Chapter 6: Contact (Part 1)

***

The sun was shining brightly, and although it was only late spring, the indoor temperature already felt a bit hot.

All the curtains in the villa’s living room were tightly closed, and they dared not turn on the air conditioning. The two young women in the room had beads of sweat on their foreheads.

Xia Yan wore a light blue T-shirt on top and tight-fitting gray-black women’s jeans on the bottom, while Gu Yao wore a white T-shirt paired with denim overalls. Obviously, the clothing taste of the original wife and daughter of this family was not too flashy, and the sizes more or less fit.

After breakfast in the morning, Xia Yan and Gu Yao finally noticed that something was off. After showering, they were hungry again and only felt comfortable after eating two pots of noodles. The little-known fact that food intake increases greatly after becoming a vampire was personally experienced by the two.

After the meal, both of them leaned over the coffee table, staring intently at the map on the table, continuing their discussion.

“D City is mostly mountainous, except for a few main district and county urban areas, other places are sparsely populated. Now, our first consideration is that we must leave the DZ City area.”

Xia Yan used a pen to compare several highways and national roads, frowning slightly: “According to what you said, the Dark Arrow Unit has already started deploying checkpoints and surveillance on the main traffic routes, especially the main entry and exit routes in the mountainous areas, so we can’t take national roads or highways. We must traverse the blockade line on foot through the wilderness!”

“Brother, trekking through the mountainous wilderness, no matter which direction, we can’t get out in less than 3 to 5 days! We lack too much equipment. Moreover, some things are even harder to obtain in the wild…”

Gu Yao’s gaze darted to the refrigerator in the living room, which contained the last two bags of blood. She looked a bit nervous: “I didn’t think too much about it last night when I got this blood, and I don’t know how long it will last. Should I go get some more tonight?”

Xia Yan pondered for a moment, then slowly shook her head: “No, we can be sure that the township health center has already noticed the missing blood and reporting it to the police is inevitable. Now it’s broad daylight, and we can’t just waltz out of here. The residents around here all know each other very well, and strangers coming and going would easily arouse suspicion.”

“Then what do we do? We can’t take the national road, and we can’t trek through either! The probability of us being exposed is getting higher and higher!”

Gu Yao leaned back against the sofa edge in frustration, grabbing a cup and throwing her head back to drink large gulps of cold water to drive away the stuffiness in her body. The backward lean of her upper body inevitably stretched out her body curves.

Staring intently at Gu Yao’s current actions and posture, Xia Yan was a bit dazed.

“Brother… what are you looking at?”

Noticing Xia Yan’s strange behavior from the corner of her eye, Gu Yao also looked down at her chest, and her face actually got a little hot.

“Women… women… that’s right!”

Xia Yan seemed to have been distracted for a while, completely ignoring Gu Yao’s question, just slowly getting up and pacing back and forth in the living room.

Gu Yao quickly put down the water cup, looking confused.

“Nobody knows we’ve turned into this… as long as we’re careful to avoid thermal imaging surveillance cameras, what else do we have to worry about… hmm, tracking butterflies are too expensive and are one-time consumables, it’s even less likely they’d be used extensively along the entire blockade line.”

Xia Yan walked with her head slightly lowered, her left arm hugging her chest, her right elbow resting on her left wrist, forearm upward, fingers supporting her chin, her eyes getting brighter and brighter.

“Brother, do you mean… no one will recognize us as we are now, so we can just take the national road to leave?”

Gu Yao finally understood Xia Yan’s muttering and jumped up excitedly: “Then let’s do another job when we leave tonight! Get more blood.”

Turning back to look at the youthful, exuberant young woman, Xia Yan gave a wry smile: “Without constant temperature refrigeration, blood at room temperature won’t last long. Besides, don’t get addicted to stealing.”

“We’re already vampires, why care about being thieves…”

Gu Yao muttered in a low voice, and Xia Yan was also stunned, then fell silent.

Just as the atmosphere was getting low, suddenly from the direction of the small path outside the villa, the sound of a vehicle approaching could be heard, and it seemed to be heading straight for the villa.

Xia Yan’s expression changed, and she quickly flashed to the side of the floor-to-ceiling window, grabbing the curtain and lifting it slightly to peek outside.

A large electric tricycle with a cargo box, painted with familiar colors and markings, was a common express delivery vehicle. A middle-aged man with a full beard jumped down from the driver’s seat, looked up at the villa in front of him, and started shouting.

“Yang Ping’s family, come get your express delivery!”

“Is anyone home?”

“Did the whole family go out to play?”

After shouting several times with no response from the villa’s gate, the bearded man habitually spat, turned and walked towards the cargo box, intending to just pile the parcels at the door and leave without bothering to make a phone call to inform them.

This was all countryside folks here, and there were almost no cases of lost parcels. As the local rapid distribution delivery man, he was already used to this.

“Hm?”

As the bearded man turned, he puzzledly looked back, his gaze slowly fixing on the second-floor floor-to-ceiling window of that beautiful villa.

A faint, barely noticeable, and very unfamiliar pheromone entered the bearded man’s perceptual world. From that invisible, somewhat chaotic diffused information, the bearded man read some content.

“Two Thralls? Actually hiding in Yang Ping’s house? Interesting…”

The bearded man lit a cigarette, took a deep drag, spat again, and turned to get in the vehicle and leave.

In the villa’s living room, Xia Yan’s face looked slightly grave, while behind her, Gu Yao had already drawn her dagger and was crouching at the corner between the living room and the stairs, looking nervous.

For some unknown reason, Xia Yan seemed to sense a series of strange auras emanating from Gu Yao not far behind her, impacting her mental perception.

Like invisible waves, it was fluctuating and chaotic, with a hint of violence. As this mysterious aura permeated the living room, Gu Yao’s eyes seemed to be tinged with a faint red glow.

At the same moment, Xia Yan also felt her body temperature starting to rise abnormally.

“Xiao Yao, relax!”

Xia Yan suddenly walked over to Gu Yao’s side and crouched down, grabbing her shoulders with both hands, lowering her voice.

In her knowledge, the pheromone overflow and spread of a vampire in a boiling blood state would be dozens of times that of a normal state! The lower the level of the vampire, the harder it is to control the release of their own pheromones.

The intensity of the pheromones released by a Thrall-level vampire in a boiling blood state could be detected by tracking butterflies from several kilometers away!

Ah?! Shaken by Xia Yan, Gu Yao seemed to come to her senses, looking bewilderedly at the stairway leading to the first floor.

“Brother, what happened to me just now?”

“We unintentionally activated the vampire’s boiling blood because we were too nervous… I can sense your state! Adjust your breathing, calm your heart rate!”

Wiping the sweat from the back of her neck and bringing her fingers to her nose, a faint strange fragrance made Xia Yan’s brows slowly furrow.

“Oh… Brother, you seem to be the same… I can sense it too.”

Gu Yao quickly nodded, also imitating Xia Yan, wiping the fragrant sweat from the back of her neck and bringing it to her nose to smell, “That’s not right, it doesn’t seem to be the kind of smell you can pick up with your nose.”

The two newly turned vampires both adopted a silent mode after this small episode.
