- Chapter 131 - Night Raid on the Zhang Family
Ying Su pulled out a small round tube from her sleeve, opened the lid, and drew out a stick of incense. She lit it and placed it in the incense burner in the room. Then she grabbed some fruit from the table, lifted up a bunch of grapes, reclined lazily on the soft couch, and began eating them slowly.
The thin, short incense burned quickly, flickering with tiny flames, and soon a rich, heady fragrance spread throughout the room. This was an incense she had gotten from Wang Ba, the kind of knockout smoke that street thugs usually used for petty theft. It was Ying Su’s first time using it, so she wasn’t sure how effective it would be.
When the incense had burned out, Ying Su hopped off the chair, spat out a grape skin from her mouth, and snapped her fingers several times in the air. The whole room remained utterly silent.
She walked over to the bed and kicked Master Zhang’s body. Still no reaction. Ying Su muttered under her breath, “Well, this incense works pretty well.”
A dark night with high winds, the perfect time for murder and arson!
Ying Su yanked up a blanket and threw it over Master Zhang’s head. The corners of her lips lifted into a crooked, dangerous smile that looked especially menacing in the dark.
Next came a storm of punches and kicks, pouring down mercilessly on Master Zhang’s head. The two people on the bed, already unconscious from the smoke, didn’t stir at all.
“Looking like a pig and you still dare covet your grandma’s beauty?” Ying Su cursed between blows. “Don’t even bother pissing in a pot to see your own damn reflection! If this were before, grandma would’ve gouged your eyeballs out already! And you dare try to snatch my Jianyang Butterfly, don’t you know the heavens are high and the earth is wide?”
She slammed a heavy kick into Zhang Hairu’s bloated belly, her face full of disgust. “Taking advantage of your sister isn’t that easy!”
If it had been her old self, Zhang Hairu would’ve been dead already. But ever since she came here, her mentality had shifted a lot. She wasn’t the assassin Ying Su from her past life anymore, but a woman with a child, parents, and family. She didn’t want to bring trouble to them.
After venting her fury and beating Zhang Hairu senseless, Ying Su went searching through every room in the Zhang household until she finally found the Jianyang Butterfly.
The room was filled with the pleasant fragrance of medicine. Ying Su raised her brows. Could this be where the Zhang family stored herbs? But seeing the man lying on the bed, she immediately dismissed the thought.
The Jianyang Butterfly and the ink orchids were both placed on the table. Under the moonlight, Ying Su carefully scanned the room. It looked no different from the other rooms in the Zhang residence. She sniffed the medicinal scent, then found a medicine chest by the bed.
On the chest were carved a few small traditional characters, Imperial Medical Institute – Wang Shouyi.
“Medical Institute? Wang Shouyi…” The name immediately made her think of a famous seasoning brand from her previous life in Country Z.
Opening the chest, she found it filled with jars and bottles, many containing rare medicinal ingredients. She could barely recognize a few.
A flicker of thought crossed her eyes. Could it be that the one living in this room was a physician? Closing the chest carefully, her gaze fell onto the two pots of orchids on the table.
In that instant, everything clicked. This room must belong to someone from the Imperial Medical Institute, someone who clearly loved orchids. She didn’t know what Zhang Hairu’s connection with this Imperial Physician Wang was, but anyone worth Zhang Hairu’s effort to please with orchids had to be extraordinary.
Originally, Ying Su had planned to take the orchids away, but her thoughts shifted. Since Wang Shouyi had managed to enter the Imperial Medical Institute, his medical skills must be impressive. She had always kept Madam Shen’s illness in mind. Now that such an Imperial Physician had fallen into her lap, she couldn’t let the opportunity pass.
So Ying Su slipped away quietly, just as quietly as she had come. She waved her hand and left without taking anything.
The next day, after breakfast, Ying Su sent the little bun to school, then washed the two sets of dirty clothes by the river behind the house and hung them up to dry. After locking the courtyard gate, she set off alone for Dongjun Mountain.
She wanted to try her luck again and see if she could find another orchid. If she managed to locate an even rarer species, she was sure she could bait that Imperial Physician.
But her luck wasn’t as good this time. Even after combing through the area where she had collected herbs before, she couldn’t find a single one.
The mountain air was refreshing, so Ying Su decided to walk deeper in. The ground here was covered with footprints, villagers clearly passed by often.
After walking further, the surroundings grew quieter, the trees thicker and sturdier than those at the foot of the mountain. She could hear the calls of partridges in the distance, and the ground was carpeted with a thick layer of fallen leaves.
She searched for a long time but didn’t find anything unusual. Bored, Ying Su wandered about, plucked a wildflower from the ground, and bit it between her teeth.
Spotting a tall tree, she hitched up her skirt and tucked it into her waist, then climbed up with ease. Standing on a high branch, she looked out over the distance.
For a moment, it felt like she was back in her previous life, training in the Amazon rainforest. But this place was nothing compared to that.
In the rainforest, even the most inconspicuous creature could end your life at any moment. Without real skill, survival there was impossible.
It was both hell and paradise. The Amazon rainforest held the richest biodiversity in the world, with millions of species. In modern times, over a quarter of the world’s medicines were derived from rainforest plants. It was a place full of wonders, beyond the reach of science.
By comparison, Dongjun Mountain was utterly barren.
Ying Su scanned the area from her perch, but still found nothing of interest. She was just about to jump down when a faint rustling sound came from afar. Her instincts screamed danger, and her whole body tensed.
Judging by the snapping of branches and the heavy thuds on the ground, whatever it was had to be a large wild animal. And at that speed… Ying Su’s brows arched. It was definitely chasing prey with everything it had.
Could there really be leopards or tigers on this mountain?
The threatening aura was even more terrifying than a lion or tiger. Frowning, Ying Su’s body reacted instantly. She sprang to a sturdier spot in the tree, hooked her legs tightly around the trunk, pressed herself close, and held her breath, waiting.
Before long, a dark figure burst into her vision. She frowned. A wolf?
A massive wild wolf came charging through, its ferocious momentum utterly frightening. But it wasn’t chasing prey, it looked more like it was fleeing for its life.
Ying Su relaxed slightly, though unease lingered in her heart. How could a lone wolf give off such a terrifying aura?
Little Theater:
Ying Su kicked the author to the ground, glaring furiously, “Where’s my man?”
The author rubbed her sore backside, trembling as she pointed toward the depths of the forest, “Isn’t your man over there, riding a seven-colored wolf through the dust?”
Ying Su turned her head, froze for ten minutes straight, and cursed, “Damn it, this… makes no sense!”
