Blessed Girl From a Farm Family: Surviving the Famine With Space - Chapter 31
This cave wasn’t as deep as the one they’d found before. It was quite shallow, and the wind easily whistled inside. There were no dry branches in the cave; the dead wood outside had been soaked by the rain. When they managed to light a fire in the cave, it produced mostly smoke.
So, tonight would be a cold one.
Even with cotton-padded quilts, the wind made it hard to stay warm.
Regardless, the first task was to go find some dry leaves and grass to spread out for sleeping.
Fu Manman called Fu An to go with her to gather dry leaves, leaving Little Maodan and the tiger cub with Fu Qiang.
She also wanted to test how to control her superhuman strength.
Once in the woods, she found a tree to experiment on. If Lu Zhishen could uproot a willow tree, she should be able to manage it too!
Fu Manman first found a smaller tree to try. She could wrap her arms around it. She exerted force, and the tree, roots and all, was pulled straight out of the ground.
Seeing the uprooted tree, she was ecstatic. She had only used about a third of her strength just now. If she used more force, she could pull out an even thicker tree.
To test her limits, she found a tree so thick it required both arms to encircle it. This tree was massive, probably at least fifty years old.
She hugged the trunk, planted her feet firmly, took a deep breath, and began to pull.
The tree’s roots ran deep, making it extremely difficult to uproot. Fu Manman strained with all her might, managing only to partially loosen the roots from the earth. Even so, it was an incredible feat.
Her strength had shaken such a stout tree—a far more difficult task than kicking a tiger to death.
Incredible! Her strength was truly immense, like a natural-born superpower! Who would have thought her slender arms and legs held such power? Such contrasting cuteness!
Fu Manman was delighted. She also felt she was grasping how to control her strength. Whenever she needed to exert force, she took a deep breath, sank her qi to her dantian, and then released her power—that was the key to great strength.
Meanwhile, Fu An, following Fu Manman’s instructions, gathered relatively dry grass and leaves, filling a basket to the brim.
The two returned to the cave. From a distance, they could hear voices inside.
“What a coincidence, meeting again! It must be fate.”
Who was that? She hurried into the cave, prepared to act according to the situation.
But upon entering and seeing the familiar faces, she was momentarily stunned. Then, breaking into a wide smile, she said, “Uncle Chang, Aunt Luhua! Is that you?”
“Yes! What a tremendous coincidence! We were afraid leaving the woods now might mean running into enemy troops, so we decided to stay an extra day. We were just looking for a place to shelter from wild animals when we found this spot and ran into you again!” Chang Zhong was overjoyed.
Although they had parted ways earlier, he thought the children had already left the woods. He hadn’t expected them to still be here.
Then again, this young lady was strong and unafraid of wild beasts.
“Since we’ve met again, it’s fate,” Fu Manman said happily.
At the same time, she discreetly glanced at the items she hadn’t put away.
They were now covered with clothes, presumably Fu Qiang’s doing.
“Would it be alright if we stayed here with you tonight? It’s a bit cramped,” Luhua still wanted to seek Miss Manman’s opinion.
After all, the children had found this place first.
“Of course, why wouldn’t it be? It’s good; we can look out for each other,” Fu Manman agreed readily.
The Chang Zhong family seemed honest and kind. She thought travelling together from now on might be a good idea.
Besides, it gave a plausible origin for all her belongings now.
…
Delighted by Fu Manman’s agreement, the family happily unpacked. The three children trailed behind Luhua, clamoring for meat.
“Luhua, put San Ya down and come prepare the meat. I’ll go fetch some water.”
“Uncle Chang, you can use this fire!” Fu Manman pointed to the fire pit they had started earlier.
Chang Zhong expressed his thanks, then took his family’s iron pot to fetch water.
Chang Zhong’s wife deftly began cutting the meat. When Chang Zhong returned with water, she put the sliced meat into the pot, then took a small cloth pouch and pinched a bit of greyish-white powder into it.
Chang Zhong then set the pot over the fire to stew the meat.
