“There’s a cave up ahead!”

“Great, we can take shelter from the rain in the cave.”

Soon, a group of drenched people rushed into the cave, bringing with them a chill dampness.

The moment they entered, they spotted the fire and the few children inside.

Among the crowd, several burly men’s eyes gleamed with greed. Only a few children, no adults! Didn’t that mean they were easy prey?

In these times, when people were starving, they would dare to eat anything.

During chaotic eras, cannibalism was not uncommon.

Fu Qiang keenly sensed those dangerous gazes—the bloodshot eyes filled with murderous intent. He thought to himself that it was a mistake to assume they were safe as long as they weren’t Dazi soldiers.

He never expected that in this chaotic world, people driven mad by hunger could be just as dangerous.

“So it’s you four siblings!” A man stepped out from the crowd, looking at the Fu siblings with ill intentions.

Liu Si! This man hadn’t been shot to death by stray arrows and had instead joined up with others.

“You know them?” one of the burly men asked Liu Si.

Liu Si stroked the beard on his chin and sneered, “No, but I’ve heard the girl is quite something. Everyone, be careful!”

As he spoke, his eyes fell on the bundles behind the four siblings. Good heavens! Those bundles were even larger than yesterday’s.

There must be something good inside.

“Just a few kids, what’s there to be afraid of? Tch…” Several young, strong men scoffed. These children would be as easy to crush as ants.

“Hey, see those big bundles? There must be something good inside,” Liu Si said to the burly men.

With a few exchanged glances, they all understood each other’s intentions.

Fu Manman thought, if they dared to come forward, she would punch them one by one and finish them off.

Fu An also noticed the men’s gazes and was so frightened that he clutched his bowl with one hand and gripped the vine tying the quilt with the other. If these people discovered their belongings, they would surely rob them, and then the cotton quilt would be lost.

“Hey! Over here, come sit with us!” Suddenly, a square-faced, tall man in the crowd waved to the Fu siblings.

Fu Manman saw that the man was accompanied by a kind-faced woman. Her hair was disheveled, her face dusty, and she held a three- or four-year-old girl in her arms. Two identical-looking boys, about six or seven years old, stood beside her.

When the man spoke, the several young men averted their eyes.

It seemed this man was someone formidable, and the young men were afraid of him.

Fu Manman signaled to Fu Qiang and Fu An with her eyes, and the three of them moved over.

After sitting down near the man, he looked at the three of them with pity, sighed softly, and asked gently, “Where are your parents?”

“Our parents are both gone,” Fu An whispered, his voice choked.

The man sighed, “Heaven is unkind, and the people suffer! First famine, then war—when will it ever end?”

Fu Manman glanced at the man. Someone who could say such things must be somewhat educated, and judging by his demeanour, he seemed like a martial artist.

“Mom, my tummy hurts,” the little girl nestled in the woman’s arms whimpered.

The woman patted the child and set her down on the ground, “Play with your brothers. Mom will make some food.”

The woman took out a small bag and poured out a mixture of grass roots and tree bark powder. She put these into a pot, added water, and brought it to a boil.

Once ready, she filled a bowl and handed it to the man, “Here, eat.”

“Alright,” the man replied, taking the bowl. But he didn’t eat. Instead, he glanced at the four siblings beside him and offered them the bowl. “Here, share this among yourselves.”

Fu Manman was surprised. This man was truly a good person.
