- Chapter 47 - Splashed With a Bucket of Water
Although Ying Su said she wanted to build four rooms, she didn’t like the typical ancient layout, one main hall in the middle, two rooms on the east and west sides, plus a side room. What she really preferred was a modern-style duplex apartment. That way, there would be more rooms and it would be much more convenient to live in.
The design she drew was already the simplest version, and in theory, it shouldn’t be too difficult. But when she saw Uncle Zhang San staring at the blueprint without saying a word for a long time, her confidence wavered. She tentatively asked, “Uncle Zhang San, do you think the house can be built according to this drawing?”
Only then did Uncle Zhang San snap back to his senses. With an eager look, he smiled at Ying Su and said, “Of course! Why not? I’ll keep this drawing with me. Your house will be built exactly according to it. I may not have built one like this before, but I’ve got the skills. I’ll definitely get it done for you!”
Hearing his assurance, Ying Su immediately broke into a smile. She didn’t mind that Uncle Zhang San seemed intent on keeping the blueprint for himself. As long as her house ended up comfortable, that was all that mattered.
By noon, the foundation had already been laid. No matter how well a house was built, if the foundation wasn’t solid, it was useless. But once the foundation was properly set, construction would progress quickly.
At first, Ying Su didn’t want the little bun to come, afraid he might fall or get hurt. But she couldn’t resist when he begged again and again, his big watery eyes looking up at her pitifully. Her heart softened. Thinking of how eager he was to see their new home, she finally allowed him to come along.
The little bun was sweet-mouthed, constantly calling out “Uncle” and “Big Brother.” His clever tongue and adorable looks made him hard not to like. Although the workers were a bit distant at first, they quickly warmed up to him, especially since he was both handsome and sweet-talking. Soon, he was already familiar with the men working on the house.
At lunchtime, the villagers from this village went back to their own homes to eat. Those from neighboring villages had already been told that meals wouldn’t be provided, so they had brought dry rations.
Softhearted Madam Li couldn’t bear to watch them eat those hard, dry cakes, so after discussing with Ying Su, she helped steam their cakes in the pot to soften them and cooked a big pot of porridge-like noodle soup for them to drink.
Throughout the day, many villagers came by to watch the construction, especially Wang Lanhua. She stood there sour-faced, making nasty remarks, while staring enviously at the workers.
Her words all implied that the reason Shen Cuihua could afford to build a house was because she had done shameful things, and that the silver she was using was dirty money.
Ying Su was someone who always repaid kindness with more kindness, and insult with insult, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. If she stayed silent now, the onlookers would think she was easy to bully. Then, in the future, anyone would dare step on her. No, she wanted everyone to know that she, Ying Su, was not someone to be trifled with.
So, while Wang Lanhua was still gossiping loudly with the other women, Ying Su suddenly picked up a basin of muddy water and splashed it straight onto her.
Caught completely off guard, Wang Lanhua was drenched head to toe. The nearby women had been quick enough to dodge, and Ying Su hadn’t intended to splash anyone else anyway, her target had only ever been Wang Lanhua. Muddy water streamed down Wang Lanhua’s clothes, soaking her completely.
“Oh my! Why were you standing there? I didn’t see you! Look, I splashed you all over, I’m really sorry!” Ying Su was the first to speak, her face all sincerity as she apologized.
The other women who understood what was going on covered their mouths and giggled. Wang Lanhua froze for a moment, then let out a shriek and lunged at Ying Su, ready to claw at her.
But Ying Su wasn’t the type to just stand there and be beaten. In fact, she had been meaning to teach Wang Lanhua a lesson anyway. Pretending to dodge, she occasionally “accidentally” struck back.
To the onlookers, it looked like she was just defending herself while retreating, but in reality, Wang Lanhua was the one getting the worst of it, hidden spots on her body were pinched black and blue by Ying Su.
Wang Lanhua was so furious she was nearly going mad. She cursed loudly, “You little whore! I’ll beat you to death!”
Madam Li and Liu Chuncao, who had been busy nearby, rushed over when they heard the shouting. At a glance, they saw Wang Lanhua bullying Cuihua, so they quickly pulled her back. Madam Li scolded sharply, “You dare bully our Cuihua right in front of her own house? Do you think just because she has no man at home, you can push her around like this?”
“Even if Cuihua doesn’t have a husband, she still has me, her sister-in-law, and her elder brother to back her up! Don’t think you can bully her at will!” Liu Chuncao also glared fiercely at Wang Lanhua and spat.
The women who had been watching finally stepped in to pull them apart. By now, everyone had clearly seen the Li family’s stance. Wang Lanhua wanted to keep causing trouble, but seeing the three of them glaring daggers at her, she had no choice but to back down. Still, she muttered under her breath, “Shameless little whore… always bullying others…”
“What did you say?” Ying Su raised her brows, her expression dark as she glared at Wang Lanhua.
Wang Lanhua flinched a little but, spotting her husband approaching, immediately regained her confidence. With backup at hand, her arrogance surged again. Wiping the mud from her face, she sneered at Ying Su, “So what if I called you a little whore? Who knows what shameful things you’ve done behind people’s backs? With that foxy look of yours, and you even gave birth to a bastard—”
Before she could finish, Ying Su’s foot landed squarely in her stomach. Wang Lanhua’s face turned pale, and she doubled over clutching her belly, unable to straighten up.
“Wang Lanhua! With such a filthy mouth, do you want me to cut your tongue out?” Ying Su’s face was cold as ice, her phoenix eyes glinting with a chilling light.
For a moment, everyone around was stunned by her menacing aura. Wang Lanhua’s husband, Li Dazhi, was the first to react. He rushed over to support his wife and shouted at Ying Su, “So what if we called you a whore? If you were really clean, how could you have given birth to a little bastard?”
“Very good…” Ying Su’s pale face was as still as a dead lake, her phoenix eyes deep and unfathomable. Madam Li, standing closest to her, was the first to sense something was wrong. A bad feeling swept through her heart, and she hurriedly reached out to grab Ying Su, wanting her to hold back.
But before she could stop her, in the blink of an eye, Ying Su’s fist had already smashed into Li Dazhi’s face. She followed up with a spinning kick, sending him crashing to the ground, and then mercilessly pounced on him, punching and kicking without restraint.
Of course, Li Dazhi wasn’t about to just take a beating without fighting back. The moment her fist landed, he tried to retaliate. As a farmer used to working the fields all year round, he was full of strength. How could a frail little woman possibly overpower him?
And yet…
Moments later, Li Dazhi was beaten black and blue. Hugging his head, he howled in pain, “Hurry up and pull this crazy woman off me! She’s going to kill me!”
It wasn’t that he didn’t fight back, he simply couldn’t. This little woman’s blows really hurt! He had no way to defend himself and could only barely protect his face.
