- Come on, What Kind of CEO Chases His Roommate Back to the Country?
- Chapter 112 - New Year’s Gift
When he returned to his room, Pei Song’s phone lit up. It was a message from Shi Yancheng, “Check your pocket.” Puzzled, Pei Song reached into the pocket of his pajamas and felt something warm and metallic.
When he pulled it out, he saw it was a key, specifically, a key to a Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
“I already have a car,” Pei Song texted back. “My dad’s old one is still with me.”
Shi Yancheng replied almost instantly, “That car doesn’t suit you anymore. You’re now a senior manager at SNK. You’ll be attending more business events, so you need a car that looks respectable but not flashy. The E-Class fits you perfectly, steady and elegant, without being ostentatious.”
Pei Song thought about it and realized he was right. Most of the time, he either rode with Shi Yancheng or took the subway. His father’s old car had been sitting in SNK’s underground parking garage, collecting dust.
And after the New Year, there really would be plenty of business meetings outside the office. Driving his dad’s old car would feel too casual for those occasions.
“Got it. I’ll make good use of it.”
“Don’t feel pressured,” Shi Yancheng replied. “People in the business world care a lot about these details. You’re handling billion-level projects now, working with top-tier companies. A suitable car is not just a sign of respect for your partners, it’ll also give you more confidence during negotiations.”
Pei Song turned the key over in his hand, thinking of the video conference with the German team two days ago. They’d mentioned wanting to visit the Asia-Pacific region for an on-site inspection.
Feeling a little guilty, he typed, “I still haven’t figured out what to get you as a gift.”
“You being happy and healthy is the best gift,” Shi Yancheng replied. “Besides, this isn’t a gift, it’s for work.”
Pei Song carefully placed the car key on the bedside table, his fingertips lingering on the cool metal surface for a moment. After a brief hesitation, he opened a shopping website, his gaze lingering for a long time on a familiar brand.
In the end, he clicked “Confirm Order,” the corners of his mouth curving into an unconscious smile of anticipation.
The next morning, Pei Song groggily opened his eyes and immediately saw a neatly folded set of new clothes placed by his bedside.
This was a tradition his mother had insisted on for years. Every New Year, ever since he was a child, she would prepare a brand-new outfit for him.
Even after he’d grown up and kept saying he could buy his own clothes and that she didn’t need to go to the trouble, she never stopped this little ritual.
This year was Pei Song’s zodiac year, so his mother had prepared a bright red down jacket for him, it stood out vividly in the morning light. It was paired with black casual pants and a simple pair of sneakers.
When he went downstairs, Shi Yancheng was already waiting for him in the dining room. The moment Shi Yancheng saw Pei Song in the new outfit, his eyes lit up. Pei Song rarely wore bright colors, but the red jacket made his skin look even fairer and gave him a gentle, handsome air.
“Xiao Shi, this is for you,” Pei Song’s mother said a little shyly, handing Shi Yancheng a carefully wrapped gift box. “Auntie wasn’t sure about your size, so I only bought a scarf. I wanted to get you some clothes too, but I was afraid they wouldn’t fit…”
Shi Yancheng took the box solemnly and opened it. Inside was a dark gray cashmere scarf, soft, understated, and elegant.
“Thank you, Auntie,” he said sincerely. “I really like it.” As he spoke, he draped the scarf around his neck.
While Pei Song’s mother went to the kitchen to finish preparing breakfast, Shi Yancheng slipped behind Pei Song, who was adjusting his collar, and gently wrapped his arms around him.
His voice was a little regretful. “I didn’t have time to get you new clothes this year… but from now on, every New Year’s outfit will be bought by me.” His tone lowered, warm and soft. “But Auntie has great taste, this red looks really good on you.”
Just as Pei Song was about to say something, he felt something pressed into his hand.
“New Year’s money,” Shi Yancheng whispered against his ear. “You need a red envelope to make it a real celebration.”
Pei Song pulled out the red envelope and opened it, only to freeze. “A black card?”
“Just a supplementary card,” Shi Yancheng chuckled softly, reaching up to ruffle Pei Song’s hair. “From now on, buy whatever you want. You don’t have to ask me.”
Pei Song looked at the black card in his hand, feeling a mix of emotions. He knew that for someone like Shi Yancheng, this probably wasn’t a big deal, just an ordinary decision. But in Pei Song’s heart, their relationship had only just begun. This complete, unquestioning trust made him a little uneasy.
“Shi Yancheng,” Pei Song said softly, “isn’t this… a bit too soon?”
“Song Song,” Shi Yancheng gently took his hand, “I’m not giving you this card to tie you down. I just want you to know that you can trust me completely, the same way I trust you.”
Looking into his eyes, Pei Song suddenly understood. “Then you’d better not make me mad in the future,” Pei Song teased, waving the card lightly. “Or I’ll max it out just to get back at you.”
“I’d love that.” Shi Yancheng smiled, then leaned in closer and murmured in his ear, “But as your boyfriend, I’d rather pick out everything you like myself.”
Pei Song’s ears instantly turned red. Just as he was about to reply, he heard his mother’s footsteps coming from the kitchen and hurriedly pulled away from Shi Yancheng’s arms.
Shi Yancheng also stepped back naturally, though he couldn’t hide the smile in his eyes.
From the kitchen came the sound of a spatula stirring in the pan, and Max trotted into the room, tail wagging happily. The dog was wearing a blue knitted sweater, neatly stitched and perfectly fitted, making its glossy black fur look even shinier.
“Mom, did you make this?” Pei Song squatted down, curiously touching the sweater on Max.
“I couldn’t sleep last night, so I finished it before dawn,” his mother said with a smile, poking her head out of the kitchen with her apron still on. “I heard dogs can see blue best, so I picked this color. Max is part of our family now, of course he needs new clothes for New Year’s too. I just hope it fits.”
Max seemed to love his new outfit, circling happily around Pei Song’s legs, occasionally lowering his head to glance at his blue sweater, his tail wagging with excitement.
Shi Yancheng squatted down and gently patted Max’s head. “Auntie even understands what dogs like best.” He leaned in closer to Pei Song and lowered his voice. “Now the three of us all have new clothes.”
Pei Song’s ears turned red again as he pretended to focus on adjusting Max’s collar.
Max, as if understanding the mood, happily squeezed between the two of them, rubbing back and forth until its blue sweater was completely wrinkled.
