Bringing My Rival Back to Life (Accidentally) - Chapter 29
There seemed to be little difference between taking Wu Jiu in and not taking him in, at least that’s what Zhu Xiao thought—lying in bed at the moment, he was messaging Wu Jiu via the Yin-Yang Communicator.
…It was no different from usual.
Wu Jiu: [Zhu Xiao, are you asleep?]
Zhu Xiao: [Not yet.]
Wu Jiu: [Then let’s chat!]
Zhu Xiao questioned him: [You’re right here, why are we chatting via the Yin-Yang Communicator?]
They were just separated by a wall.
From this sentence, Wu Jiu inferred a hidden meaning: [What are you implying? Are you inviting me to your room?]
Zhu Xiao directly asked: [Are you coming or not?]
Wu Jiu almost typed “yes” into the chat box, but in the end, he restrained himself and said solemnly: [Zhu Xiao, we’re not married yet. We can’t share the same bed.]
Zhu Xiao: [Alright.]
Since Wu Jiu had spoken, Zhu Xiao showed respect. So he didn’t bring it up again, and as usual, they chatted via the communicator.
Wu Jiu was clearly very excited: [Zhu Xiao, this is my first time staying at your place.]
Zhu Xiao didn’t understand what he was so excited about. They each had their own room. What difference did it make if Wu Jiu slept in the next room or in his own?
With a poker face, Zhu Xiao replied: [Oh, and what are your thoughts?]
Wu Jiu did have some thoughts, and they couldn’t be summarized in a few words: [Zhu Xiao, it’s great staying at your place. You’re right next to me.]
He even asked: [Which side are you sleeping on?]
Zhu Xiao: [Left.]
Wu Jiu thought for a moment, then turned over to face the wall.
Wu Jiu: [Now we’re facing each other.]
After saying this, Wu Jiu felt a bit unsatisfied. With a wall between them, he felt it still wasn’t close enough.
Facing the wall, Wu Jiu’s mind raced, and he finally came up with a brilliant idea.
He tactfully said to Zhu Xiao: [Zhu Xiao, I’m a ghost. I won’t die if I don’t sleep all night.]
Zhu Xiao: [So?]
Wu Jiu: [Can I sit at your bedroom door and watch you sleep?]
Zhu Xiao: […]
Zhu Xiao: [Then come on over.]
With permission granted, Wu Jiu immediately got up, floated to Zhu Xiao’s bedroom door, and found an excellent spot with a great view to sit down.
Wu Jiu looked at Zhu Xiao’s bed, and Zhu Xiao was also glancing at him sideways.
After a brief eye contact, Wu Jiu excitedly messaged: [Zhu Xiao, I can see you!]
Seeing Zhu Xiao wasn’t anything special; what was special was that he could stay and see Zhu Xiao lying in bed.
Zhu Xiao: [Look up now.]
Wu Jiu obediently looked up.
Zhu Xiao threw a pillow at him, saying, [You can talk now.]
Wu Jiu almost got hit right on the nose. He caught the pillow Zhu Xiao threw and asked, [Aren’t you sleeping?]
Zhu Xiao made an “oh” sound and said, [Then you hold it in.]
Holding it in was definitely impossible. Wu Jiu couldn’t hold back for more than ten seconds before he started talking to Zhu Xiao.
[Let’s just talk then.]
Zhu Xiao glanced at the floor. Although it was clean, it was cold and hard, not a comfortable place to sit.
[Are you just going to sit like that?]
[Yeah.]
As a ghost, Wu Jiu floated above the floor like a maglev train, maintaining a slight distance and feeling no discomfort.
[What’s wrong with that?]
Zhu Xiao frowned, hesitated for a moment, then finally said three words: [Get up here.]
[That’s not good, Zhu Xiao,] Wu Jiu wanted to agree but still feigned reluctance, [You shouldn’t… We’re not married yet.]
Zhu Xiao repeated firmly, without any intention of negotiating: [Get up here.]
[Alright, Zhu Xiao, I understand your eagerness to share the bed with me,] Wu Jiu used his incredible willpower to resist the urge to climb up, [But I can’t just go up there casually… We’re not married yet.]
Zhu Xiao was too lazy to say it a third time. He wasn’t discussing with Wu Jiu; he only gave him two choices: [Either get up here or go back to the next room.]
Having only two options made it much simpler. Wu Jiu didn’t have much room to hesitate. After a few seconds, he quickly made his choice: [Okay, I’ll come up.]
He carefully floated to the other side of the bed, hesitated for a moment by the edge, then took a long, rectangular pillow from the side and placed it in the middle of the bed.
He insisted on his principle: [We’ll each stay on our side and not cross the line.]
[…]
[Alright.]
Zhu Xiao turned over, closed his eyes, and didn’t plan to continue the conversation: [I’m going to sleep.]
[Okay, you sleep. I won’t disturb you.]
While turning off his phone’s sound, Wu Jiu saw a message from Butler Bai via the Yin-Yang Communicator.
Butler Bai: [Young master, the master said that as long as you have a stable, long-term partner in the human world and engage in a wonderful union of body and soul with them, you can get a long-term visa for the human world.]
Wu Jiu: […]
It seemed that Wu Xingdong, on the other side, thought Butler Bai’s wording was too lengthy. After a while, he sent another message via Butler Bai’s phone.
Butler Bai: [It means just do it!!]
Butler Bai: [Go ahead and cuddle and kiss that handsome guy right now. Got it?]
Butler Bai: [Young master, the above message was from the master.]
Wu Jiu questioned: [Why are you suddenly meddling in this, old man? What does this have to do with you?]
The reply came instantly, with a rather intense tone: [It has everything to do with it, you brat! You don’t understand anything at all!!!]
Butler Bai: [Hurry up and settle down, and when you have time, bring him back to meet your mom. Got it?]
Butler Bai: [Stop wasting time on nonsense. If you have time for that, you should be cuddling and kissing already. You’re far worse than I expected.]
Butler Bai: [Young master, all the above messages were from the master.]
Without Butler Bai saying it, Wu Jiu knew that the tone was most likely from his hot-tempered father.
Wu Jiu: [Old man, you’re being too improper. Don’t teach me these indecent things.]
Wu Jiu: [I really don’t know how Mom ever liked you. If you keep saying these things, be careful I don’t tattle on you later.]
Wu Jiu: [Anyway, don’t interfere. I have my own plan.]
Wu Jiu knew that generally, with their rather superficial father-son relationship, Wu Xingdong wouldn’t interfere this much in his romantic affairs. The fact that Wu Xingdong was so anxious must mean that his mother had given strict orders.
Wu Jiu mercilessly ridiculed the old Yama: [You’re the one who’s far worse. You’re so anxious; could it be that your wife doesn’t let you into bed?]
At this moment, Wu Jiu lay comfortably on Zhu Xiao’s bed and sent a highly provocative message to Wu Xingdong: [Do you want to guess where I am right now?]
“Unfilial son! Unfilial son!!”
Down below, Wu Xingdong was furious and grabbed a stick, intending to go to the human world to teach his son a lesson. However, Butler Bai managed to talk him out of it with great difficulty.
Wu Jiu snorted, put away his phone, and ignored any further messages from Wu Xingdong. In his view, this matter was of great importance and had to be done on an auspicious day, preferably on their wedding night.
Even if he was about to disintegrate from staying too long in the human world, he couldn’t casually engage in a relationship with Zhu Xiao just to obtain a long-term, stable stay in the human world. That would be very irresponsible.
To avoid disturbing Zhu Xiao, Wu Jiu lay on the bed in a very proper posture, motionless like a corpse, making no sound at all.
Gradually, his thoughts drifted far away.
He began to consider writing Zhu Xiao into his fate contract—this way, Zhu Xiao would have a long life like him, and they could equally participate in every moment of each other’s lives.
However, this might be something that mortals would need to think about; not everyone would like such a binding commitment.
So he also began to think about proposing to Zhu Xiao. He wanted to lay bare all of himself to Zhu Xiao. If Zhu Xiao nodded, he would place the ring on Zhu Xiao’s finger.
He naturally began to think about the design of the ring. He hoped it would be in the shape of begonia flowers and leaves, symbolizing that he and Zhu Xiao would meet every day.
…
Wu Jiu was so engrossed in his thoughts that he didn’t even notice Zhu Xiao had been looking at him for a full minute.
Zhu Xiao had turned over at some point. He had thought Wu Jiu was asleep with his eyes closed, but when he turned, Wu Jiu’s eyes were wide open, his expression serious and thoughtful, lost in contemplation.
“Jiu.”
“What is it?” Wu Jiu snapped out of his reverie and looked at Zhu Xiao.
Then, in the darkness, Zhu Xiao broke the clear boundary in the middle of the bed.
Their lips and breaths intertwined in the darkness. Zhu Xiao kissed the corners of his lips, his Adam’s apple, and his collarbone, listening to the other’s breathing become rapid under his control.
“Hey, Zhu Xiao…”
But this initiative was fleeting. Zhu Xiao only briefly touched upon it.
Wu Jiu couldn’t bear the teasing. When Zhu Xiao didn’t continue, he grew anxious, grabbed Zhu Xiao’s wrist, and pinned him to the bed.
Zhu Xiao showed no intention of resistance. Both his hands were pinned by Wu Jiu to the side of his neck—a posture of complete surrender. In this situation, it seemed like a silent encouragement.
Even without the light on, he could guess the impatient look on Wu Jiu’s face.
Wu Jiu called his name: “Zhu Xiao…”
Zhu Xiao seemed unaware of his predicament, only asking, “Hmm, what is it?”
Wu Jiu leaned down— in that instant, many indecent thoughts flashed through his mind. He wanted to leave marks all over Zhu Xiao, wanted to hear Zhu Xiao’s voice become soft and even tremble, wanted to see him disheveled, no longer able to remain calm as he was now.
But he still didn’t do it.
“Zhu Xiao…” Wu Jiu said through gritted teeth, “You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?”
Zhu Xiao made an “Mm” sound and admitted it generously.
Then he picked up the long pillow again, placed it back in the middle, separating them, and said to Wu Jiu, “I’m really going to sleep now. Remember not to cross the line.”
Wu Jiu: […]
He watched helplessly as Zhu Xiao closed his eyes, with no way to react.
Zhu Xiao clearly knew he wouldn’t do anything, which was why he dared to tease him so carefreely and then fall asleep without a care in the world.
Wu Jiu was now wide awake.
After an unknown amount of time, he finally squeezed out a barely audible whisper: “Zhu Xiao, I really admire you…!”
…
Wu Jiu endured the entire night. The next morning, he hurried back to the underworld in a rush.
As soon as he returned, he began rummaging through everything, making the already chaotic Yama’s residence even messier after the old Yama’s disruption.
Butler Bai, seeing Wu Jiu so anxious that steam was practically coming off his head, couldn’t help but ask: “Young master, what are you looking for?”
“My household register.”
“Why do you need your household register?”
Wu Jiu straightened his expression and said resolutely: “I’m going to marry Zhu Xiao!”
