Fu Qiang stared at the bowl of rice porridge in his hands, recalling Fu Manman’s earlier taunt about him being a freeloader.

His grip tightened around the bowl as he shot a sideways glance at Fu Manman. Why isn’t she yelling at him now?

Better eat quickly before she notices.

His stomach growled fiercely—hunger was a merciless foe. If he didn’t fill his belly, how could he defend himself when Fu Manman next lost her temper?

With that thought, he drank the porridge without hesitation. The moment the warm liquid touched his tongue, he nearly choked—there were actual grains of rice in it!

After months of fleeing famine, this was the first time he’d tasted so much rice. The realization almost brought tears to his eyes.

“So good… Wuwu… If only Little Sister were here too.” Fu An’s voice trembled with longing. “Do you think Shuangshuang has any porridge to drink?”

At the mention of Fu Shuangshuang, both Fu An and Fu Qiang instinctively turned to glare at Fu Manman.

She sold their sister for a single steamed bun.

Fu An set down his bowl, his chest tight with resentment. No matter how much he tried to forgive, that anger toward his elder sister still simmered.

“Second Brother… if we go south, can we find her?” Fu An whispered. He remembered the trafficker saying they were heading south.

“Mn. South leads to Feng City. That’s where Shuangshuang must’ve been taken.” Fu Qiang’s voice was firm.

Once we reach Feng City… His plans were clear:

  1. Find Shuangshuang.
  2. Retrieve his token.
  3. Ensure the Fu siblings were settled safely.
  4. Leave.

Yesterday’s chaos had knocked him unconscious—but that blow to the head had also restored his memories.

He wasn’t a Fu by blood.

Uncle Fu had saved him from a pile of corpses during the famine, naming him “Fu Qiang” and raising him as his own when he’d been too injured to remember his past. In return, he’d treated the Fu siblings as family.

Except for Fu Manman.

The madwoman had stolen his food, beaten him, called him a bastard, and snatched the only clue to his real identity.

Now that he remembered who he was, there was no reason to stay.

But Uncle Fu’s kindness demanded repayment. With the man gone, the least he could do was ensure Fu An and the baby reached Feng City safely—and rescue Shuangshuang.

As for Fu Manman?

A rabid dog like her will only get them killed.

His fingers curled into fists.

I’ll have to eliminate her first.

Her demonic strength knew no bounds.

Since Uncle Fu passed away, no living soul could restrain her. When the madness took hold, she became a force of nature – Fu Qiang and Fu An had narrowly escaped being strangled to death on multiple occasions, surviving only through desperate pleas for mercy. But who could guarantee her restraint in the days to come?

If eliminating Fu Manman means protecting the others… surely Uncle Fu would not blame him.

Yet at this very moment, a scene of unexpected tenderness unfolded. Fu Manman cradled Little Maodan with uncharacteristic gentleness, carefully spooning rice broth between the infant’s eager lips. The starving baby drank with desperate urgency, his tiny pink tongue lapping at each spoonful like a newborn kitten.

Such heartbreaking vulnerability.

The more she witnessed this fragile life clinging to existence, the more determined she became. She would move mountains to keep this child alive.

After the baby drifted into satiated sleep, she passed the bundled infant to Fu An and turned to her own meager portion. The watery broth could barely be called porridge – its surface mirrored her exhausted face with cruel clarity. Yet she had to admire Fu An’s resourcefulness in stretching their pitiful supplies.

Attempting conversation, she found her brothers like stone statues – their averted eyes and clenched jaws speaking volumes where words would not.

Have I become their common enemy?

The realization struck like cold water.

Of course… my past atrocities have left wounds no apology can mend.

She exhaled slowly. Time alone could rebuild what madness had shattered. The road to redemption would be long, but she would walk on it patiently.

“Where does the southern road lead?” she asked, gazing at the desolate horizon where endless grasslands whispered under the mournful wind – not a single grazing beast in sight, only nature’s indifferent expanse.

“T-to Feng City,” Fu An stammered, his entire body tensing for expected violence. “We’re… going to find Shuangshuang.”

The unspoken accusation hung thick between them:

You sold our sweet sister – the apple of our parents’ eye – for a beggar’s ransom.

While she wept, your name.

Fu An trembled like an aspen leaf, his subconscious already recoiling from phantom blows.
