“Damn it, it itches!”

Rick couldn’t even stand up, rolling on the ground from the unbearable itching.

As Rick lay there, another Sugoroku Snake closed in on him.

“Rick!”

Without thinking, Laura rushed forward.

“No! Jou-chan, you’ll get hit too!”

The adventurers from the『Gamble Corps of the Dawn』hurriedly tried to stop her, but Laura ran straight toward Rick without hesitation.

“Shuuu—”

With an eerie hiss, the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe released another wave of Super Misfortune Spores.

The attack rained down on Laura as well and it looked like she was about to fall but she safely reached Rick.

“Barrier! 【Snake Ward!】”

Raising her staff, Laura chanted the Snake Ward barrier spell.

Just as its name suggests, it was a barrier specifically designed to repel snakes. Though the effect was limited to only snake-type creatures, that focus made it particularly powerful and highly effective against most snake monsters.

“Ah, that spell is…”

It was the mage from the『Gamble Corps of the Dawn』 who muttered that.

He, too, had cast the same spell.

Normally, its success rate was 99 percent.

A spell that almost always succeeded, but due to the effect of Luck -100 from the Super Misfortune Spores, the spell entered the rarely occurring chant-failure state and was nullified.

Naturally, it was assumed that Laura’s magic would meet the same fate but the Snake Ward barrier was successfully deployed, and the Sugoroku Snake were blown away by its force.

“……!?”

“How?!”

The『Gamble Corps of the Dawn』stirred in surprise.

“What just happened? Who is that girl?”

Their leader, Jack, squinted his eyes to get a better look at Laura.

“That girl’s robe… it’s a Reflect Robe!”

The Reflect Robe was a garment with a magic reflection function.

“So that’s the magic-reflecting one!”

While not the easiest to use, the Reflect Robe came with a powerful reflection ability.

Thanks to that, it repelled the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe’s Super Misfortune Spores.

“Which means that thing just got hit with its own spores!”

Jack’s eyes sparkled with hope.

The merchant of the『Gamble Corps of the Dawn』who could use appraisal magic, had confirmed that the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe’s luck stat was 100.

Even if they managed to break through the Sugoroku Snake horde and attack the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe, with such a high luck value, half of their attacks wouldn’t land.

To make matters worse, under the effect of the Super Misfortune Spores, their own luck stats had dropped by 100.

In this condition, their attacks would almost never hit.

In other words, as things stood, they had no way of attacking the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe.

However—

If they could just reduce the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe’s luck stat, their attacks would start landing!

But…

“The Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe’s luck has dropped by one point. Current value: 99.”

The merchant reported with a voice unable to hide his disappointment.

Just as venomous snakes are immune to their own poison and do not die from each other’s bites—though they may weaken temporarily—the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe appeared to be similarly immune to its own spores.

The Super Misfortune Spores had only dealt the slightest bit of damage to the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe.

The『Gamble Corps of the Dawn』along with Cliff and Jessica, all turned pale at the overwhelmingly disadvantageous situation.

Amid that tension, one man raised his voice.

“Hey, we might actually have a shot at this.”

The speaker was Jack, the gambler and leader of the 『Gamble Corps of the Dawn』.

While still scratching his body, he stared intently at the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe, his eyes gleaming with excitement.

“Eh? What do you mean?”

Catching up with the group at last—thanks to the speed-reduction effect of her Absolute Defense Armor—Kachua asked the question.

As its name suggests, the Absolute Defense Armor perfectly protects its wearer on floors up to the 100th. Being on her own for a short time isn’t much of a problem. (Though she’s slow.)

From what had been said, a luck reduction of just one point—from 100 to 99—didn’t sound like a meaningful difference.

Not only Jack, but the entire『Gamble Corps of the Dawn』looked at Kachua’s appearance with wide eyes, surprised.

But Jack began to explain.

“The Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe is immune to its own spore attacks, so the effects are weak. But that doesn’t mean there’s no effect at all.”

“I see…”

“You don’t get it? The Deluxe and the regular Rare-Rare Mushroom have slightly different spore properties.”

“Uhh, the regular Rare-Rare Mushroom uses support-effect nullifying spores and the Deluxe one reduces luck by 100… right?”

“That’s right”

Jack nodded.

“Which means, other bad-luck effects that the Deluxe isn’t immune to might actually work on the bastard.”

“Other effects…?”

What Jack pulled out from inside his coat was a vial filled with a golden liquid.

“Unlucky Honey.”

Unlucky Honey is an extremely misfortune-inducing honey that, with just a single lick, reduces one’s luck stat to zero.

It was the very same item that Kachua and her team had once gathered on the fourteenth floor.

Back then, they had wondered what it was even good for.

“I’m glad I brought this just in case”

Jack said proudly—and in this case, he had every right to be.

In dungeon exploration, it’s said that success lies in minimizing what you carry and staying light. The standard approach is to leave behind anything that seems unnecessary, but B-rank teams operate differently.

“Wow, that’s amazing.”

“Anticipating every possible scenario—that’s the essence of treasure hunting” Jack said, puffing out his chest.

“That said, we still don’t know if this’ll actually work on the Deluxe bastard. And also…”

Jack handed the honey to Kachua, his tone turning awkward as he continued.

“There’s only one person here who can actually splash this honey on the Deluxe… that girl.”

He nodded with his chin—toward Laura.

“It’s too dangerous!”

Jessica hurriedly tried to stop them.

Laura’s Reflect Robe could repel magical effects, but once she stepped outside the barrier, she’d have no way to avoid the attacks of the Sugoroku Snake.

“I just need to avoid getting close to the Rare-Rare Mushroom Deluxe, right? Then I’ll use my magic to attack it from a distance…!”

Jessica raised her magic staff and aimed at the giant mushroom.

But Jack shouted at her, spitting as he did.

“Don’t underestimate luck! Listen, even a barrier spell with a 99 percent success rate failed. If it just fizzled out, that’d be fine. But if a high-powered spell backfires, we’ll be the ones getting wiped out before the Deluxe even moves.”

The『Gamble Corps of the Dawn』had already been hit by the Super Misfortune Spores.

There was no telling if a spell might misfire or even bounce back at them.

“Jessica-san, right? That girl’s the only one who can do it.”

“…………”

“If the Unlucky Honey works and drops the Deluxe’s luck, that’ll be our chance to attack.”

“But then Laura-chan will be…”

“That’s where you come in. Hey, you—yeah, you over there. It’s your turn to shine.”

The person Jack pointed to was—

“Eh? Me?”

Kachua.
