Bai Qiuye suddenly pointed at the hairband man’s feet and said, “What’s that?”

The others looked over and saw a piece of flowery paper lying on the ground.

Mo Jie: “This is what Zhong Ying pulled on her hand earlier.

The Hairband Man picked up the piece of paper, only to see a paragraph written on it.

[Job title: Funeral Practitioner.]

[Benefits: Competitive salary, extra bonuses, work less but earn more, preferential treatment]

[Job requirements:

1. You must be responsible for the proper functioning of the work.

2. You must set the body handling plan and carry out the implementation.

3. You must communicate with the employer to complete work matters.]

[Job qualifications:

1. You must have more than 10 experience in handling dangerous substances.

2. You must have certain funeral knowledge.

3. You must have strong psychological quality and execution ability].

The hairband man was shocked, “This is actually a job advertisement.”

Bai Qiuye asked, “What is the job advertisement?”

“It’s a reward from the last copy, and it has the potential to appear anywhere.” Mo Jie said, “For example, on TV, on poles, on flyers handed out by NPCs. The person who gets the job will get more rewards than others if they enter the copy specified by the job”.

He pointed to the flyer where it said [Benefits].

“The extra bonus refers to the special props that can be taken from the replica.” Mo Jie said, “This is a very valuable resource, it’s hard to come across one even if you enter ten copies. I’m afraid Zhong Ying came for this.”

Bai Qiuye’s heart moved, “These props, do they have any characteristics?”

“They fall into three categories. The first category, auxiliary props. As the name suggests, they only play an auxiliary role and have the worst effect.” Mo Jie said, “The second category, defensive props. It can play a defensive role and is an indispensable prop.”

“The third category, resistance props. That is, props that can cause damage to ghosts and monsters.” Mo Jie’s lens flashed a white light, “Of course, this kind of prop is rare.”

He had entered this copy because he had inquired about the possibility of resistances appearing here.

Bai Qiuye’s heart moved.

She had been in this copy for 13 years, how come she hadn’t seen the good things Mo Jie was talking about?

She subconsciously touched her leg and felt the metallic touch of the firewood knife under her skirt.

”It can’t be like that …… No, no, no, these are everywhere, I’ve picked up hundreds of them by the roadside, how can it be as valuable as he said?”

At this time, Mo Jie suddenly handed her the flyer, ”This is for you.”

Bai Qiuye asked back suspiciously, “What?”

Bai Qiuye asked back suspiciously, “Why are you giving it to me?

Was there some kind of conspiracy?

“Job advertisements all have a certain level of protection for applicants.” Mo Jie said, “Even though Zhong Ying died before she could use it, the effect is still there.”

He gave it to Bai Qiuye because Bai Qiuye’s newbie protection mechanism had a big part to play in the next scene.

Within the six hours of the cooldown, they had to protect Bai Qiuye.

Although the hairband man wanted it to, he had the same considerations as Mo Jie.

Besides, he had found out about Bai Qiuye’s relationship with the Boss and agreed to Mo Jie’s arrangement.

Liu He watched the situation coldly, like an emotionless puppet.

At first, Bai Qiuye did not reach out to pick up the flyer, her squinting eyes watching it carefully. Only then did she stretch out two fingers and pick up the flyer as if she was carrying something out of dirty water. And instead of putting it away, she left it hanging halfway in the air, as if it had a virus on it.

Everyone else: “….”

She got what everyone wanted, but she still looked disgusted!

It’s so annoying!

Soon they saw several grave bags with white paper flags swaying and rustling in the wind. The ground looked barren and gloomy with dirty yellow paper money scattered about.

After arriving here, the moon seemed to have disappeared, or perhaps it was because it was hidden by the trees and mountain which looked particularly scary.

They heard the sound of a rushing stream, just beyond the earthy slope where the grave bags were piled.

“The bone washing place is next to the cemetery.” The hairband man swallowed in the darkness, “That’s so disturbing.”

They lit the candles they had brought from Widow Du’s house. The faint light only illuminated the area in front of their toes.

Having light was more frightening than a blanket of darkness.

For it makes one wonder what lies beyond the light.

They bypassed the grave bag with the paper vassals in it and climbed up the slope, only to see a stream pass in front of them.

With two highs and a low, the wind passed through the middle, creating a cool breeze.

It blew the people’s hair into their faces, and their ears were filled with a whispering sound like the cries of ghosts.

They carefully walked down the ramp, their emotions growing more tense. Liu He suddenly let out a sound, his body dropping to the ground. “There’s a well here.”

It turned out that the one that had just tripped him was a short well.

If he hadn’t reacted quickly and grabbed the edge of the well with both hands in time, I’m afraid he would have fallen in at that moment.

It turned out that it was a shallow well that had tripped him just now.

If he hadn’t reacted quickly and put his hands on the edge of the well in time, he would have fallen into it.

The hairband man sniffed, “Why does it smell like alkali?”

Mo Jie suddenly reacted, “There is natural alkali in this well.

The hairband man was puzzled, “What is the function of natural alkali?”

Bai Qiuye said, “Don’t you know that beef soaked in alkaline water is easier to stew and cook?”

Hairband man: “…”

Don’t use such a horrible metaphor!

Bai Qiuye picked up a rope beside the well: “Here’s a rope.”

They opened the cloth wrapped around the body and tied Widow Du’s husband up with a rope.

Because the wellhead is narrow, the body cannot lie down and be put into the well. The only way to do it is to hold the body, stand it up, and put one end into the well first.

Liu He held the body on his shoulder and removed the cloth. The cold touch of the body spread from his shoulder and made him frown.

Seeing that the rope was about to be released, Liu He suddenly stopped moving: “There’s something blocking it and it can’t sink.”

The alkaline water is at the bottom of the well, and the current height of the body can only touch the water with its toes.

Mo Jie said, “Let’s bring it up first and see what’s underneath.

They pulled out the rope, and Widow Du’s husband saw the sun again.

There was an iron hook at the end of the rope, and Liu He went straight for it, as if fishing.

Liu He felt the rope sink into the water and touched it a few times, “It’s very heavy.”

The others rushed forward to help, and together they pulled on the rope, lifting whatever that was blocking the well.

Something was scraping against the wall of the well, large and incredibly heavy. It even felt like they were pulling a long, wet sponge.

What came into view was a swollen face, a body that looked as if it had died of drowning, the skin bulging in a muddy greenish colour. The body was wet and covered in water stains.

When it was hooked out of the well, it happened to be facing several people. It was as if it had climbed out of the well on its own and was hanging on the wall, watching these few uninvited guests.

Liu He’s voice paused, “Clothes.”

A glimmer of red reflected in his eyes, which was particularly dazzling and bizarre in the dark surroundings.

What the corpse was wearing was unexpectedly a dark red shroud.

Red, when placed elsewhere, was a colour of enthusiasm.

But in the copy, it was the colour of great evil.

When Bai Qiuye saw this, her pupils constricted and horror surged through her.

She hadn’t seen this corpse in thousands of repeated tasks.

Bai Qiuye felt a strong violation from it.

Her mind was acting on her body and she found it hard to breathe. It was as if someone had forced hot asphalt up her nose.

“There are actually some places where it is customary to wear red shrouds.” Seeing the crowd’s tensed emotions, Mo Jie comforted them, “To prevent people from going to the stripping pavilion after death, they dress the deceased in red, and when the spirits see it, they think it’s bleeding, so they stop, or else their skin will be torn.”

He concluded, “So the red shroud doesn’t necessarily mean evil.”

Mo Jie’s words did not reassure the few people present, and everyone knew that he was just saying that to calm their nerves.

The swollen body in front of them, abandoned in the well, spoke for itself.

They laid the body flat on the ground and replaced Widow Du’s husband at the bottom of the well.

Then they stood at the edge of the well as if facing an enemy, waiting for the immersion to end.

Suddenly, Bai Qiuye’s body trembled.

The others caught sight of her movements and subconsciously trembled along with her.

The hairband man asked nervously, “What’s wrong?”

Bai Qiuye patted her chest and gasped slightly, “It scared me.

The hair band man looked down at the red shroud, “No, nothing’s wrong…”

Before the words left his mouth, a corner of the red shroud on the ground was lifted.

The hairband man jumped a three feet into the air, “Fuck!”

Bai Qiuye also shouted, “Don’t be scared, it’s just a rat!”

Hairband man: “……”

Who was the person who was startled just now?

The rat jumped over and picked up a corner of the red shroud, revealing a dark brown colour underneath.

The hairband man found a branch and lifted up the shirt.

The corpse was carrying a ball of something wrapped in kraft paper.

After opening the kraft paper, he saw that inside was a red, thick-bottomed, hard cover notebook.

The edges of the hard cover were half-soaked with water and the pages, when opened, looked like tie-dyed white cloth, with a dense handwriting.

“On May 6, 2018. Two university students, Zhang Hui (22) and Qiu Tianxin (23), came to the village to take photographs, and under the warm hospitality of our village, decided to stay and settle here.”

“On January 1, 2019. A middle-aged man, Qin Cong (44), came to our village to study our culture and, feeling that this place was a paradise, stayed and settled here.

“On April 4, 2022. Du He (25 years old) came to our village for research and met Du Youfu from our village. They fell in love and decided to get married.

Mo Jie said, “Du He, isn’t that the name of our employer?”

On the wall of Widow Du’s house was a poster of an old calendar and the time circled on it was the 15th of July 2042, the Bon Festival.

“So she married here exactly twenty years ago and is now forty-five?” The hairband man said, “It doesn’t look like it, she looks no more than twenty-five.”

Liu He’s hand, which had been turning the pages suddenly stopped, “Look at this.”

The second half of the notebook was a record of deaths instead of new arrivals.

The foreign settlers who had previously been added to the records had basically died in various accidents.

“Wait….. Widow Du’s husband died twenty years ago. On the night of their wedding Du Youfu died suddenly and violently, and Du He went straight from being a new bride to becoming a widow. The band hired for the wedding didn’t leave, and changed the tune to play funeral music”.

The hairband man’s voice trailed off and his eyes looked into the well, “If he died twenty years ago, who is in the well now?”

Who was it they put in the well?
