It just so happened that several other precinct chiefs were nearby. Seeing the commotion, they all stood up, eager to join in on the spectacle.

Zhao Han added, “And the one being extorted? It’s Su Qingwu’s mother, Shen Fang.”

Two mothers out shopping together!

The faces of the precinct chiefs instantly fell—wives of provincial-level officials!

Everyone knew Su Qingwu was dating that Lu Cheng guy, but nobody expected it to progress this fast. Their mothers were now out together, shopping!

Good heavens… people nowadays have no fear of law or shame! They’d extort anyone!

Chen Weimin was particularly tense. After all, this incident happened in the Sanliqiao precinct—right in his jurisdiction—and involved the wife of a provincial bigwig.

If not handled promptly, the consequences could be serious. But if dealt with quickly and properly, it might even leave a good impression on the provincial leadership.

Chen Weimin’s heart raced as he whispered with Zhao Han, then hurried off with the other precinct chiefs to the scene.

Zhao Han went to call in reinforcements—anyone not out on patrol was to join, every single available officer.

…

Lu Cheng hung up the phone. Su Qingwu asked, “Did you contact the precinct?”

He nodded, then scanned the surroundings—no visible security cameras.

But the street parking was packed. Several of the cars were new-energy vehicles, their cameras blinking red—sentry mode activated.

Lu Cheng sent all the license plate numbers to Zhao Han, asking him to contact the owners and have them cooperate with the investigation.

When Zhao Han called, he emphasized the severity of the situation. If the owners didn’t cooperate, they could face criminal liability.

The owners panicked and rushed to the scene immediately.

“One of the cars hit the daughter of that woman… and she’s a cop! And not just any cop—she holds a decent rank!”

“Do you think this would just be swept under the rug if she’s a cop?”

“Paying for damages is natural! So what if she’s a cop?”

“The facts aren’t clear yet. If this is really extortion, the elderly family’s in deep trouble!”

…

The elderly family didn’t care about the victim being a cop. Money was all that mattered, and since there were no visible cameras, they assumed they could get away with it.

Public officials fear situations going viral online, especially without evidence. They could easily be forced to swallow an unjust loss.

Back at the Criminal Investigation Unit, Qin Mian returned from reporting to leadership, only to find Su Qingwu missing. He asked Xiao Zheng.

“She went out twenty minutes ago,” Xiao Zheng replied. “Her mom was extorted while helping an elderly man.”

Qin Mian’s heart skipped a beat. The wife of a provincial official… extorted?!

These people had no idea what they were doing!

Frowning, Qin Mian grabbed Xiao Zheng and Xiao Hu and drove straight to the scene.

By the time a large contingent of police arrived, both the crowd of onlookers and the elderly family were stunned.

They knew the police would handle it—but not THIS many officers!

Chen Weimin and Lü Zhengbo had arrived first. All precinct chiefs, two-cents-a-rank police badges in clear view.

Those with sense instinctively stepped back. Wow… the situation had escalated.

Next came Zhao Han and his team, then Qin Mian’s criminal investigators. Five or six police cars blocked half the street.

Traffic police arrived to manage the crowd and traffic.

The sight left both the onlookers and the elderly family speechless.

The elderly daughter swallowed nervously and whispered to her brother, “So many cops… do we still try to extort them? Will we get into trouble?”

Her brother paled. “I… think trouble’s already here…”

At that moment, the car owners Zhao Han had called rushed in. Seeing the police presence, they were terrified.

Zhao Han immediately sent Yuan Jie and Chen Zelong to check the sentry-mode footage from the new-energy vehicles.

The elderly family’s faces drained of color.

They had only noticed the lack of visible cameras, forgetting the sentry-mode on these cars could see everything.

They were done for.

Lu Cheng whispered something to Chen Weimin, who glanced at the elderly son and daughter. Both nearly froze.

Qin Mian and the others merely observed—this wasn’t their turn to act yet. But they ensured the matter would be handled promptly.

Several precinct chiefs were there to support He Xueting and Shen Fang.

All available vehicle footage was extracted, and Chen Weimin swiped through it on a tablet.

“Alright, we cops serve the people. You don’t repay kindness… and now you try to extort our officer’s family?!”

“Look at this! North, south, east, west, front, back—high-definition footage from multiple angles!”

“The elderly woman fell on her own, you tried to help her, and instead you tried to extort her!”

“Ha! Thought we couldn’t handle it because there were no cameras?”

“Even if we didn’t have this footage, we could pull satellite surveillance. We could see ants on the street!”

“What goes around comes around! You thought you could extort anyone?”

Chen Weimin spat, furious. The elderly family’s faces turned the color of cooked liver.

It was over.

The elderly woman forgot her pain and begged relentlessly.

The truth exposed, the onlookers gasped—this was extortion.

How foolish, extorting a cop’s family!

Self-inflicted, impossible to survive.

The case proceeded formally. He Xueting and Shen Fang had no intention of settling privately.

These people deserved legal punishment.

If this had happened to ordinary citizens, at most, it would have been a warning or rebuke.

But when it involves a provincial official’s wife, things were far from simple.

Moreover, Lu Cheng told Chen Weimin the elderly son and daughter looked familiar—possibly online fugitives. They needed thorough investigation.

Chen Weimin instructed Lin Wenbin and Yuan Jie to check their IDs.

The results shocked everyone.

The son was a wanted online fugitive, involved in multiple credit card frauds. He wasn’t the mastermind, but he provided the bank accounts to the scammers.

He considered it “just helping a friend,” and thought he couldn’t be held accountable.

When the police called, he hung up, claiming it was a scam call.

The daughter was a chronic debtor—borrowed twenty thousand yuan from a neighbor and vanished.

The neighbor had already sued, and judgment had been passed.

Now that the culprits were located, it was straight to court.

Everyone was stunned. What a family—no one remotely decent!

A fugitive, a deadbeat, and an extortionist.

Society had enough trouble without people like this sullying it.

“None of them are clean! Take them all in!”

Zhao Han handcuffed the entire family and led them to the police cars.

The crowd applauded the police—a warning to anyone considering extortion: the law sees all.

With the case settled, the precinct chiefs and Qin Mian approached Shen Fang to exchange pleasantries before gradually leaving.

The shopping mood for He Xueting and Shen Fang was completely gone.

Su Qingwu wanted to return to the precinct, but Shen Fang stopped her.

“Lunch will be ready in an hour. Everyone’s here—let’s eat together. Qingwu, work can wait until after lunch.”

They picked a Hong Kong-style restaurant. Lu Cheng and Su Qingwu were seated side by side.

Delicate dishes arrived, fragrance filling the air.

He Xueting smiled, “You young ones eat first. Don’t mind us.”

Shen Fang added, “Just treat us as air.”

With that, they chatted casually, pretending not to notice Lu Cheng and Su Qingwu—but their glances betrayed them.

Su Qingwu and Lu Cheng were not fooled.

Their words suggested invisibility, but their eyes said: “Go ahead, show your affection. We’re watching.”

Like a dish that’s a little bland—they needed a little sugar. They wanted to see the sweetness.
