- Chapter 89 - Half a Stick of Incense Is Enough
The young man looked a little helpless. After all, his father was a born gambler. He could only say, “Master Ba, why are you so certain that this little lady will win?”
Wang Ba smacked his subordinate on the head.
“No wonder I’m the Master Ba, and you’re just a tag-along. With a brain like yours… really, I don’t know who you take after!” He shook his head with exaggerated regret. “Your intelligence is worrying!”
The young man beside him couldn’t help but mutter, “And I’m still your son!”
Wang Ba blinked, then nodded. “True enough. But you sure didn’t take after me!”
Wang Yuan could only purse his lips in frustration. Who else but his father would be so eager to put a green hat on himself…
Another slap landed on his head. “Brat, you’re cursing me in your heart again, aren’t you?”
Wang Yuan could only protest, “These five are stronger than the last five. I’ll wager… wager she’ll need two sticks of incense to beat them!”
Another slap.
“Truly stupid! I bet she’ll finish in half a stick of incense! I’m telling you, you’re bound to lose this time, hand over the money!”
Wang Yuan muttered defiantly, “That’s not certain!”
Wang Ba chuckled. “Just watch, boy!”
Sure enough, beyond the screen, Ying Su needed no more than half a stick of incense before all five men were sprawled on the floor, groaning in pain, unable to rise again.
No one could quite tell where this woman’s martial arts came from, every strike was vicious, straight to the vital points. Fast, precise, ruthless, utterly unavoidable!
Liu Huang’s face had turned ashen. The ten men he had brought were all lying on the floor thanks to this woman. Watching her step toward him, he swallowed nervously. ‘Is… is she going to strike me too?’
But Ying Su had no such intention. She simply walked back to the table, picked up a clean pair of chopsticks, and calmly began eating as if nothing had happened.
Liu Huang paled, terrified that at any moment she might plunge the chopsticks into his chest. He was restless and uneasy, realizing he had gravely underestimated her.
If the Qinglong Hall Master learned of this disgrace, he wouldn’t sympathize, he’d only see him as a fool who had lost face. Worse still, the other hall masters would mock him for it.
Thinking it through, Liu Huang decided, once he got back, he must never breathe a word about tonight.
Behind the screen, Wang Ba burst into proud laughter and said to Wang Yuan, “Hand over the money! Wasn’t I right? With a head like yours, if I didn’t look after you, you’d be useless!”
Wang Yuan’s face flushed with shame. “I’ve got no money left! You already cleaned me out last month!”
“You little brat! No stake, and you dare bet with me? Empty-handed gambling with your old man, rebellious!” Wang Ba smacked him again.
Wang Yuan shouted back, “You were the one who forced me to bet! How’s that my fault?”
“Hmph! Let me tell you why I was so sure, when she fought the first five, the total time didn’t even reach a stick of incense. With all five coming at her together, she clearly knew she could handle them. Son, you really need to learn from me!” Wang Ba looked unbearably smug.
Ying Su lifted her gaze toward the screen. The two of them weren’t even trying to hide their voices, it was impossible not to hear them.
Liu Huang had no appetite left, staring at Ying Su’s every move like a man awaiting execution.
At the table, only Ying Su and Lu Da were eating heartily. After finishing, Ying Su put down her chopsticks, poured a cup of tea, and drained it. She smiled. “No wonder this is the biggest restaurant in Shili Town, the food is excellent!”
Setting down the cup, she stood up. “Meal’s done, I’ll be taking my leave.”
Liu Huang’s eyes widened in disbelief. As she was about to step out, he finally couldn’t help but ask, “You… you asked me here for… what purpose?”
Ying Su glanced back at him, then at Lu Da. “To have dinner with you, of course. Now that we’ve eaten, I’ll be going.”
“You mean… that’s it?” Liu Huang stammered.
“What else did you think?” Ying Su smiled and walked out. Wang Ba signaled for Lu Da, quickwitted, he quickly rose and followed Ying Su.
Then Wang Ba and Wang Yuan emerged from behind the screen. Wang Ba slapped Liu Huang on the shoulder and roared with laughter, “Hand over the wager! Since I won, I’ll overlook your little rule-breaking stunt this time!”
Liu Huang’s face was dark, but he pulled out a banknote from his sleeve and tossed it over. Wang Ba laughed loudly. “Relax. Apart from our Hall Master, I won’t tell anyone else. And our Hall Master keeps his mouth shut, your secret’s safe.”
Liu Huang felt humiliated. Wang Ba wasn’t of Qinglong Hall but of Heiwutang Hall, and indeed, the Heiwutang Hall Master was known for staying out of others’ feuds.
Meanwhile, outside, Lu Da hurried after Ying Su, panting.
“Miss! Miss, wait for me!” His booming voice and Ying Su’s male attire drew curious glances from the townsfolk. Ying Su frowned slightly and stopped.
Lu Da rushed up, out of breath. “Miss, our Master Ba would like to meet you.”
Ying Su arched a brow. “And who is this Master Ba?”
Lu Da grinned. “Master Ba is under Heiwutang Hall Master’s command. He oversees all the docks in Fengyang County. The Liu Huang you met just now serves Qinglong Hall Master. Our Master Ba actually bet with him today, all for your sake!”
Ying Su’s lips curved. “And what was the bet?”
She had already heard the two behind the screen gambling over her fight. The rough-voiced one had amused her, and she had deliberately finished the fight in half a stick of incense, just as he said.
Lu Da explained with a smile, “Our Master Ba wagered that you’d win. For your sake, he even set the rule that Liu Huang’s men couldn’t gang up on you, they had to fight one by one. But that Liu Huang broke the rule when he got desperate!” His face was full of indignation.
Ying Su gave a faint smile. “Then I should thank your Master Ba for his help.”
Lu Da chuckled. “Not at all, not at all! Our Master Ba simply wants to meet you. What do you say…?”
Ying Su’s lips curled slightly. Since Wang Ba controlled all the docks of Fengyang County, there was no harm in meeting him.
She nodded, “Lead the way.”
