- Chapter 120 - Murder in the Street
A flash of cold light swept past the knees of the men who hadn’t even had time to react. Before they could see what had happened, their knees suddenly gave way, and their legs went weak, forcing them to collapse onto the ground. At the same moment, Ying Su straightened up, hooked her toe lightly under a large blade lying on the ground, and flipped it into her hand.
The gleaming blade reflected a blinding light. Ying Su raised her hand, and the knife came down.
Only the sound of metal striking the ground rang out in a sharp chorus. A thin line of blood spurted from the wrists of several men, and their hands dropped limp and powerless.
The two men still fighting with Wang Ba on the other side saw the scene and immediately lost their nerve. Both stared warily at Ying Su, and as she walked toward them step by step, they dropped their weapons in fright and ran for their lives.
By the time Shen Changyun came down, what he saw was the rough men fleeing in panic. Ying Su was still radiating a cold and fierce aura, like a god of slaughter, so terrifying no one dared approach.
But Shen Changyun wasn’t afraid. He ran anxiously over to her, pulling her around to look her up and down, and asked with concern, “Second Sister, are you all right? Are you hurt anywhere?”
Hearing such concern warmed Ying Su’s heart, and the icy aura around her melted away. She shook her head and said softly, “I’m fine.”
Wang Ba came over, gasping for breath, and laughed. “Good girl, it’s thanks to you. Otherwise, I fear I’d have lost my life here today!”
Ying Su gave a faint smile. “Indeed,” she said bluntly, with no false modesty.
Wang Ba burst into hearty laughter. From the end of the street came the sound of hurried footsteps. Leading the group that approached was his son, Wang Yuan.
When he drew closer, Wang Yuan’s delicate face showed a trace of concern. He asked Wang Ba, “Are you hurt?”
“Your Lord Ba, hurt? With my skills, even three or five gangs couldn’t touch me!” Wang Ba, still exhilarated after escaping death, joked carelessly with his son.
Wang Yuan knew very well his father’s abilities. He glanced at the chaotic mess on the ground, then at the blood spattered on Ying Su’s body, and thanked her earnestly, “Thank you for lending a hand today. I’ll remember this favor.”
He was born with fine, proud features, completely unlike Wang Ba. Especially now, with such seriousness on his face, it made others want to tease him.
The corners of Ying Su’s lips curved in a playful smile. “No need for thanks, nephew. Saving your father is only right.”
Wang Ba rubbed his shiny bald head and chuckled. “I’ve got a good eye, don’t I? This girl I chose to recognize is the right one, the best one, the most outstanding one!”
Ying Su couldn’t help but laugh, letting out a soft chuckle. Glancing at Wang Yuan’s tightly furrowed brow, she could almost picture three thick black lines appearing across his forehead.
Wang Yuan was so flustered from the teasing that his delicate face flushed red, though he still forced himself to hold steady.
“What on earth happened today?” Ying Su asked.
With Wang Ba’s influence in Fengyang City, plus the backing of the Canal Gang, no one should dare target him this way. Usually, Fengyang County’s governance was clear and orderly, and Officer Zhou often patrolled the streets. Yet today, with the entire street in chaos, not a single officer had appeared.
Clearly, someone had ordered them not to intervene. That alone showed how serious the matter was.
Wang Ba’s face grew heavy. “I’ve run into some trouble, and now I’ve dragged you into it too.”
“What trouble?”
Wang Ba was about to explain, but then noticed Shen Changyun standing at Ying Su’s side. He asked, “And this is…?”
“My younger brother, Shen Changyun,” Ying Su said with a smile.
Wang Ba laughed and nodded. “So this is your brother?” He said to Shen Changyun, “Little Brother Changyun, I’m Wang Ba. You can just call me Big Brother.”
Shen Changyun was nervous inside. Wang Ba’s rough aura made him look anything but a decent man. But he still forced a small smile and nodded politely.
“If you’re unhurt, let’s head to the gambling house to talk. It’s really unsafe for me out here right now,” Wang Ba said seriously for once.
Ying Su thought for a moment, then nodded. She said to her brother, “Little brother, let’s go with Brother Wang Ba for a bit. You can head back later.”
Shen Changyun nodded. Even if Ying Su told him to leave, he wouldn’t feel at ease letting her go alone with such a group of fierce men.
“I’ll just go up for a moment to return this hairpin.” Ying Su lifted the silver hairpin in her hand and smiled.
Upstairs, Wu Shumei, who had been leaning against the window, had already seen everything happen in the street. Her father stood beside her, watching Ying Su with a sigh. “So it’s her!”
When the fight broke out earlier, one of the clerks had already run to inform Shopkeeper Wu. The Bai family had influence in both the underworld and respectable circles, but they rarely meddled in such matters. They knew everything in Shili Town, but chose only to watch as bystanders.
When he heard his daughter was at the shop, Shopkeeper Wu came upstairs, worried she might be frightened.
After glancing outside, he immediately recognized Ying Su as the young woman who had once come to sell a recipe to the restaurant. The more he looked, the more impressed he felt. Such ruthless skill, coming from a village woman, no wonder she’d been able to save the Bai family’s young miss.
“Father, you know her?” Wu Shumei asked.
Shopkeeper Wu smiled and nodded, praising her. “She once sold a recipe to our restaurant. That popular dish, Poached Fish Fillet in Chili Oil, came from her.”
Wu Shumei’s gaze fell on the dish on the table. Her expression turned slightly awkward. She’d just spent so much effort at the table introducing the dish to Ying Su, never expecting it had actually come from her in the first place.
The more Wu Shumei thought about it, the more irritated she felt. Since she had sold the recipe, why didn’t she say so and just let her go on explaining? Was it all just to laugh at her?
At that moment, Ying Su came quickly upstairs. She walked to the table and placed the hairpin in front of Wu Shumei. “Sorry, I borrowed your hairpin for a moment.”
Wu Shumei shuddered at the sight of the pin. She could still remember Ying Su using it to stab someone just now, and all she could think of was the blood it had been drenched in.
Shopkeeper Wu, however, smiled warmly. “Lady Shen, it’s been a while. I hope you’ve been well.”
Ying Su’s lips curved. “I have.”
Wu Shumei smiled gently. “Just now, Father told me he knew you, and it gave me quite a surprise. Sister Shen, we really are fated to meet!”
Ying Su smiled faintly. Seeing that Shopkeeper Wu wanted to continue chatting, she spoke first, “I still have matters to attend to today, so I’ll take my leave.” She gave Wu Shumei a smile, then turned and left.
Wu Shumei stared blankly after her dashing figure, then fumed, “Father, what’s with her? After eating all this food, she didn’t even bother with courtesy or pay a single coin before leaving.”
Shopkeeper Wu, however, knew Ying Su’s character well, she was never one to take a loss. He chuckled, “You must have told her the meal was free.”
Wu Shumei’s face flushed with reproach. “Father, why are you siding with her? Even if I said the meal was free, shouldn’t she at least have said something? How could she just walk off without a word?”
Seeing his daughter pout, Shopkeeper Wu only smiled at her lovingly.
