- Chapter 88 - The Dish Has Already Gone Cold
At that moment, a knock came at the door. From outside, a waiter called, “Sir, the dishes you ordered are ready.”
Liu Huang nodded. One of his men opened the door and said, “Bring them in!”
The waiters filed in with trays of food. They ignored the two men groaning on the floor as if they didn’t exist, calmly set the dishes on the table, and then closed the door behind them as they left.
Not long after, another waiter entered Ground Room No. 1. He addressed the white-robed man standing by the window, “Of the men Liu Huang brought, one’s arm is broken, and another was lying on the floor clutching his bleeding head when I went in. From the looks of it, the wound was caused by a cup lid.”
The man in white turned around, it was none other than Bai Chuyu, the second son of the Bai family from Jiangnan. His clear eyes glimmered with interest, his gentle, jade-like expression unchanged. He asked, “Interesting. And what do you think of that woman’s skill?”
“Though I didn’t witness the fight directly, judging by those men’s injuries, the attacker’s strikes were ruthless and aimed at vital points. I would say she is nearly on par with your subordinate.” The “waiter” deliberately used the word subordinate, a clear sign of acknowledging the woman’s martial prowess.
Bai Chuyu’s elegant brows lifted slightly. “To hear you say ‘on par’ that makes me look at her with even greater respect.”
Bai Wu, the man disguised as a waiter, was one of the Bai family’s top five secret guards. For him to make such an evaluation meant that the rustic woman’s ability was indeed remarkable.
The Canal men still thought they could fool everyone. During the raid on Beishan, when Wu Huang was captured, Bai Chuyu had already sent men to investigate. He knew long ago that the traffickers of Beishan were connected to the Canal gang. He had only wanted to see how they would end up.
Though Liu Huang wasn’t reckless, he lacked Wu Huang’s caution. Not realizing Bai Chuyu already knew the truth, he boldly brought his men to settle things right in Bai Chuyu’s territory. To him, it was just a free show.
What he hadn’t expected was the involvement of that woman, a rather intriguing woman at that! Her background, her words, her decisiveness, all of it was… interesting.
“Truly, the ignorant know no fear!” At last, Liu Huang spoke. His words were full of ridicule.
Ying Su’s phoenix eyes lifted slightly. “You flatter me,” she said coolly, picking up the chopsticks set on the table and, as if nothing were wrong, actually started eating.
One of the men standing behind Liu Huang suddenly barked, “You think you’re fit to share a table with Master Liu?”
“Of course. The ones who aren’t fit are already standing back there, aren’t they?”
Her words instantly infuriated the three men behind Liu Huang. They clenched their fists, itching to rush forward and beat her down to erase her arrogance.
Liu Huang himself burned with anger. Though he had made a wager earlier, all he wanted now was to teach this insolent woman a harsh lesson. Ignoring the bet entirely, he gave a signal to the three men, and they attacked at once.
Three pairs of hands against her two, how could she possibly withstand six hands with only her own?
A cruel smile tugged at Liu Huang’s lips as he picked up his chopsticks.
Yet Ying Su’s expression did not change in the slightest. Gripping her chopsticks, she met their assault head-on. Since they showed no mercy, she had no reason to hold back either.
With a cry of pain, one man staggered back, her chopsticks had already pierced through his arm, blood welling as she yanked them free.
The other two grew tense, striking more viciously. Ying Su braced against the table, slid her stool back with a push, and dodged both their blows. In the same motion, she drove the chopsticks into one man’s shoulder. Then, pulling them free again, she thrust at the third man’s chest, stabbing straight into the flesh above his heart.
For the first time in his life, that man felt death brush so close. The beautiful woman before him wasn’t a flower, but a deadly demon.
Ying Su, however, was precise. The chopsticks sank only an inch, not fatal. It wasn’t yet the time to kill.
Still, everyone in the room froze. To see a pair of chopsticks rammed into a man’s chest, what chance of survival could there be?
But Ying Su only smiled faintly, gripping the chopsticks and pulling them back out in one smooth motion. “Better I take them out for you now. Otherwise, when some quack doctor tries later, you might just lose your life.”
Hearing that, the men dared to hope they could still live.
Liu Huang’s face darkened. “Young lady, to strike so ruthlessly, have you no regard for the code of the jianghu?”
Five of his men were already disabled, while this woman hadn’t even shifted her seat, only her stool had slid back a little. How infuriating!
Ying Su smiled lightly. “I am but a mere woman, and Master Liu wants to speak to me of the code of jianghu?” Wasn’t that laughable? He could bring men to attack her, a lone woman, yet she was expected to show mercy? Against threats, her response would always be fast, accurate, and merciless.
“Fine, fine, fine! Then I’ve nothing more to say!” Liu Huang slammed his chopsticks on the table. At once, the five men sitting with him all stood up. Having already abandoned the wager, he just wanted to beat her down. Ying Su’s words had simply given him an excuse.
A faint smile curved Ying Su’s lips. Now that’s better. One by one? At that pace, by the time I finished, the food would already be cold. If we’re going to fight, let’s fight properly.
Lu Da, watching from the side, couldn’t hide his unease. He’d already seen this woman’s arrogance before, but he hadn’t expected her to have such audacity, facing five at once. Yet, for some reason, he felt she couldn’t possibly lose.
As the five charged together, Ying Su finally rose to her feet. She moved toward the empty space on the left side of the room. Better to fight there than risk spilling the dishes on the table, such a waste of good food would be a shame.
The five, having learned from their comrades’ defeat, dared not be careless. But caution was no guarantee of victory. In the end, everything depended on skill.
And Ying Su clearly did not see them as opponents worth her attention. They might be the Canal gang under Liu Huang, but compared to her, someone who had once lived by the blade, licking blood, killing to survive, they weren’t even worth a glance.
Behind a folding screen on the right side of the room, a bald man lit a stick of incense in a burner. He turned to the young man beside him and said, “Let’s make a bet, how long will it take that little lady to finish them off?”
