- Chapter 2 - Skill [Housewife/Househusband] Gift!
“Lo-login bonus!? What’s going on?” Kachua screamed, but the strange situation continued. The statue of the goddess in front of her suddenly began to glow.
“Eek!”
The goddess statue glows when restoring stamina and magic power, but this was a much brighter, more dazzling light. Kachua instinctively closed her eyes.
“…?”
After a moment, she cautiously opened them again. The statue stood as if nothing had happened. However, something had fallen in front of it. It hadn’t been there before.
“What… is this?”
It was a small pouch, slightly larger than the palm of her hand. The top had a metal clasp, and the bottom was made of fabric. The shape was an irregular oval. The fabric’s pattern featured the mascot character of this labyrinth city, Loa-chan.
The mythical beast Loa is said to reside at the top level of the Labyrinth of Loa, but no one has ever reached that floor, so no one has seen it. It’s more of an imaginary creature. Loa-chan is a cute, deformed version of this mythical beast. The actual Loa is a chimera-like creature, with a goat’s body, eight legs, three horns, wings, and a split tail, and somehow, it wears a crown.
So, despite the city’s best efforts, Loa-chan didn’t end up very cute. This pouch featured an illustration of Loa-chan.
“If this is lost property, I should return it…”
Kachua timidly reached for the small pouch, but suddenly, a transparent board appeared in front of her!
“A status board!”
A status board is a mysterious panel that appears when something happens, like leveling up, increasing parameters, defeating special bosses, or obtaining new items in the dungeon. New adventurers learn about it in a brief one-hour training session upon registration. However, Kachua was still at level 1, so this was her first time seeing one.
The status board vanishes as soon as you glance at it. You’re taught not to panic and read it slowly.
A person’s status is a quantified version of their condition, and it can be checked by using appraisal magic from a skilled magician or by donating to a church. However, this costs money, and the result only shows your current state.
When Kachua joined the Adventurers’ Guild, they did a quick check for any useful skills, but she was told she didn’t have any talents of note. Frankly, if you had amazing skills, you’d already know without needing an appraisal. So, it’s rare for a special talent to be discovered through appraisal, making it something most ordinary people never experience.
Kachua, who had never seen a status board before, stared at it with nervous excitement.
And what was written there?
—100 Login Bonus! Congratulations, you have acquired the skill [Housewife/Househusband]—
“Ah!” Kachua screamed as confetti burst from the screen along with a “pop” sound when she read the “Congratulations!” She had been staring at the board, so the surprise really startled her.
There was more text on the board, but before she could finish reading, it blinked and was replaced with another message.
Kachua panicked, but there was nothing she could do.
“Alright, I won’t close my eyes this time.”
Determined, she focused on the new message.
—Skill [Housewife] unlocked!
Special reward #1: Fashionable Coin Purse—
A long arrow on the screen pointed towards the mysterious pouch from earlier. It seemed this “fashionable coin purse” was what the pouch was called.
The status board continued.
—Fashionable Coin Purse:
A fashionable purse featuring a cute mascot character.—
Whether Loa-chan was “cute” or not was debatable (Kachua thought it was more “creepy-cute”), but she focused on the next description. What kind of item was this coin purse?
—A must-have for any housewife!
Open it once a day to find a delicious candy (monster flavor). Popular with both monsters and children! *One candy per day.—
Candy, huh?
It seemed like a modest reward, but having a stash of candy was always handy, especially since children loved sweets. But what exactly was “monster flavor”? Was it safe for kids to eat?
Despite her doubts, the status board instructed her to “Open it now!” so Kachua picked up the purse and clicked it open.
Inside were five pieces of candy.
—Skill reward #2: Five free candies!—
Kachua couldn’t help but blurt out, “That’s it?” though she was slightly happy. She had two children, and giving them just one candy would surely cause a fight. Plus, she was a bit worried about giving them “monster flavor” candy without trying it first, so having five was a relief. As expected of the [Housewife] skill—it understood a mother’s concerns.
“…”
Kachua hesitated for a moment but then decided to try one herself.
BING!
A new message appeared on the status board.
—Monster-flavored Candy:
A delicious soda-flavored candy. Calms the emotions of monsters. Loved by children.—
The candy was sweet, refreshing, and slightly fizzy.
“When I get home, I’ll give some to Ed and Barbara,” Kachua said, putting the candy back into the purse.
“Oh?”
She noticed an inner pocket inside the purse. Tucked inside was a small slip of paper that read “Monster Point Card.”
“Monster Point Card?”
The status board changed again.
—Skill reward #3: Monster Point Card!
Earn 1 point for every monster defeated. Collect points to receive special rewards! Double points on special days! Don’t miss out!—
“Well, that’s nice.”
The card was still blank, but collecting points would lead to luxurious rewards. Kachua scanned the list, her eyes stopping at the tenth slot.
“Wow, a ‘Slime Hat’ for 10 points?”
Slime Hats were drop items from monsters in the dungeon, and they were recently very popular among children.
“Ed has been wanting one of those…”
But Kachua sighed. She was just a porter, with no weapons or armor. She had never even defeated the weakest monster, a slime.
“Defeating ten monsters? That’s impossible for me.”
Suddenly, Kachua remembered.
“Oh no, I’ll be late picking up Barbara!”
Stuffing the point card back into the purse, Kachua hurriedly stood up. There was still more written on the status board, but she didn’t have time to read it.
As she slung her backpack over her shoulders and began to walk away, a large sheet of paper fluttered down from above.
“Huh?” Kachua absentmindedly picked it up. “A dungeon flyer?”
It was a colorful sheet filled with special offers and deals. She almost started reading it but stopped herself.
“I really will be late!”
Quickly folding the flyer, she stuffed it into the purse. And with that, she left the dungeon.
