.”

“I’ll buy you new ones,” Shi Yancheng whispered in his ear. “But you really do look amazing in this shirt.”

Pei Song shoved him away. “I knew you were up to no good.”

“I’ve never claimed to be a gentleman when it comes to you,” Shi Yancheng said, pulling him even closer. “But I promise, until you’re completely ready, I won’t do anything you don’t want. And if I ever make you uncomfortable in any way, don’t avoid me. You have to tell me openly and honestly.”

Leaning against him, Pei Song listened to the strong, steady beat of his heart. “I’m not that easy to scare, you know.”

Shi Yancheng lowered his head to look at him. “What do you mean by that?”

“Exactly what it sounds like.” Pei Song glanced up at him, a sly glint in his eye. “I’m a man too, you know. It’s not like I don’t understand what’s going on in that head of yours.”

Shi Yancheng froze for a moment, his breath catching. “Are you sure you want to challenge my self-control like this?”

“What do you think?” Pei Song teased, pecking him lightly on the lips. “But not tonight. I’m going to shower and change.”

Shi Yancheng grabbed his wrist. “So from now on, I can freely express how I feel?”

“Do what you want,” Pei Song pulled his hand away, “but if you go too far, I’ll let Max bite you.”

Hearing its name, Max immediately wagged its tail and trotted over.

“See?” Pei Song patted Max on the head. “He’s very protective of me.”

Shi Yancheng chuckled. “Then I’d better stay on Max’s good side.”

As Pei Song headed toward the bathroom, he heard Shi Yancheng call softly behind him, “Song Song, I really do love you.”

“I know,” Pei Song paused mid-step, his ears turning an even deeper shade of red. “I love you too.”

Shi Yancheng grinned so wide it nearly reached his ears, joy filling his gaze.

Maybe because they’d finally spoken their hearts, the last barrier between them seemed to melt away. Even the air felt softer, and over the next few days, everything between them felt lighter, more at ease, even their breathing.

A few nights later, just as Pei Song had finished showering and was getting ready for bed, his phone suddenly rang. Seeing that it was “Assistant Zhao,” his heart tightened inexplicably.

At this hour, Assistant Zhao never called without reason.

“Hello, Assistant Zhao.”

“Mr. Pei, I’m sorry to disturb you so late,” Assistant Zhao sounded anxious, “but the Chairman suddenly suffered a gastric hemorrhage during a business dinner. He’s at People’s Hospital right now.”

Pei Song snapped fully awake. “When did this happen? How is he now?”

“About half an hour ago,” Assistant Zhao said. “The doctors are working on him, but I don’t have all the details yet.”

“I’m on my way.” Pei Song hung up, quickly throwing on clothes as he rushed out.

Hearing the commotion, Shi Yancheng emerged from the study. “What happened?”

“My dad’s in trouble,” Pei Song said while buttoning his coat in a hurry, getting them mismatched in his rush. “He’s at People’s Hospital.”

Shi Yancheng came over and fastened the buttons properly for him. “I’ll drive you.”

Max sensed the tension in the air and stood up as well, tail drooping.

“Be good, Max,” Pei Song gently patted its head. “Stay home and wait for us.”

On the way, Pei Song kept checking his phone, afraid to miss any updates. Shi Yancheng took his hand, which was resting on his knee. “Don’t worry. I’m here with you.”

When they arrived at the hospital, Assistant Zhao was already waiting outside the emergency room.

“He’s inside,” Assistant Zhao said. “The doctors said the bleeding is serious. They’re giving him a transfusion now.”

“How did this happen so suddenly?” Pei Song asked.

Assistant Zhao sighed. “There’s been trouble with the Lianfa Group project. The Chairman has been working nonstop to resolve it. They finally reached an agreement today, but the other party insisted on celebrating with drinks. You know the Chairman’s stomach problems… he’s been exhausted lately, and then the alcohol…”

Pei Song clenched his fists.

Just then, the emergency room doors opened and a doctor came out.

“Family of the patient?”

“I’m his son,” Pei Song quickly stepped forward.

“The patient is stable for now,” the doctor said. “But the area of gastric bleeding is extensive. He’ll need to be hospitalized for observation. His chronic stomach condition is also quite severe, he must rest and recover properly.”

Pei Song let out a breath. “Thank you, Doctor.”

In the ward, Pei’s father lay pale and weak on the bed. Seeing Pei Song enter, he forced a small smile. “Making you rush here in the middle of the night… that’s my fault.”

“Don’t talk,” Pei Song said softly, walking to his bedside. “Just rest. Don’t worry about the company right now.”

Shi Yancheng also stepped in. “Uncle, focus on getting better first.”

Pei’s father nodded, his eyelids already heavy.

Assistant Zhao added from the side, “Chairman Pei, don’t worry. I’ll take care of things at the office.”

Looking at his weary father, Pei Song felt a tangle of emotions in his heart.

He had chosen his own path, but seeing his father like this still made his heart ache.

“I’m staying here tonight,” Pei Song said.

“The IV will take at least three more hours,” Shi Yancheng checked the drip bottle. “The doctor said he needs complete rest. Why don’t we go home and come back early tomorrow? The nurse will stay and watch him.”

Pei Song hesitated.

“Son, go home,” his father murmured, forcing his eyes open. “There’s a nurse here. Don’t worry about me.”

Assistant Zhao also said, “Mr. Pei, I’ll stay at the hospital tonight. If anything happens, I’ll let you know right away.”

Pei Song looked at his sleepy father, then finally nodded. “I’ll come first thing in the morning. Assistant Zhao, please take good care of him for me.”

“Of course.”

Shi Yancheng gently pulled him toward the door. “Let’s go. We have to get up early tomorrow. If you stay and worry all night, Uncle Pei will only feel worse.”

On the way home, Pei Song was quiet.

“What are you thinking?” Shi Yancheng asked.

“Even though I work at SNK now, it still hurts to see my dad like this,” Pei Song leaned back in his seat. “He’s holding up the whole company by himself, but his health is so bad.”

Shi Yancheng reached over and ruffled his hair. “This isn’t your fault. Everyone chooses their own path. Your dad wants you to follow the life you believe in.”

When they got home, Max immediately ran over to greet them.

Sensing the heavy mood, it didn’t jump around as usual but simply rubbed gently against Pei Song’s leg.

“Let’s get some sleep,” Shi Yancheng said. “Tomorrow I’ll go to the hospital with you.”
