As for other food, it was even harder to find. Roots and tubers underground weren’t easy to come by, and wild fruits on trees—many were inedible. Finding something edible was purely a matter of luck.
She had walked quite a distance without spotting any edible wild fruits.
There were plenty of wild trees and dried grasses, but not a living insect in sight.
Fu Manman dragged her luggage along, clutching the child, exhausted to the bone.
She wondered if there were others in these woods. Should she call out, try to find someone to join?
But then she thought of her belongings and the nursing baby in her arms, and she gave up the idea.
Anyone in these woods now would be refugees, starving, eyes gleaming with hunger. If they saw her alone, they would surely rob her. With Little Maodan in her arms, dealing with people would be too troublesome.
The thought made her even more cautious.
“Sis…”
“Sister…”
In the woods, two boys, shivering with cold, their faces bluish, dressed in tattered clothes like skinny bean sprouts, were shouting at the top of their lungs.
“Sis… where are you?” Fu An’s eyes were red, tears dripping down.
He had run out of the cave early in the morning to search for his sister.
Yesterday evening, while fleeing from the Tatars, everyone had scattered into the woods, and he had gotten separated from his sister.
“Second Brother, do you think Sister and Little Brother are still alive?” Fu An asked tearfully, looking at Fu Qiang beside him.
Fu Qiang’s face was tense, his beautiful phoenix eyes deep and somber. He glanced around, thinking that even if Fu Manman were dead, he had to find her.
That very important token was on her. He hadn’t been able to find it; where had she hidden it?
Such a malicious woman—how did she deserve to be called “sister” by these younger siblings?
Shuangshuang was so kind and gentle, yet she sold her for a steamed bun.
She even forced Fu An to steal an old man’s rations.
All along this journey of escape, ever since Uncle Fu died, their food supplies had mostly been eaten by this Fu Manman. He and Fu An could only eat tree bark.
Although she seemed much more normal now, he still hadn’t given up the thought of killing her.
After they got separated yesterday, they encountered wolves. Fortunately, they were lucky enough to find a cave and hid there overnight.
He didn’t know if Fu Manman had been that fortunate.
The mountains were full of fierce beasts—the possibility of being eaten by wild animals was quite high.
It was just a pity for the infant still in swaddling clothes.
He had promised Old Man Fu that he would take care of these siblings and lead them to the county town. After all, the old man had saved his life.
But now…
He looked at Fu An beside him.
In this chaotic world, if he could preserve just one bloodline of Old Man Fu’s, he would have done right by him.
“Second Brother, aren’t you worried about Sister at all?” Fu An asked Fu Qiang.
This brother had been rescued by Father from a pile of corpses along the way. At the time, he remembered nothing, so Father gave him the name Fu Qiang.
Said he had a great fortune and tenacious vitality.
Since he was taller than him, Father made him the older brother, so he became the second child in the family, and Fu An became the third.
Although at first, Fu An hadn’t accepted it—having to be the younger brother just because of height.
But these past few days, he felt that Fu Qiang was indeed a reliable older brother, more dependable than their eldest sister. If it weren’t for Big Brother scavenging for food everywhere along the way, they might have starved to death long ago.
It was just a shame that their younger sister had still been sold by Eldest Sister.
Whenever he thought of his sister, his heart ached.
He hated Eldest Sister, but the thought that she might have been eaten by wolves also frightened and saddened him.
“Will worrying help us find her? She sold Shuangshuang—don’t you hate her?”
Fu Qiang’s words immediately shut Fu An up.
This Second Brother always spoke so coldly, leaving no room for reply.
