- Chapter 27 - The Magic Book of the Adventurer’s Guild
“Found it. Supreme Potions – Volume II!”
They found the book quickly. Once it was laid open on the table and everyone leaned in to look, this is what was written on the very first page.
『Ah, I know you, boy.』
“Huh? Boy—does it mean me?” Ed’s eyes went wide.
“Book-san, how do you know about me?”
『Magic books can communicate with each other even at a distance. I heard about you from《the Loa Academy》.』
“So you’re a friend of that book? Um, hello, nice to meet you. I’m Ed.”
『Indeed.』Those words appeared on the page in a satisfied tone.
『You want to know about the Supreme Status Ailment Cure Potion, don’t you?』
It seemed like it was willing to share the recipe.
“Um, can I ask something first?”
Og raised his voice.
“Uh, I’m Og. I’m the werewolf who’s been searching for the Supreme Status Ailment Cure Potion.”
Looking a little tense, Og greeted the book and then asked with a solemn expression,
“Um… Kachua-san told me about something called 『Lunatic』. Will I… will I end up attacking people, like that beastman wolf who attacked me?”
That had been Og’s biggest worry lately.
Would he eventually turn into a monster like the wolf beastman who had attacked him?
After a brief silence, new words began to appear on the page.
『Lunatic is a phenomenon where wolf beastmen, blessed by the Moon Goddess, fall into a state of madness under the full moon. It is said they lose control of their destructive urges. Werewolves are their victims… but they share the same impulses.』
“…!” Og gasped.
『However,』the book continued.
『Og, you said your name was? Since becoming a werewolf, you’ve gone through several full moons. Have there been any changes?』
“On full moon nights I feel restless, like something’s stirring inside. Sometimes I even get kind of… violent.” Og confessed.
『And yet you never attacked anyone. Beastmen carry both a human heart and a beast’s heart. On full moon nights, the hearts of wolf beastmen lean toward the beast. But don’t forget—so long as your heart holds love and justice, you will never fully become a beast.』
“…That’s kinda badass…” Rick muttered.
“Yeah.” Laura couldn’t help but agree.
『These urges are instinct. You can’t erase them completely. But there are items that help suppress them.』
“R-really? What kind…?”
『The Ring of the New Moon. Crafted by the dwarves.』
“Dwarves? Where can I find them?”
But the magic book didn’t answer Og’s question. Instead, new words appeared, moving on to something else.
『Each beastman race has a specific time or condition under which their mental balance becomes unstable. For example, feline beastmen…』
The magic book’s lecture continued on and Kachua slowly started to feel drowsy…
『Let’s stop here for now.』
“Okay. Thank you, Book-san.”
『We’ll meet again, boy.』
When Kachua jolted awake with a『Hah』, it was already all over.

Kachua and the others moved to a small eatery near the Adventurer’s Guild. While having lunch, they asked Ed and the others to explain what they had heard from the book.
Kachua had dozed off and so had Rick. Ann had been half-asleep too, so it was probably fine (…probably?).
“So, in the end, the book didn’t tell you the recipe?” Kachua asked.
Ed shook his head.
“No, it did. It even gave us one of the ingredients.”
“Wait, it really told you? Even gave you a material?”
“Here,” Laura said, showing a small pouch that fit in the palm of her hand.
“Oooh, so this is it. What’s the ingredient called?”
“『Claw Dirt of the Magic Book』.”
“…What?”
“『Claw Dirt of the Magic Book』.”
“Wait, that’s… medicine? Are we sure we’re not being tricked?”
“Do books even have claws?” Rick tilted his head.
“Some books do,” Ed replied.
“They say the thumb-index tabs on some books are called『claw hooks』. See? They’re made to let your fingers hook in easily.”
Thick, heavy books sometimes have thumb-cut index tabs to make flipping pages easier. Apparently, those are referred to as 『claw hooks』.
Sure enough, Supreme Potions – Volume II had them too.
But the dirt from those claws?
That was probably just dust.
“It said it’s valuable.”
“H-huh… I see. So what’s the newly discovered ingredient?”
“……”
At Kachua’s question, Og and Laura exchanged glances.
As if steeling herself, Laura answered.
“It gave us several. One of them is Moonlight Queen Grass, the one Ann-san was searching for.”
“Eh…”
Og continued in a serious voice.
“They say only one of them can be obtained per party…”
The Moonlight Queen Grass on the 25th floor of the dungeon was the main ingredient in the 『Beauty Potion』 that Ann had been aiming for.
“I see…”
Which meant only one of their wishes either Og’s or Ann’s, could come true.
A gloomy mood fell over the table but the one who blew it away was none other than Ann.
“Come on, that’s it? If that’s all, then let Og use the grass.”
“Eh—” Everyone turned toward Ann in surprise.
“Wait, are you sure?”
Ann laughed brightly.
“It’s fine! I’ll give it up for a friend. I mean, the 『Beauty Potion』was for making this already-beautiful me even more beautiful. Honestly, as long as I can lose weight, I’ve got no problem. Alright, then—my next target will be the 『Slimming Herb』 they say grows on a higher floor.”
“You move around so much already, Ann. You’d think you’d slim down easily.”
When Kachua said that, Ann, who was a little on the chubby side, sighed.
“I think so too, but it’s not going so well,” she said, munching on her post-meal strawberry shortcake.
…That was probably the cause of failure.
“Ann-san, thank you so much,” Og bowed deeply in gratitude.
“It’s fine. Just help me find the 『Slimming Herb』 in return.”
“Of course! I will!”
“Still,” Kachua suddenly remembered something.
“In the end, that magic book never answered your question, Og.”
“…I think it was telling me to find the answer on my own.” Og said.
“Ah, I see.”
“Then let’s all search for it together.”
“Yeah.”

“See you later!”
After parting with the others, Kachua and Ed headed home.
“Mother, magic potions are amazing, huh?”
“They really are.”
“I want to become an apothecary.”
“Oh? Is that so?”
Just a while ago, Ed had been saying he wanted to be a knight like his father, Alan. But now, it seemed he was aiming to become an apothecary.
“Yeah. And magic books are super interesting, so I want to read lots of them. I wonder how magic books are made?”
“Yeah… it really is mysterious how those books work.”
“There’s so much I want to learn. So many things I want to do. That’s why—I hope I can pass the Junior Academy exam.”
“Mm-hmm. Do your best on the test.”
“Yeah.”
It seemed Ed was now genuinely motivated to attend the Academy’s Junior School.
Seeing his growth brought a warm smile to Kachua’s face.
