“If anything happens, just call me,” said the supervising honors student, then left Ed and the other honors student candidates.

The moment he turned the corner in the hallway and disappeared from sight—

“Ugh, why do I have to do this…”

One of the group assigned to clean the toilets with Ed, Scott, started complaining.

Kachua’s son, Ed, had safely passed the entrance exam to the prestigious Loa Academy Junior School and became an honors student candidate.

Honors students were apparently those appointed as role models for others.

Until the start of school, Ed and the other honors student candidates had to go through an aptitude test for the honors program.

After searching for supplies in the storage room, the next task assigned to Ed and the others was—of all things—to clean the toilets.

“Why am I stuck doing this with you guys, anyway?”

Scott’s irritation was directed at Ed and the others.

The members assigned to clean the toilets were the same as those who had searched for supplies in the storage room: Ed, Mark, Isaac, and William.

“It’s because the aptitude test is entering the second half. From now on, we’ll be acting as a team.”

Mark calmly answered Scott’s outburst.

“You know a lot, Mark.”

Ed was impressed.

“This much is common knowledge. Most students entering the junior school are children of graduates. We get all kinds of information.”

“And plenty of pressure to go with it,”

Isaac added with a weary sigh.

It sounded a bit enviable to have family or relatives who were graduates, but apparently, that came with its own troubles.

“But can you really judge someone’s suitability for the honors program by having them clean toilets?”

Ed tilted his head.

“Cleaning toilets is one of the punishments at junior school” Isaac said.

“Huh, this is a punishment? We haven’t done anything wrong, have we?”

William exclaimed in surprise.

“They say one of the honors student’s duties is to supervise punishments. If you don’t know what the punishment is, you can’t supervise it… or something like that,”

Isaac finished, sounding a little unsure.

“Hey, don’t slack off. If we lose points, it’ll be your fault” Scott said arrogantly to Ed and the others.

“Points off again, huh…”

Mark looked fed up.

Ed and William made good use of their experience cleaning toilets at home, working efficiently. The other boys, though less experienced, still did a decent job with their share of the cleaning.

The toilets they were cleaning were in the area mainly used by first-year students, with separate facilities for girls and boys. The space was pretty large, so it took a long time to finish.

“Oh, cleaning the toilets, are you? Very impressive, very impressive.”

The person who spoke to them was an unfamiliar middle-aged man.

The teachers at this school wore robes reserved for staff, but this man was dressed more like an adventurer.

His build was also more like an adventurer’s, and he didn’t look much like a teacher at all…?

“Um, who are you?”

Ed mustered his courage and asked.

“I’m Danness Jicar, a teacher here.”

“What, you’re a teacher?”

“That’s right. I teach physical education—general martial arts. At our school, the motto is excellence in both academics and athletics. Studying is important, but when you’re a child, strengthening your body is just as vital.”

“Y-yes, sir.”

Everyone straightened their backs and replied crisply.

Danness-sensei nodded in approval and looked over Ed and the others, one by one.

“You all must be the new students for this school year. I look forward to seeing you after you enroll. By the way, have you heard about the Sticky Venom Worm that showed up on campus?”

“S-sticky venom worm?!”

Ed and the others murmured anxiously.

“Ah, don’t worry, it’s already been exterminated. But there’s a chance some might still be hiding somewhere. Does anyone here know anything about the habits of the Sticky Venom Worm?”

Danness-sensei asked the boys.

William, whose parents are adventurers, raised his hand.

“Yes, it’s a type of worm monster, and as the name suggests, it’s poisonous. They prefer narrow, dark places.”

Danness-sensei gave a satisfied, toothy grin.

“Oh, that’s a perfect answer. If you spot a Sticky Venom Worm, call a teacher or an upperclassman. Or, if you can, you’re welcome to take care of it yourselves.”

Danness-sensei encouraged them, sounding quite bold.

“But it’s poisonous, isn’t it?” Ed asked the teacher nervously.

“Isn’t that dangerous?” Isaac sounded hesitant as well.

“It may be a low-ranked monster, but it’s still a monster. So yeah, it’s dangerous.”

“Huh?”

The boys were thrown off by how bluntly he said that.

“Slimes and these Sticky Venom Worms are considered the weakest, F-rank monsters. But if you let your guard down, even adults can become their prey.”

There are rare tragedies in rural areas where lower-ranked monsters slip into homes and attack people.

That’s why it’s important to have wards and other defenses to protect your house from monsters.

“But listen, boys—no, all people—there are times when you must stand and fight. The ones who can summon their courage and rise up in such moments are true heroes. So, hone both your mind and your body and be ready for the battles to come.”

With his expression suddenly sharpening, Danness-sensei’s words struck a cool chord in the boys’ hearts.

“Heroes…”

“Times when you have to fight, huh…”

The boys couldn’t help but feel inspired.

“C-could we really defeat one ourselves?” William asked.

Danness-sensei nodded firmly.

“The first step is to know your enemy. Sticky Venom Worms, like all worm monsters, can inflict status effects with their bites or by spreading toxins. Don’t get close carelessly—keep your distance. The most effective way to fight worm monsters is with long-range attacks. Their weak points are fire, and physical attacks with weapons like bows and arrows are also very effective.”

Ed, who couldn’t use magic or any ranged weapons, asked Danness-sensei a question.

“What should you do if you don’t have a way to attack from a distance?”

“Use the longest weapon you can—something that gives you reach, like a spear rather than a sword. If you don’t have a spear, try a broom, deck brush, mop—anything around you that might work. Stay calm and think about how you can win. That’s the great gift humans have: wisdom.”

“Deck brush…”

“Wisdom…”

Without thinking, the boys all stared at the cleaning tools in their hands.

“The poison of the Sticky Venom Worm isn’t very strong. If you get bitten, some antidote will cure you right away, so just whack it with a deck brush!”

“W-whack it, huh…”

“But, it’s pretty big for a worm. About this long—”

Danness-sensei spread his hands about thirty centimeters apart to show its length.

“And about this thick—”

He then showed about eight centimeters with his fingertips.

That’s pretty big for a worm.

“They’re actually quite quick, too. And for some reason, they always go for your face.”

“…”

That last bit left the boys looking pale.

“Well, be careful now” Danness-sensei said as he walked away.

“Ugh, first a centipede, now a worm…” Scott groaned, holding his head.

“Alright, let’s just hurry up and finish cleaning before any worms show up” Isaac said.

“Yeah” everyone agreed, their hearts united.

For a while, the boys silently threw themselves into cleaning the toilets. But in the end, tragedy struck.

Just as they finished, Scott went to put away the cleaning supplies—and he found it.

Lurking in the shadow of a bucket was a giant worm, about thirty centimeters long and eight centimeters thick.

“Gyaaaa! There it is!”

The Sticky Venom Worm had appeared!
