Ying Su accepted the short blade, drew it out in one motion. The blade glinted with a chilling light, white and blinding, cold iron so sharp it could sever even a strand of hair with a breath. She nodded in satisfaction. “A fine blade.”

Not long after Ying Su and her group set out by boat, a band of black-clad men rushed to the docks and boarded another inconspicuous vessel. Among them was none other than Shen Changge, who had just returned to Xiling Village.

That boat set off in the exact same direction as Ying Su’s.

After more than three hours on the water, they reached Tongzhou dock. Even before disembarking, Ying Su noticed guards at the exit checking every traveler.

She exchanged a hand signal with Wang Yuan, who quickly understood and quietly directed the other six men to scatter apart.

“What’s your relationship? Where are you from?” One guard blocked their way, his gaze lecherously fixed on Ying Su.

Wang Yuan smoothly shifted his body to shield her, cutting off the man’s filthy stare.

“We’re a young couple who just married,” Wang Yuan replied calmly. “She hasn’t been able to conceive, so we heard there’s a famed doctor in Tongzhou who treats this. My mother told me to bring her here for a consultation.” They had originally planned to pose as siblings, but noticing several of the patrolmen also staring hungrily at Ying Su, he instantly changed their story.

“Is that so? Doesn’t look like it. You’re still wet behind the ears, how could you already have a wife?” One sharp-eyed guard cut straight to the truth.

Ying Su narrowed her phoenix eyes slightly, then lowered them, adopting the demeanor of a timid young wife. Hiding behind Wang Yuan, she softened her voice, “To tell the truth, my husband is a few years younger than me.”

Wang Yuan quickly fished two bits of silver from his sleeve and forced a smile. “Gentlemen, have a drink on us. We need to catch tonight’s boat back, so please give us a little leeway.”

The guard weighed the silver in his hand, his face breaking into a grin. His gaze turned salacious again as it lingered on Ying Su. “That’s more like it. Easy enough.”

But the next moment, he suddenly barked, “Seize them both!”

In an instant, men swarmed from all sides, surrounding Ying Su and Wang Yuan. The man who had taken the bribe stepped forward, sneering. “My eyes are sharp. I can spot a virgin at a glance. Think you can fool me? Go home, break yourself in, then try again!”

Being called out as a virgin in front of everyone made Wang Yuan’s fair face flush scarlet. Fury flared in his eyes as his hand went to his waist, ready to strike.

Ying Su pressed lightly on his hand to steady him. Calmly, she stepped past him, swaying her hips deliberately as she approached the guard. She leaned close and whispered a few words.

The man burst out laughing, his eyes shooting Wang Yuan a peculiar look.

“Well, that’s rough on such a pretty wife of yours. If you get lonely, sweetheart, you can always come find me.” He spoke lewdly, even taking the chance to grope her small hand.

Ying Su kept her charming smile, lowering her head shyly.

The man roared with laughter again and waved his hand. “Let them through!”

On the boat trailing behind them, when the guards had first shouted to arrest Ying Su and Wang Yuan, the vessel had already docked. Yet no one disembarked. From a cabin window, a pair of deep, black eyes observed everything at the pier. His gaze followed Ying Su’s figure until she vanished from sight.

The black-haired, black-robed man sat straight-backed, like a bamboo stalk. His sharp brows drew together slightly. “That woman… why is she here?”

Behind him stood a row of men in black clothes and black hats. Three pairs of eyes also followed Ying Su, two full of surprise, one of suspicion.

After leaving the docks, Wang Yuan’s face twisted with awkwardness. He held back and held back, then finally blurted, “What did you whisper to that man just now?”

Ying Su’s lips curved in a teasing smile. She looked at him playfully. “You probably don’t want to know.”

Wang Yuan’s face burned even redder. Deep down, he could guess well enough, it surely hadn’t been anything proper.

After much effort, they finally gathered the latest intelligence about the Canal Gang and even learned the location of the private prison where the Qinglong Hall Master was holding captives.

The Canal Gang headquarters had split into two factions, the Qinglong Hall Master allied with the Baihu Hall Master, while the Zhuque Hall Master declared support for the Heiwutang Hall Master.

The four halls had always been evenly matched. Now, the two sides stood in perfect balance. But since the late gang leader had favored the Heiwutang Hall Master, if the latter gained power, he would be considered the rightful heir.

“Still not chaotic enough,” Ying Su thought. She only wished the Canal Gang would fall into even greater turmoil, that would be her chance to fish in troubled waters!

Back when she had advised Wang Ba, she had already set her sights on the Canal Gang, this fat piece of meat. Ordinary life was comfortable, yes, but she couldn’t pass her whole life in dull monotony. She was born restless, always craving a taste of danger and thrill.

That night, at Shizi Courtyard on Tongzhou’s Northwest Street, the temporary base of the Qinglong Hall, the compound blazed with lanterns. Patrols passed in groups of three or five.

“Do you think our Hall Master can take down the Heiwutang Hall Master?” One guard muttered to another.

The other looked around warily. Seeing no one nearby, he lowered his voice, as if sharing a secret. “Word is, the Heiwutang Hall Master is the old gang leader’s illegitimate son.”

“What? An illegitimate son?” The first guard whispered in shock.

The second smirked, whispering proudly, “You know the Canal Gang’s rules, leadership can be passed, but never inherited. No successor can be blood kin of the previous gang leader. Our Hall Master has evidence. With that, no matter what, the Heiwutang Hall Master can never be the leader.”

The two whispered conspiratorially, not noticing the dark shadow that dropped silently from the wall and crouched in the flowerbed behind them.

Once they walked off, Ying Su began to rise, but another figure staggered over, and she quickly pressed herself flat against the ground.

The newcomer reeked of wine, staggering as he hummed a tune. Eyes half-shut, he fumbled open his trousers and began to relieve himself.

A foul stench filled the air. Moving without a sound, Ying Su crept up behind him. One hand clamped over his mouth, the other became a blade, striking hard at his neck. He collapsed unconscious.

She dragged him into the flowerbed, stripped off his outer garment with swift efficiency, and donned his reeking clothes. Then she stuffed a drug-laced pill into his mouth to ensure he’d remain out cold until dawn.

She bound her hair high like a man’s, but deliberately let a few strands fall at her temples, just enough to conceal part of her face.
