- Chapter 15 - A Sudden Chill Behind Her
Ruan Qiu had been taken under the wing of the old head of the Ruan family for a few years.
Her insight and judgment sometimes surpassed Ruan Xiang’s.
From the very beginning, she disagreed with the Ruan family continuing to hold the engagement party behind the Mo family’s back. But since her parents were determined, she couldn’t disregard her family’s wishes.
“Xiao Qiu, what do you suggest we do?” Ruan Xiang was furious after receiving yet another call canceling a partnership. He felt like destroying that evil daughter.
“Wait. Let’s see if the private detective we hired can find Ruan Meng. Once the head of the Mo family cools down a bit, we might have a chance to negotiate.”
Find Ruan Meng?
Ruan Wei, who had been trying to keep a low profile, felt a flicker of emotion cross her face upon hearing Ruan Qiu’s words, her eyes betraying a hidden emotion.
Ruan Xiang was very dissatisfied with this seemingly ineffective plan, but there were no better alternatives. After all, Ruan Meng was their bargaining chip.
After calming her furious father, Ruan Qiu turned to Mrs. Ruan and Ruan Wei. “Have you contacted Ruan Meng’s classmates and friends?”
“Her friends? After the news of her being pregnant before marriage broke, who would still be her friend?” Mrs. Ruan waved her hand impatiently, while Ruan Wei shook her head. “I’m afraid that her classmates have forgotten about her. No one even mentions her.”
Ruan Qiu furrowed her brow deeply upon hearing this, suddenly feeling that her younger sister was an especially unsuccessful and unfortunate person.
Suddenly, Ruan Qiu, the only rational person in the Ruan family, felt an ominous premonition, which became terrifyingly real just a second later.
Ding-dong—
Ding-ding-ding-dong—
The doorbell of the villa rang sharply. Its incessant sound drew everyone’s attention.
“Aunt Zhang, go open the door!” Mrs. Ruan, whose name was Xia Wan, yelled irritably at the ringing bell. The family’s servant, Aunt Zhang, hurriedly set aside her tasks and rushed to the entrance to check the video monitor.
Five minutes later, having noticed Zhang hadn’t returned, a fuming Xia Wan went to check.
What she found was—
“Ahh!”
Xia Wan’s scream echoed through the entire villa, prompting Ruan Xiang and the two daughters in the living room to hurry over.
Ruan Qiu looked at her mother and Aunt Zhang, who were both frozen in place, and the empty doorway. Her heart skipped a beat. “What happened?”
With a clear conscience and in a better state than Mrs. Ruan, Aunt Zhang’s expression was one of confusion and uncertainty. “Just now, it seemed to be the Second Miss.”
“Second sister is back?” Ruan Wei’s face turned pale, and Xia Wan nodded absently. “Yes, it’s Ruan Meng.”
“Then where is she?” Ruan Xiang was oblivious to his wife’s and youngest daughter’s unease. All he could think about was Ruan Meng’s return and how it could save the Ruan family.
But after waiting for a response, he received none.
“Speak up!” Ruan Xiang questioned angrily again.
“Sir, I saw the Second Miss return and immediately opened the door for her, but she didn’t come in. She just stood at the door. Then, when Madam saw her and screamed for no apparent reason, the Second Miss suddenly vanished.”
“?” Zhang’s explanation left everyone exchanging glances and feeling uneasy. Ruan Wei even felt a sudden chill behind her.
In an instant, Ruan Wei found herself unable to control her body, turning around instinctively. As she raised her head to look into the living room, she let out a scream of her own.
“Ahh!”
