Chapter 23: Unexpected Suffering
***
Night had fallen, and Jiang Yan didn’t know or care about any dissatisfaction among the late-night snack enthusiasts at the old street corner. She was currently busy changing Jiang Yao out of a nightgown soaked with sweat.
Faced with Jiang Yao’s body, smooth as jade, Jiang Yan felt an inexplicable nervousness and complex emotions, which persisted throughout the entire process of changing clothes. Without exerting much effort, Jiang Yan was already drenched in sweat.
The pale golden-haired girl in hibernation had fluctuating body temperature and pulse, naturally causing constant sweating, quite different from the stable deep sleep Jiang Yan experienced during her own hibernation.
What surprised Jiang Yan even more was that the intensity of the aura released by Jiang Yao was still climbing, having already reached the lower rank of Servant-level, with no signs of stopping!
Over a month ago, Jiang Yan had noticed that Jiang Yao’s blood thirst intervals were significantly shorter than her own. Even without using boiling blood, she needed to consume Jiang Yan’s blood every 3 to 4 days.
Wan Yue had once said that her blood was a luxurious treat for Jiang Yao. Perhaps this was why her growth was unexpectedly fast?
At this moment, Jiang Yao was like a bright lamp in the dark night. The flamboyance of her aura could probably be sensed by Knight-level vampires and above from a kilometer away!
Jiang Yan gritted her teeth and took out a small box from the medical constant temperature refrigerator. Inside were two small, crystal-clear external hormone inhibitors, which Wan Yue had specifically sent for Jiang Yao.
Perhaps she had anticipated this situation for Jiang Yao long ago.
One external hormone inhibitor could last about 24 hours. Although it was unclear when Jiang Yao would wake up, now was not the time to consider this issue. Jiang Yan raised her hand and injected it into the exposed thigh of the other.
The miraculous concoction from the underground world, with unknown ingredients, calmed down Jiang Yao’s pheromone release and aura intensity fluctuations in just a minute. An hour later, it had weakened to a negligible level.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door from the living room direction.
Jiang Yan frowned slightly, quietly gripping the dagger behind her back as she approached the door.
Outside, a familiar aura, it was Sister Tan. Just like when they met in the afternoon, she was still in a chaotic state of blood thirst, even more severe now.
It seemed that Jiang Yao’s previous aura intensity had exposed the location of the rented apartment, or perhaps their residence was never a secret to Sister Tan.
The door opened, and Sister Tan stood there with a feverish red and white complexion, her thin body even trembling slightly.
“Sister, can you get me some blood?” After a long while, Sister Tan finally raised her head, revealing an anxious expression.
Something was off. Wasn’t Sister Tan from an orthodox vampire family? How could she be short of blood? Jiang Yan frowned slightly, unconsciously touching the few strands of hair hanging by her ears, a new habit she had developed recently, appearing whenever she was deep in thought.
A few seconds later, Jiang Yan slowly nodded.
“How much do you have? I’ll pay!” As if grasping at a lifeline, Sister Tan actually grabbed Jiang Yan’s shoulders, her fingers pressing so hard that the latter inhaled sharply in pain.
Even without entering the boiling blood combat state, a vampire knight’s basic physical qualities and strength were incomparable to ordinary people.
“200ml packages, 2000 yuan each. I can have someone deliver them. If you need them urgently, I have a few bags at home. I’ll go get them!”
Jiang Yan didn’t intend to profit from her own channels, directly quoting the price Wan Yue had given her.
Although they had only met twice, Jiang Yan felt that settling within Sister Tan’s fief was the best choice for now.
Her true identity was a fief knight from an orthodox vampire family. As long as one didn’t violate taboos, she was indeed a very mild and easy-going person.
This could be deduced from the fact that Huang Gu had directly sent her here to settle down. Regardless of the reason for her sudden distress, being able to help was not a bad thing.
“Good! Thank you!” Sister Tan’s tense expression finally relaxed, and tears even appeared in the corners of her eyes.
Jiang Yan took out all four 200ml blood bags from the medical constant temperature refrigerator in the living room. This amount was enough for Jiang Yan herself to use for a month, but now it seemed it might not be enough for a knight inexplicably caught in blood thirst.
Seemingly having endured for a long time, Sister Tan snatched the blood bag almost before Jiang Yan’s hand had let go. In front of her, she bit open a gap with her mouth and gulped it down like a whale.
After drinking two bags consecutively, her complexion finally eased. Then she lowered her head, and a few tears fell to the ground.
“Sister Tan, come in and let’s talk.”
Pulling the vampire knight, who now resembled a lonely, weak woman, onto the sofa inside, perhaps influenced by the other’s current aura, Jiang Yan felt a hint of inexplicable gloom and sadness in her heart.
“Sister Tan, what’s really going on with you? How did you suddenly fall into such severe blood thirst? Doesn’t your family provide blood supply?”
At this moment, Jiang Yan no longer saw her as a high and mighty orthodox vampire fief knight, but more like an ordinary woman seeking comfort at her place after being wronged.
“I… I’m pregnant… I don’t know how I could be so careless… A few days ago, I lost control due to pregnancy blood thirst. My husband was blood invaded and didn’t make it… It’s my fault. I’ve been exposed. The family, they can’t disown me fast enough, how could they possibly help me…”
Sister Tan wiped her tears like a little woman, her body still trembling uncontrollably.
Jiang Yan’s pupils first contracted, then her whole body shuddered, goosebumps rising all over!
Back during training, Jiang Yan had stumbled upon some peripheral information about vampires, which included content about female vampires getting pregnant.
Although the chances of conception were low, it was possible for female vampires to get pregnant with normal humans. Once a female vampire becomes pregnant, her blood thirst intervals shorten to almost hourly, and the blood intake also increases linearly, continuing until childbirth!
Children born to female vampires and normal humans, if not 100%, at least have a 70-80% chance of being vampires. Moreover, the pregnant vampire would suffer a great loss in strength, requiring many years of recovery, and would likely stop growing.
Another reason that made Jiang Yan’s whole body cold was that she suddenly remembered female vampires also have the same menstrual cycle as normal women! During their periods, female vampires’ blood thirst intervals would also greatly shorten.
No wonder when she was trading with Zhao Peng last time and chose a month’s supply, only buying two extra bags for emergencies, Zhao Peng had a strange expression on his face that had puzzled her for a long time.
Whether she and Jiang Yao had truly become female vampires or some deeper level of monster was yet unknown. Just thinking about possibly entering a female menstrual period made Jiang Yan so embarrassed that she shivered, her pores trembling all over.
“Sister Tan, it’s past midnight now. Why don’t you wait outside my store, and I’ll bring you another batch of blood later! Please wait for me!”
Gritting her teeth, Jiang Yan still decided to lend a hand. At the very least, she and Jiang Yao must also prepare for the unexpected!
Sister Tan looked up gratefully, then pulled out a card from her pocket: “All these years, I’ve been living off the family’s benefits without any sense of urgency. I haven’t saved much money. There’s 500,000 yuan here, buy as much as you can with it.”
…
After Sister Tan temporarily left, Jiang Yan walked into the bedroom to check on the sleeping Jiang Yao, then took out her phone.
Zhao Peng’s dedication gave Jiang Yan a new understanding of Wan Yue’s capabilities. In less than half an hour, an SUV was parked downstairs. Zhao Peng was as polite as ever, and without wasting words, he got straight to the point.
This time, Jiang Yan bought blood worth 200,000 yuan in one go, emptying all the inventory Brother Zhao had brought this time, totaling 100 bags!
After briefly seeing Zhao Peng off, Jiang Yan took 50 bags of blood and headed towards the old street, which was already deserted.
Under the dim street lights, Sister Tan stood alone leaning against the roller shutter of the Lingzui’er shop, still looking lost.
Jiang Yan returned the bank card directly and stuffed the handbag containing the blood into Sister Tan’s hands: “Sister Tan, you’d better leave here quickly, or you’ll be discovered by the Dark Arrow Unit.”
Sister Tan silently looked at the handbag in her hand without answering, just wiping tears from the corners of her eyes with her fingers.
Jiang Yan wasn’t good at comforting people, especially women. She just squeezed the other’s arm to show comfort before turning to leave.
