- Chapter 74 - Detox Hot Spring Village — Frog’s Bath, Part 2
The poison of the Doku-doku Frogs was one that would eventually transform its victim into a frog for a set period of time.
If Rick turned into a frog, it would be a disaster.
So Kachua and her companions decided to head for the Detox Hot Spring Village immediately.
Ann pressed Amakichi.
“Then hurry up and take us to this so-called Detox Hot Spring Village.”
“Very well, but before that, customers, you’ll have to pay the fee.”
Amakichi’s eyes gleamed sharply.
“How much?”
Amakichi grinned wickedly, “Kekekero.”
“Half of the gold ingots dropped from the Gold Ingot Golem. Or one million gold, kero.”
“Wh-what, one million gold!?”
One million gold was about the amount it would take for one person to stay at an inn in the labyrinth city of Loa roughly a hundred times.
“This is highway robbery,”
Bernhardt said angrily.
“It is, kero, sir. But only our hot spring can cure this poison. So what will it be? If you don’t like it, that’s fine, if you don’t like it… kekekero.” Ama-kichi said, watching them closely.
“Just as the rumors say, it is a rip-off.”
Ann let out a sigh in exasperation.
“Hey, hey, Frog-san.”
Kachua called out to Amakichi.
“What is it? Even for one gold, I will not give you a discount, kero.”
“We received this, but can we use it, I wonder?”
Kachua showed Amakichi the ticket she had tucked away inside her coin purse, the one that read Detox Hot Spring Village – Frog’s Bathhouse – Group Invitation Ticket.
“Allow me to see it, kero.”
Amakichi looked it over and was startled.
“This is indeed one of our special invitation tickets, kero. We were not supposed to hand these out to humans, but it is genuine, kero.”
Amakichi dropped his shoulders in disappointment.
“I thought I could swindle you, how unfortunate, kero…”
So he really had intended to swindle them.
“Hurry up.”
Laura said.
She looked worried about Rick.
“Then I shall escort everyone to the Detox Hot Spring Village, kero. Please follow me.”
As he said that, Amakichi hopped lightly over to a nearby wall and touched it.
“Here we go.”
To their surprise, Amakichi casually pushed aside the stone wall with a flap.
The wall had only been wallpaper!
Beyond it was a grassy, overgrown path that looked exactly like a frog might come hopping out at any moment. There was no light, and it felt a little frightening.
“Come, come, this way please.”
Amakichi guided Kachua and the others into the path. A few steps in, there was a swamp, and on the surface of the swamp a green magic circle was drawn.
“Please jump into this.”
There was no choice now but to go.
Kachua and her companions steeled their resolve and leapt into the magic circle.
***
On the other side of the magic circle, in stark contrast to the dim little path, was a scene filled with pleasant light, a peaceful countryside in the daytime.
Right in front of Kachua and her companions stood a large gate.
The gate was roofed with unfamiliar tiles. It looked like a distant Far Eastern-style building.
On both ends at the top of the gate sat frog-shaped ceramics.
And on the signboard hanging at the gate were the words Detox Hot Spring Village – Frog’s Bathhouse.
“This is Detox Hot Spring Village, Frog’s Bathhouse. Please, go on ahead.”
Amakichi urged them, but the large gate was closed.
Thinking, Is this alright?, Kachua and the others approached the gate when suddenly,
“You are not dangerous. Enter.”
A voice came from nowhere, and the gate opened by itself.
“Eh, how does that work?”
“Detox Hot Spring Village is a space sealed by frog magic, and the only way in or out is through this gate. The gate does not allow suspicious people to enter, so you may rest assured, kero.”
Once inside, Ann spoke.
“My, it does not smell of sulfur.”
“Sulfur?”
“When you say hot springs, it is the scent of sulfur, you know.”
“Is that so”
The truth was, it was the first time Kachua, and likewise Rick and Laura, had ever been to a hot spring. Around the labyrinth city of Loa, no hot springs welled up.
“This bath here is a rare moor hot spring, kero.”
Amakichi said proudly.
“A moor hot spring?”
“It is a hot spring that wells up through layers of mud and soil. The water is black, so please do not be surprised, kero.”
“It is black, huh.”
When Kachua spoke in admiration, Amakichi puffed out his throat and leaned back with pride.
“Yes indeed. First, allow me to explain the hot springs, kero. In the hot spring village, there are ten baths: the First Bath is Ama’s Bath, the Second Bath is Ibo’s Bath, the Third Bath is Ushi’s Bath, and so on. While you may bathe in any order as you please, we recommend the method of bathing in sequence starting from the First Bath.”
“I see.”
“Each bath contains the toad oil of its respective attendant frog, and it is reputed to cure all illnesses. It is especially effective in treating injuries and poison. The effects of the toad oil differ subtly depending on the attendant frog, so by entering several types of baths, you can expect a synergistic effect, kero.”
“Hm? Hey, what is that?”
Ann pointed to the golden palace visible in the distance.
“That is Frog Castle, kero. It serves as your lodging, a rest area, the employees’ quarters, and also the residence of Lord Gama, the master of the baths.”
“I see.”
It was an Eastern-style castle, quite a peculiar building.
Kachua and her companions found themselves intrigued.
“Before guiding you to Frog Castle, it would be better if you first entered the baths, kero. I believe the poison afflicting that person will be drawn out by about the Third Bath.”
Amakichi pointed at Rick.
“Then let us go to the hot spring first.”
Passing through the gate marked First Bath, a gentle warmth of steam came into view.
There was a faint scent of sulfur.
And at the entrance of the building hung curtains marked Men’s and Women’s.
“This is the changing room, kero.”
“Alright then, let’s meet up after the hot spring.”
The Gamma Team intended to casually split up by gender, but Amakichi suddenly spun around and said,
“Ah, except for certain places, the hot spring village is mixed bathing.”
“Eh?”
“M… mixed bathing?”
The men were secretly delighted, while the women were struck with shock.
So surprised was Laura that she nearly dropped Rick from her arms.
“Eh, you mean naked?”
“You may be naked if you wish, but if it pleases you, please change into this bathing garment.”
Amakichi handed each of them a bathing garment.
“Bathing garment?”
It was clothing similar to a swimsuit.
“So, not naked then.”
The women, including Kachua, let out a sigh of relief.
Kachua and the others changed and decided to enter the hot spring at once.
It seemed there was no restriction on how to enter the baths, but for drawing out poison, the recommended method was to soak for five to ten minutes, then move on to the next bath.
First and foremost, they would prioritize treating Rick’s poison.
Next to the changing room was the washing area for cleaning the body.
“First, you wash yourself here” Ann explained.
After washing, it was finally time to enter the hot spring.
Kachua found that the bathing garment, while not naked since it was like a swimsuit, was still rather revealing.
Because of that, she thought to herself, This is a little embarrassing, but once she slipped into the water,
“Wow, the hot spring feels so good!”
The pleasantness made her voice come out on its own.
And just as Amakichi had said, the water was black, so once inside, it no longer bothered her.
Looking around the hot spring, there were frogs that looked very much like Amakichi, soaking comfortably while croaking kero kero.
Other unfamiliar animals were bathing as well, though there did not seem to be any humans.
Kachua and her companions continued touring the baths, and once they entered the Third Bath, Rick’s poison seemed to be completely gone.
“Ah, I feel better now.”
“That is wonderful.”
Everyone let out a sigh of relief.
After leaving the Third Bath, Ann immediately called out to Amakichi.
“Frog-kun, there is something I want you to tell me.”
“What is it, kero?”
Until Rick had recovered, Ann had been holding back, but now she finally asked what she had been wondering.
“I heard that if you bathe in these hot springs, you lose weight. Is that true?”
