Ying Su pulled a shiny silver ingot from her chest and smiled even more wickedly. Her beautiful phoenix eyes were both dark and seductive. “Didn’t you want silver? As long as I cut your son a few times, all this silver will be yours! Anyway, someone greedy enough to trade her son for money wouldn’t care, right?”

Wang Lanhua’s eyes were nearly blinded by the dazzling ingot, greed flickering across her face.

Ying Su suddenly turned around and slashed at a tree as thick as a man’s waist near the courtyard gate. With just a few chops, the tree was already tottering. She brought her knife down hard, the blade sinking deep into the trunk.

Holding the cleaver in one hand, she turned back to Wang Lanhua and Li Guihua with a radiant smile. “My knife skills aren’t so bad, are they? With this strength, using it to cut people seems most fitting!”

The villagers watching nearby were all stunned. The last time Ying Su had beaten Wang Lanhua’s husband, Li Dazhi, the scene was still vivid in everyone’s memory. And now she had chopped a tree of this size nearly in half with nothing but a kitchen knife. Everyone was shocked, this woman was really not someone to provoke!

Even Li Dalang, Liu Chuncao, and Madam Li stood there dumbfounded, staring at her in disbelief.

Ying Su casually pulled the cleaver out of the tree, still smiling beautifully. Holding the knife in one hand, she walked straight toward Wang Lanhua. Wang Lanhua’s face went deathly pale. Even her son, who had been wailing before, froze in place, staring at her in terror.

Seeing things go south, Li Guihua thought to herself that if this mad widow kept causing a scene like this, it would end badly for everyone. If she truly lost control, something disastrous might happen. Taking advantage of Ying Su’s focus on Wang Lanhua, Li Guihua quickly slipped away with her son.

Out in the fields, Li Dazhi was at work when someone from the village came to tell him what was happening. The moment he heard his wife had gone to stir up trouble with Shen Cuihua again, he instantly remembered the beating he’d gotten last time. Terrified, he dropped everything and ran back to the village.

By the time Ying Su reached Wang Lanhua, the woman was white as a sheet. Her son, as if seeing a ghost, burst out crying again.

Some villagers wanted to step forward to stop her, but they were too scared of the gleaming cleaver in Ying Su’s hand. Wang Lanhua shrank back, trembling. “You… what do you want to do?”

Ying Su arched her distant-mountain brows. “Didn’t you say you wanted silver?”

Wang Lanhua’s eyes were nearly cut open by the sight of that knife. She no longer dared to mention silver. Swallowing hard, she stammered, “N-no… I don’t want it anymore…”

Ying Su raised the cleaver in one hand, her eyes sweeping coldly across the crowd. “Let me make this clear today. In my eyes, my son is more precious than anything. I can’t stand seeing him suffer even the slightest grievance. Whatever you’ve got, bring it to me instead!”

At her words, the villagers’ hearts tightened. ‘Who would dare?’ Just looking at Ying Su, slaying gods if they came, slaying Buddhas if they appeared, never following common sense, anyone who didn’t already understand that Shen Cuihua the widow was not to be provoked might as well be brain-dead!

By now, Li Dazhi had arrived, pushing his way through the crowd. He saw his wife collapsed on the ground, with Shen Cuihua holding a cleaver over her and the child. Terrified, he shouted, “Shen Cuihua!”

The shout made Ying Su jolt and turn toward him.

Li Dazhi rushed over to his wife and child, quickly scooping up his sobbing son. With a wary look at Ying Su, he said, “My wife was being foolish! You’re a bigger person, broad-minded as a prime minister’s stomach that can hold a boat. I’ll take this troublesome woman away right now!”

Not waiting for her to react, Li Dazhi yanked Wang Lanhua off the ground, cursing as he dragged her off. “You wretched woman, always causing trouble for me. Just wait until we get home, I’ll teach you a lesson!”

Ying Su didn’t stop him. Her goal was only to send a warning, to make it known that her son was not someone to be bullied.

And so the farce came to an end. The villagers dispersed, though still buzzing with excitement. Even the village head hadn’t shown up despite being informed, and the reason was clear, Village Head Zhang was a smart man.

Lately, Ying Su had been sending things over to his house. Aside from the fact that one shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds them, there was also the matter of Li Dalang’s new furniture shop in town. Most villagers couldn’t read, but Village Head Zhang could. The sign read “Weixuan Home Textiles.” Just from the name, he knew that the store couldn’t possibly belong solely to Li Dalang’s family.

Although Village Head Zhang was curious about where Ying Su had gotten her money, after the incident with Li Ergou, he had already seen that this woman was extraordinary. Someone who survived great calamities was destined for later fortune!

Once the villagers had all left, Ying Su took her proud little bun by the hand. After saying goodbye to Madam Li and the others, they headed home.

At home, Ying Su said nothing to her son, simply began washing vegetables and preparing the meal.

The little bun, feeling neglected, stood frozen in the courtyard. After a while, he quietly crept into the kitchen, watching her busy figure. His nose stung, and he sniffled softly before moving to the stove to start the fire.

When the meal was ready, mother and son ate in silence.

Biting his rice, the little bun found it tasteless. After a long time, he whispered, “Mommy, please don’t be angry. I won’t dare again…”

Ying Su set down her chopsticks and said seriously, “Do you know what you did wrong?”

In a low voice, the little bun answered, “I shouldn’t have hit someone.”

Ying Su shook her head and spoke earnestly, “I’m not angry that you hit him. He cursed at me, and you hit him to protect me. That made me very happy.”

The little bun blinked at her, dazed. ‘Mommy wasn’t mad that he fought?’

His wide-eyed, stunned look was so cute that Ying Su couldn’t help reaching out to rub his head. “What makes me angry is that you fought. You’re still so little. If you couldn’t beat the other person and get hurt, what would we do then?”

At that, the little bun felt warmth spread through his chest. The corners of his mouth lifted as he thought, ‘So Mommy was just worried about me. She didn’t want me to get hurt…’

Because of this fight, Ying Su decided she would teach her son some self-defense skills from now on.

After dinner, she applied medicinal powder to his bruises, then fetched water to wash his feet. His little feet were soft and tender, and as she touched them, her heart melted like warm water. This tiny life existed because of her. The feeling was truly wonderful.

When she was done, she dried his feet with a cloth. Just as she picked up the basin to pour the water out, the little bun scrambled down from the bed. “Mommy, let me pour the water. You sit here, I’ll wash your feet too.”
