- Come on, What Kind of CEO Chases His Roommate Back to the Country?
- Chapter 1 - Midnight Crisis
At 3 AM, the dormitory was unusually quiet, with only the occasional hum of cars passing by, breaking the silence.
Pei Song lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling, his ears alert.
He heard his roommate, James, stumble into the entryway, crashing into the shoe cabinet. The crisp sound of a bottle hitting the floor sent a shiver down Pei Song’s spine.
“How many times has this happened now…” He sighed, sitting up.
For over two years, James had been the perfect roommate—tidy, friendly, and often bringing back local specialties to share.
As a senior at University Y, James had given Pei Song plenty of advice on both studies and life. But in the past two weeks, everything has changed.
James started drinking heavily, coming home completely wasted almost every night.
Pei Song had found empty bottles in the kitchen and living room more than once. He had tried to talk to James about it, but his roommate had only laughed it off, saying it was just a normal part of social life in his country.
A series of chaotic footsteps echoed outside, followed by a heavy thud. Unable to ignore it any longer, Pei Song threw on a jacket and stepped out of his room.
“James? Are you okay?”
The dim glow of the living room lamp illuminated James, who was clumsily trying to get up from the floor. He’s wearing his favorite blue plaid shirt, now crumpled beyond recognition, the collar stained with traces of alcohol.
“Oh… Spencer… my dear Spencer…” James lifted his head, a drunken smile on his face, his blue eyes unusually bright.
Pei Song frowned. Something felt… off. He bent down to help him up. “You drank too much. Let me take you to your room.”
“No!” James suddenly grabbed his wrist. “I have to say this tonight!”
Pei Song froze. “Say what?”
“I like you, Spencer.” James staggered to his feet. “I’ve liked you since the first time we met. Do you know how painful these past two years have been? Watching you cook in the kitchen every day, seeing how gentle and polite you are to everyone…”
Pei Song stood paralyzed, his mind going blank. He had never imagined that James, who had always looked after him like an older brother, harbored such feelings.
Even worse, this wasn’t the James he knew.
“You’re shaking, Spencer…” James reached out to touch his face, his breath reeking of alcohol. “Don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you…”
“James, you’re drunk.” Pei Song turned his head to dodge his hand, forcing himself to keep his voice steady. “Let’s talk about this tomorrow—” Before he could finish, James suddenly lunged forward, strong arms locking around Pei Song’s shoulders. The overpowering scent of alcohol engulfed him.
It was only then that Pei Song realized James, who had been working out for years, was half a head taller and much stronger than him.
Normally, James controlled his strength with care. But right now, that strength was the biggest threat.
“Don’t push me away, Spencer,” James murmured, his warm breath tickling Pei Song’s ear. “I’m graduating soon and going back home. At least let me…”
His face moved closer. Pei Song could see every rough stubble on his chin. The blue eyes that had always been gentle were now bloodshot, flickering with something dangerous.
A chill ran down Pei Song’s spine.
As James’ lips were about to touch his, instinct took over. Years of taekwondo training kicked in, and Pei Song grabbed James’ wrist, executing a perfect over-the-shoulder throw. With a heavy thud, James hit the floor, groaning in pain. He clearly hadn’t expected the usually mild-mannered Pei Song to have such reflexes.
“I’m sorry.” Pei Song stood still, his voice trembling. “But please, keep your distance.”
James lay there motionless, his shoulders starting to shake. At first, Pei Song thought he was crying. But then he realized it was laughter.
“Of course… That’s so like you, Spencer.” James propped himself up, forcing a bitter smile. “Even now, you’re still so gentle. Even now, you still say ‘I’m sorry’…”
Pei Song didn’t respond. He just took two steps back, putting space between them.
“I ruined everything, didn’t I?” James chuckled self-deprecatingly. “Two years of trust… gone.”
A suffocating silence filled the room.
In the distance, the wail of an ambulance siren pierced through the night. Finally, Pei Song spoke. “I’ll be staying at a friend’s place tonight. Tomorrow… I’ll move out.”
James didn’t try to stop him. He simply bowed his head, his shoulders trembling. “I’m sorry, Spencer… I’m really sorry…”
Pei Song hurried back to his room, his hands fumbling as he packed the essentials. His fingers trembled. His mind was in chaos. Then, his phone buzzed. It was a message from his friend, Su Mi.
“Song Song, are you still up? I saw your WeChat post, what happened?”
Pei Song suddenly remembered the message he had instinctively posted earlier: “Can anyone take me in for the night…?”
He briefly explained the situation to Su Mi. Su Mi instantly abandoned his game and offered to pick him up.
“Wait! I have a better idea!” Another message popped up. “My cousin has a spare room in his apartment near M University. He’s a bit cold, but the place is nice. Interested?”
Pei Song hesitated. He knew Su Mi came from a well-off family. If they were friends, his cousin probably wouldn’t make things too difficult for him. And right now, he didn’t have many options.
“Alright.” He replied. “Can you ask him for me?”
After hastily packing his bags, Pei Song stood in the middle of his room, taking a deep breath. This place, where he had lived for over two years, was now suffocatingly unfamiliar.
He quietly opened his door. James was no longer in the living room. But the overturned shoe cabinet and scattered bottles still told the story of what had just happened.
Pei Song quickly put on his shoes and slipped out of the dorm without making a sound. It wasn’t until he stepped outside that he realized his back was drenched in cold sweat.
The night air was chilly, but he didn’t care. He walked briskly under the dim streetlights, heading toward the subway station.
Another message from Su Mi arrived just in time.
“My cousin agreed. You can check out the room tomorrow. But just a heads-up… he’s… well, you’ll see.”
Pei Song let out a breath of relief and replied with a simple “Thanks.”
M University was a bit far from his current dorm. But that was exactly what he wanted. Right now, he just wanted to get as far away as possible, and never see James again.
