Sister? She had another sister? “How did our sister end up in Fengcheng?” Fu Manman hesitated to ask. She hadn’t inherited the original host’s memories and had no recollection of this sister.

Fu An looked at Fu Manman curiously. How could his sister have forgotten? She was the one who sold their sister.
But then he remembered that his sister often forgot things. Her mind had never been quite right.

“For a steamed bun,” Fu An pouted, his face full of indignation, “You sold our sister for a steamed bun.”

What! Sold their sister for a single steamed bun?
This older sister was truly despicable. Fu Manman silently cursed the original host in her heart, then said to Fu An and Fu Qiang, “This is all my fault. Before, my mind wasn’t right; I had lost my senses. That’s why I sold our sister. I will definitely find her and bring her back.”

A look of joy spread across Fu An’s face, “Sis, are you serious?”

“Of course I am,” Fu Manman said with a tight smile.

Fu Qiang remained silent. He didn’t believe Fu Manman’s words. He never believed anything a mad person said.

It was getting late. Ominous black clouds pressed down overhead, and the weather looked like it could break into rain at any second.

The three of them quickly gathered their few belongings and continued their journey.

They absolutely had to find a place to rest before nightfall.

They walked for a long time. The sky gradually darkened, and a north wind howled, the sound of it rustling through the tough grass filling their ears.

At night, the temperature plummeted. Fu Manman felt she was about to freeze solid. If they didn’t find shelter from the wind soon, they would freeze to death.

“Achoo…” Fu An had been sneezing incessantly the whole way.

Is this kid going to catch a cold?!

Fu Manman grew anxious. In these circumstances, whether a child could survive a cold was a matter of pure luck.

She had no idea how they had managed to get through the nights before.

“Lights up ahead,” Fu Qiang suddenly called out, his voice tinged with excitement.

“Lights? Where?” Fu An stretched his neck, asking with eager urgency, before sneezing again.

Fu Manman squinted. She could vaguely make out a glimmer of light in the distance. It was too far away; they needed to get closer.

The closer they got, the clearer it became: there was a dilapidated building ahead. It looked like a rundown temple.

“Wait. Let’s not go straight in. We need to see who’s inside first,” Fu Qiang stopped in his tracks.

Fu Manman glanced at her younger brother, impressed. He was young, but shrewd and highly vigilant.

In these chaotic times, it was best to be cautious.

“I’ll go check it out. You two wait here,” Fu Qiang whispered, then crouched low and crept toward the broken temple.

Fu Manman held the swaddled baby tightly in her arms. The little one hadn’t cried the entire journey and felt quite warm against her chest.

Fu An crouched on the ground, covering his mouth and nose with his hands, breathing heavily to warm them. He suppressed several sneezes.

After a while, Fu Qiang returned, this time walking upright.

“It’s just ordinary folks inside the temple. About a dozen of them. From their accents, they sound like they’re from the north.”

“Then let’s hurry over!” Hearing Fu Qiang’s assessment that the people didn’t seem dangerous, Fu Manman felt relieved.

They moved immediately. Fu Qiang and Fu An pulled their meager luggage, and the three of them headed for the temple.

Inside the rundown temple, a group of people from the same village in Liujia Manor huddled together in family clusters. A few fires crackled here and there.

Some were cooking food, some chatting idly, and one was even scolding a child.

When the three Fu siblings appeared at the temple entrance, every eye turned toward them.

Under the collective gaze, Fu Manman walked into the temple without a flicker of expression. She and her two brothers found a spot sheltered from the wind and began to lay out their bedding.

After walking all day, they were exhausted. Being able to sit down and rest in this broken temple felt like a rare luxury.

No sooner had they settled than a tall, gaunt, middle-aged man with a dark complexion approached. He had a thick beard and a fierce glint in his eyes. He looked the three of them over, his gaze finally settling on their bundles.

“Who said you could come in? This is our spot,” the man growled menacingly.
