This is only the beginning. There will be even more shocking things in the future. If she can’t handle it now, how will she survive later?

“Sis, I’m scared!” Fu An hugged his bowl and sat close to Fu Manman.

Fu Manman appeared calm on the surface, but she was actually trembling inside.

When Fu An suddenly said he was scared, she shivered slightly before steadying herself. She said to Fu An, “Sit a little closer. Don’t be afraid. We’ll leave as soon as the rain stops.”

Given the current situation, she felt it would be better for the four siblings to flee alone. As long as she could access her space again to get some food, she would find a way for everyone to survive this harsh winter. Then, once they found a place with clear waters and green mountains, they could build a house, clear land for farming, and life would eventually get better.

Fu Manman was already painting a beautiful blueprint in her mind.

Fu An nodded after hearing her words, feeling less afraid. It was strange—his older sister had never let him get close before or comforted him.

But today, his older sister seemed so warm.

Fu An felt a warmth in his heart. He looked toward the cave entrance, waiting for the rain to stop so they could leave.

Fu Qiang sat in the corner, coldly observing the people around him, especially two cowering figures in the shadows who looked familiar—probably from the old clan leader’s side.

There were also three others who had been eyeing the four siblings since entering the cave.

These three had red eyes, dark circles, and fierce expressions—clear signs they had resorted to cannibalism.

No matter what, they cannot continue fleeing with this group.

Otherwise, one day, the weakest among them would end up as food for these people.

The rain finally stopped in the afternoon. After it cleared, the clouds parted, and cold sunlight filtered through the sparse, bare branches.

“The rain stopped! Great!”

Cheers erupted in the cave. Someone suggested, “Why don’t we search the nearby woods for any wild fruits we can eat?”

“I’ll go with you,” San Ya’s father offered.

He needed to find food for his three children.

“We can’t go out. There are wild beasts in these woods—they eat people,” an elder warned.

“Yeah, none of us have ever seen mountains or been up here before. We heard from the village scholar that mountains are full of fierce animals—wolves, tigers… Tigers can swallow a person whole!” a man in his forties or fifties said fearfully.

Everyone murmured in agreement.

Most of the people fleeing here were from flat plains where there were no mountains. To them, deep forests were mysterious and terrifying.

They had only come into the mountains to escape the enemy Tartar soldiers.

Now, they were lost in the woods with no idea how to get out.

The few who had wanted to venture out were too scared to leave after hearing the warnings.

But while they stayed, the four Fu siblings prepared to leave.

Fu Manman carried the little Maodan in one arm and held the black bundle with the other. Fu An and Fu Qiang dragged the quilt wrapped in black cloth. The three of them headed for the cave entrance.

“Why are you still going out?” the kind man called out to them.

Fu An replied, “Uncle, we need to hurry to Fengcheng to find our little sister.”

“It’s too dangerous for you siblings to go out alone. You should travel with us!” the man urged earnestly.

“No, we’ll go on our own,” Fu Qiang said tersely, pulling Fu An along as they walked out.

Fu Manman smiled at the kind man. “Uncle, thank you for your kindness.”

The man nodded and didn’t try to stop them further.

In these times, who could afford to look out for others?

These children would have to rely on their own fate.

Shortly after the Fu siblings left, Liu Si and four young men followed them out. Two of them whispered to Liu Si.
