The temple gates were closed, and the monks inside had cleared the area.

After the mountain gate shut, the evening drum was struck, and the monks focused their minds.

Following the drum, the monks gathered in the Great Hall, reciting the Amitabha Sutra and the Eighty-Eight Buddhas’ Great Repentance, confessing their daytime mistakes and dedicating merit to all living beings.

After eating in the dining hall, monks would continue chanting either in their dormitories or before Buddha statues.

By all accounts, this over two-hundred-year-old Qianfo Temple was quite a proper, traditional temple.

Yet the abbot had a past—he had committed sins.

“Hui Ming” retreated to his small courtyard for rest.

Outside the temple walls, at the back of the mountain, Lu Cheng quietly observed.

Of course, he wasn’t peeking over the walls like some stalker. In his vision, the flycatcher, glowing purple like a radar signal, clearly marked Hui Ming’s location.

At that moment, Hui Ming was inside his private room.

During the day, Lu Cheng had memorized the layout of the room. The purple dot now corresponded to the bathroom.

So, Hui Ming was either showering or using the toilet.

As darkness fell, Lu Cheng didn’t dare use a flashlight—the light would give him away.

He swatted at the mosquitoes, the floral insect repellent helping somewhat but not enough. Mountain mosquitoes were both numerous and vicious.

Minutes later, Hui Ming emerged from the bathroom and went straight to his meditation bed.

Lu Cheng froze. Already going to sleep?

He knew monks slept early—but Hui Ming wasn’t just any monk. A man with a past like his usually stayed up to… you know.

He didn’t even approach the floor mat.

Lu Cheng simply waited. Night deepened, and the mountain air grew chilly.

He kept feeding the mosquitoes.

He had lied to He Xueting, saying someone at the precinct had called in, so he was covering a night shift and wouldn’t be home.

He Xueting wouldn’t suspect a thing. But if she knew her son was up in the mountains, swatting mosquitoes, she’d probably feel so sorry for him.

12 a.m.
1 a.m.
2 a.m…

Lu Cheng stayed awake all night. Nothing happened.

Hui Ming definitely had a shadowy side—Lu Cheng was one hundred percent certain of that.

If the abbot wanted to sneak around, it would have been in the dead of night, when all the other monks were asleep.

But last night, nothing.

Lu Cheng had spent the entire night outside, his body covered in mosquito bites. One whole bottle of repellent had been used up.

Morning came, the temple bell rang. Monks washed up, dressed, and prepared for the day’s early rituals.

Lu Cheng quietly slipped down the mountain.

If nothing had happened at night, then nothing would happen during the day.

In his vision, Hui Ming got up like the other monks, preparing for morning chanting.

Once Lu Cheng was more than 500 meters away, the flycatcher disappeared.

He drove home. He Xueting and Lu Zhiguo were still asleep.

Lu Cheng tiptoed to wash up, then returned to bed to catch a few more hours of sleep.

His physique was far superior to ordinary people; staying up all night was no big deal.

After just three hours of sleep, he woke, intending to roll over and continue resting.

Then his phone vibrated. It was He Xueting.

She knew her son was on a night shift and catching up on sleep, so she hadn’t disturbed him.

“Son, breakfast is on the table. Eat when you wake. I’m heading to the countryside to gather wild vegetables. Lunch is on you.
There are strawberries and grapes from Aunt’s garden in the fridge, delivered yesterday. Very sweet—bring some to Qingwu if you have time.”

Lu Zhiguo had left for work; He Xueting was gone to the countryside. The house was empty except for Lu Cheng.

He ate the sandwiches and milk his mother had prepared, then returned to bed for another two hours.

When he finally brushed his teeth and washed up, he noticed the mosquito bites on his body had vanished.

Probably an attribute point from the system boosting his constitution to a new level—mosquito bites healed quickly now.

At noon, he carried the fruit to see Su Qingwu.

Lu Cheng was already a familiar face at the Criminal Investigation Brigade. No registration needed—he could walk straight in.

Just as he arrived, a group of officers were heading out to lunch, Su Qingwu among them.

Xiao Zheng and Xiao Hu spotted him first. “Yo! Lu Ge, here to see Su Team again? Pretty diligent!”

All eyes turned to Lu Cheng.

Su Qingwu, expressionless as always, walked over coolly.

“What did you bring?”
“Strawberries and grapes from my aunt’s garden. Very sweet.”

The officers let out meaningful “oh”s, teasing him about being the perfect boyfriend, joking about when he would attend their wedding celebrations.

Lu Cheng shook his head, his cheeks flushing slightly.

Su Qingwu remained aloof, her emotions unreadable.

Xiao Hu, a gluttonous fool, reached for the fruit. Xiao Zheng grabbed him. “You only get to eat dog food, scram!”

“Have you had lunch?” Su Qingwu asked softly.

Lu Cheng shook his head. She led him to the cafeteria.

The precinct cafeteria food was similar to Sanliqiao Police Station’s, but slightly better.

The Economic Crime team also came to eat. Seeing the “Special Catch,” they enthusiastically greeted him.

They were busy with the Ma Kuixiang counterfeit note case. Over 23 million in fake bills had to be tracked, and all buyers caught—a massive workload.

After lunch, a few young, brash officers challenged Lu Cheng to arm wrestling.

They all knew he was strong and wanted to test him.

“You can’t beat him,” Su Qingwu said coolly.

Her words detonated the group like fireworks.

“Oh! How can we know if we don’t try!”
“Come on! Let’s see how strong he really is!”
“My boyfriend’s amazing! Compliments like that? I won’t stand for it!”

Some rolled up their sleeves, flexing muscular arms.

Su Qingwu, uninterested in this childishness, took the fruit from Lu Cheng and went upstairs.

The bruises Lu Cheng had caused her last time hadn’t fully healed.

She knew these young officers weren’t a match for him.

Xiao Zheng acted as referee. Lu Cheng faced four opponents.

“Ready… One, two, three, go!”

Smack!

The moment the signal was given, Lu Cheng slammed the opponent’s hand onto the table.

Almost instantly.

Everyone froze.

“Fengzi, what happened? That was instant!”

The young officer looked shocked.

“No, no! I wasn’t ready! Again!”

Lu Cheng: “Fine.”

“Ready… go!”

Smack!

Exactly the same.

This time, the officer didn’t hesitate. He only felt an overwhelming force crushing his wrist—no chance to resist—instantly defeated.

Holy crap.

What kind of strength was that?!
