Apocalypse Survival Guide for a Beta [GB] - Chapter 50
Lin Bai confirmed Chang Ping’s death and then turned around, her gaze meeting Lou Tiannan’s who was not far away.
She met Lou Tiannan’s eyes with a calm, expressionless face but inwardly, she thought, ‘Uh-oh, he heard that.’
Still, she wasn’t nervous. Lou Tiannan didn’t know Chang Ping and with Chang Qi dead, no one else was aware of what had happened three months ago. Every other witness was already dead, except her.
Deceiving Lou Tiannan would be easy.
Besides, Lou Tiannan had no time to question her now. After glancing at her briefly, he turned to deal with Qiu Tu in front of him.
She watched Qiu Tu exchange blows with Lou Tiannan, observing the deep red and purple flames surrounding him. His fire was completely different from Lou Tiannan’s. From its glow and temperature, she could tell that his ability was at least on par with Lou Tiannan’s.
Why wasn’t his energy dispersing into ability particles?
“I really want to take you apart and examine your body structure,” Bai Chuan murmured in awe, suddenly appearing beside her.
He had just watched Lin Bai’s entire fight with Chang Ping. Her limbs moved with almost inhuman agility—no, more than inhuman, beyond what even a normal person could achieve. He had always known his boss had a deep knowledge of androids but Lin Bai was the most lifelike android he had ever seen.
“If you say one more word, you’ll end up like the one lying on the ground,” Lin Bai said flatly.
Bai Chuan wisely shut his mouth. The battle in the field had reached its peak.
Although Lou Tiannan and Elena were fighting two against one, it was clear to any observer that they weren’t gaining the upper hand.
Meanwhile, on the open ground, Qiu Tu’s subordinates had already surrounded Zhou Yu’s group. It was only a matter of time before they were taken down.
Tang Mary, watching from the sidelines, frowned deeply. She knew Qiu Tu’s forces were powerful but her own reinforcements were still on their way. Lou Tiannan’s people looked like they wouldn’t hold out much longer.
Silently calculating her own plans to reap the benefits, Tang Mary decided this wasn’t good. She couldn’t let Qiu Tu gain the advantage just yet.
So, hoisting her spiked club, she jumped into the fight.
With Tang Mary’s intervention, the pressure on Zhou Yu and Song Yan lessened significantly.
Boom!
Elena was struck by a powerful punch from Qiu Tu, the impact slamming her to the ground. A crushing force squeezed her abdomen and forced a mouthful of blood up her throat. She coughed, spraying crimson onto the dirt.
“A so-called adjudicator and this is all you amount to?” Qiu Tu sneered, looking down at the fallen Elena. As he spoke, a flame shot from his palm and hurtled straight for her head.
Elena rolled to the side just in time, narrowly avoiding the attack.
Qiu Tu smirked coldly and lunged forward, his flaming fist swinging down toward her.
But before the punch could land, it abruptly froze mid-air.
A layer of ice had spread over his arm. Qiu Tu’s eyes narrowed but he forced his fist downward anyway.
Elena raised her own fist to block but with her injured abdomen, she couldn’t muster enough strength to counter his power.
The impact sent her staggering back dozens of steps before she barely managed to stabilize herself.
Qiu Tu’s eyes glowed with manic excitement as he looked at Elena, her face smeared with blood.
“Beg me for mercy, Adjudicator!”
He lunged at her again but Lou Tiannan intercepted him with a swift kick, breaking his attack.
The two men clashed, fists and palms striking with explosive force, each move targeting the other’s vital points. Between their blows, black and purple flames clashed and scorched anything they touched. Clothes ignited and fabric turned to charred remnants.
For every punch that landed on Lou Tiannan’s face, a kick struck Qiu Tu’s chest, yet neither gained the upper hand.
Qiu Tu’s eyes glinted viciously. He shifted his stance, transforming his palm into a claw, swiftly closing the distance between them. His movements were incredibly fast but Lou Tiannan’s reflexes matched him. Fire met fire and yet again—
Boom!
An explosion erupted.
This time, however, Lou Tiannan’s palm was bleeding.
His gaze turned icy as he looked at Qiu Tu, whose lips curled into a smirk. Raising his fist slightly, he let the sunlight glint off his hand.
A metallic sheen flashed.
It was… a metal-based ability.
“Qiu Tu has a dual ability?” Bai Chuan and Tang Mary exclaimed in shock.
Everyone else’s expressions darkened.
No one had expected Qiu Tu to be a dual-ability user.
Tang Mary’s heart sank.
She had planned to be the fisherman reaping the spoils.
But at the rate things were going, she was more likely to become cannon fodder.
“Bai Chuan! Let’s go together!” Tang Mary called out.
Bai Chuan’s expression turned serious. Facing a dual-ability user as powerful as Qiu Tu, they had no choice but to work together.
But Qiu Tu didn’t take them seriously at all. He knew better than anyone how strong his own abilities were. None of his opponents could defeat him.
Lou Tiannan, Tang Mary, and Bai Chuan launched a combined attack but Qiu Tu sneered in contempt. His left hand burned with deep red and purple flames, while his right hand wielded a silver-white metal blade. Even as he faced their siege, he showed no signs of struggling.
Lin Bai’s eyes tracked Qiu Tu’s movements, her mind rapidly analyzing his attack patterns and angles, searching for a weakness. But there was none. His dual abilities and immense energy covered any gaps in his technique.
Simply put, the three of them couldn’t defeat him.
“There are zombies!”
Lin Bai’s ears twitched at the shout. She turned toward the voice and saw scattered zombies appearing around them. They all seemed low-level but she didn’t believe it was that simple. Her gaze followed the direction the zombies were coming from.
At the blurred boundary of Eastern District One, something was moving toward them. With her exceptional vision, she spotted red-eyed zombies in the front ranks.
She glanced at the blood on the ground from the fallen ability users and immediately understood why the zombies were there.
The blood and flesh of ability users were highly attractive to zombies. The sheer concentration of blood in the area was drawing them in.
Three minutes later, everyone, except for the four fighters locked in their deadly battle, realized the zombie horde was coming.
Their presence made the battle even more chaotic.
Song Yan pushed Wen Xiaxia and Lu Jia toward Zhou Yu. “Get to the Yuguan Building over there! Find cover so we can fight properly!”
“What about you?” Zhou Yu shouted.
“Wait for me to come to you. Don’t worry, I can handle it!” Song Yan raised her arm to block an attack from the Blood Bone members. Without looking back, she ordered, “Go, now!”
Zhou Yu and the others hesitated no longer. Every second they delayed, the risk Song Yan faced increased.
Once inside the building, they quickly found cover and set up a defensive line. Finally, they regained some advantage, no longer being completely overwhelmed.
Lu Jia looked at the distance between them and Song Yan. “I’ll try to pull Sister Yan over.”
Zhou Yu shook his head. “Too risky. You’d expose our position. Stay here and cover me. I’ll go get her.”
Among them, Zhou Yu had the highest ability level, so he had the best chance of success.
Zhu Liang said, “I’ll cover you.”
“Alright!” Zhou Yu nodded.
Before Zhou Yu left, Zhu Liang quickly found a sniper position and got into place, while Wen Xiaxia prepared a smoke grenade. As Zhou Yu moved, Zhu Liang took out any threats around him and Wen Xiaxia threw the smoke grenade for cover.
By now, the zombie horde had completely surrounded the area, forcing many of the Blood Bone ability users to shift their focus to dealing with the undead.
Zhou Yu successfully brought Song Yan back to the Yuguan Building. As soon as she arrived, she asked, “Did anyone see Xi Ya and Lin Bai?”
“I saw Xi Ya run into the building,” Wen Xiaxia replied while fending off an approaching zombie. “Lin Bai was in the open area to the west just now but I don’t know where she is now. She should be able to take care of herself. The real worry is Xi Ya.”
Everyone had seen Lin Bai’s combat skills. Most people wouldn’t stand a chance against her but Xi Ya was different.
“I’ll go look for her!” Zhou Yu said, standing up.
“I’m here,” Xi Ya’s small voice called out.
They could hear her but couldn’t see her. Only when she spoke again did they finally spot her. She had hidden herself inside a drainage pipe. The drainage system in the Yuguan Building was designed to blend seamlessly with the flooring, making it nearly impossible to notice at first glance.
It was a safe hiding spot for Xi Ya, so Song Yan told her, “Stay there and don’t make a sound.”
“Is my mom safe?” Xi Ya asked anxiously.
“Did you forget how strong your mom is? Just stay hidden. She’ll probably be here soon.”
Xi Ya nodded and slowly withdrew back into the pipe. She remembered what her mother had told her. Staying out of danger was the best way to help.
She was still too weak. Huddled inside the drainage pipe, Xi Ya lowered her head in frustration.
Meanwhile, zombies and Blood Bone ability users were pouring into the Yuguan Building. Many were injured and their heavy scent of blood drew even more undead. But with the five of them working together, their coordinated defense held strong, creating a barrier that wasn’t easy to break through.
In the open area outside, one spot stood out where an invisible boundary formed around the intense battle between Qiu Tu, Lou Tiannan, and the others. Any zombie that got too close was either burned to a crisp by the flames or had its skull shattered by a spiked club.
Elena, having recovered slightly, rejoined the fight.
Hiding behind two corpses for cover, Lin Bai observed the battle, her eyes recording every movement like a camera. She had to admit that Lou Tiannan was strong. But Qiu Tu was even stronger. Despite fighting four opponents, his dual abilities allowed him to handle the situation with ease.
Tang Mary’s metal ability was more strength-oriented. Elena’s ice ability was at a disadvantage against Qiu Tu. Lou Tiannan’s fire ability was a level stronger than Qiu Tu’s but his energy reserves weren’t as abundant. Then there was Bai Chuan.
Over the past few days, Lin Bai hadn’t been able to figure out what ability Bai Chuan had. But now, during the battle, she finally saw it. It was wind.
Just like Lisa’s, a rare ability outside the traditional elemental categories.
Bai Chuan’s wind ability was one of the key reasons they were able to hold their ground against Qiu Tu. He knew how to leverage his strengths, working seamlessly with Lou Tiannan.
But it still wasn’t enough.
After watching for over ten minutes, Lin Bai reached the conclusion that those four couldn’t defeat Qiu Tu.
Her mind rapidly formulated multiple strategies; abandoning Lou Tiannan and the others to escape, assisting them in attacking Qiu Tu, or staying hidden and waiting for an opportunity.
But none of those were the best option.
Right now, there was no way she could go up and help Lou Tiannan and the others. Doing so would be a death sentence and would also expose her. Lin Bai’s eyes carefully observed every movement on the battlefield, trying to find a way to break the deadlock.
After only a few minutes, she suddenly noticed something strange. Qiu Tu’s attacks had changed. From reckless flying kicks and sweeping strikes, he had suddenly become more defensive and even retreated as he fought.
Why?
Just as she was trying to figure it out, a loud explosion shook the open area.
Even hidden beneath the corpses, Lin Bai could feel the wave of heat above her.
That was…
“Everyone, drop your weapons and stop using abilities! Otherwise, the next one we drop will be a biochemical bomb!”
