Lu Cheng hurriedly threw on his clothes, skipping even washing his face and brushing his teeth. He grabbed his keys and rushed downstairs to drive off.

He sped like a lightning bolt toward the location He Xueting had sent.

……

“Auntie, we’re just trying to help! How can you insist we knocked you down?”

“You did knock me down! I’m an old woman! I was walking safely on the street, and you just ran into me! Your hearts are too wicked!”

On the pedestrian walkway, a gray-haired old lady rolled on the ground, yelling in pain, “Ouch! It hurts!”

He Xueting and Shen Fang wore innocent expressions, thinking, What’s wrong with people these days? Good Samaritans get scammed for their kindness!

“Auntie, why don’t you call your family to take you to the hospital? I think you really hurt yourself somewhere.”

He Xueting stepped forward to console her. The woman’s expression genuinely looked pained—not like she was faking.

Yet as soon as they helped her, she flopped back to the ground, twisting the facts, insisting that they had knocked her down.

Shen Fang understood the scheme: if you fall by yourself, you pay your own medical bills. But if you claim someone else caused it, not only could the bills be reimbursed, you might even get additional compensation for “mental distress.”

Sigh. Truly sad.

It’s not that the elderly turn bad—it’s that bad people grow old.

Shen Fang said, “Auntie, just go get checked at the hospital. Don’t extort us. There are cameras nearby. If the police check the footage, they’ll see the truth. Extortion is a crime.”

“Even if the police come, it was you who hit me! Who’s extorting whom? Pay up! Thirty thousand!”

Before attempting her scam, the old lady had already scoped the surroundings: there was only one camera at the street corner, and it was facing the other way. No cameras nearby—safe to extort.

Seeing the two women calm and unbothered, showing no intention of paying, she cried and yelled even louder.

Curious bystanders started gathering.

“What’s happening? Did she hurt her back? Why isn’t anyone calling an ambulance?”

“Older people are fragile; just a small bump can break something. Hurry, take her to the hospital for an X-ray!”

“Ladies, did you hit her?”

He Xueting waved her hand. “She fell by herself. We just went to help.”

The old lady wailed, “I didn’t fall! These two women knocked me down! Ouch! My waist bone!”

Some passersby muttered: these days, helping someone often leads to being scammed. If it’s not your fault, most people wouldn’t even bother helping. So naturally, the chance that these two ladies had caused the fall seemed plausible.

“Whatever the case, we should get her to a hospital; delaying treatment isn’t good.”

Someone reminded He Xueting and Shen Fang to prioritize the hospital. Whether they caused it or not, the elderly woman seemed genuinely hurt, tears streaming down her face.

He Xueting and Shen Fang exchanged a look and shook their heads.

Take her to the hospital?

Helping her would only confirm their liability. If she went to a hospital, it’d be official—proof for her scam.

Not their fault—why take her to the hospital? Such a person wasn’t even worth pity.

The crowd around them grew larger. Soon, the woman’s children arrived.

Her son and daughter didn’t even check her injuries. They immediately berated He Xueting and Shen Fang.

“You’re heartless! You hit someone and didn’t even call an ambulance!”

“So cruel! My mother is so old! How could she withstand a fall? She must have broken something! Pay up!”

“Unless we get 100,000 yuan for medical expenses, you don’t leave!”

One hundred thousand? Weren’t they demanding thirty thousand before?

The old lady was stunned—she hadn’t expected she could demand more. She cried even harder.

A bystander couldn’t take it anymore. “Her kids are here—call an ambulance already, what are you waiting for?”

The son glanced at the onlookers, hesitated for a few seconds, then reluctantly dialed 120.

No matter what, these two women wouldn’t run; the medical fees were guaranteed.

From start to finish, the elderly woman’s children never even called her “Mom.” Their only thought: squeeze compensation from He Xueting and Shen Fang.

Seeing the son’s fierce expression and the daughter’s fiery demeanor, He Xueting pulled out her phone.

“I’ll call my son. He’s…”

“Enough! Call your son to come and pay!” the son barked.

Shen Fang also sent a message to Su Qingwu.

Ten minutes later, Lu Cheng arrived, followed closely by Su Qingwu.

Lu Cheng and Su Qingwu exchanged a glance and then approached.

They knew the full story: the elderly woman fell on her own, the women had tried to help, and now they were being extorted. A ridiculous scenario.

A handsome man and a beautiful woman appeared, stunning the crowd.

Su Qingwu hadn’t changed; she wore a navy blue police short-sleeve shirt, black trousers, simple black flat shoes, and her hair tied in a neat ponytail. Simple, professional, yet striking.

But what caught everyone’s eyes wasn’t just her beauty—it was her police rank insignia on her shoulder.

One bar, three stars.

First-Class Police Supervisor.

The elderly woman’s children froze—they didn’t expect a family member to be a police officer!

The surrounding crowd gasped. She looked barely twenty-six or twenty-seven, already a deputy division chief? Rare indeed.

Assuming she graduated from the police academy at twenty-two, a mere four to five years to reach First-Class Supervisor—that promotion speed was terrifying.

Two possibilities: extraordinary ability or influential background.

Su Qingwu had both—but her talent and effort far exceeded her father’s influence.

Those familiar with her knew she had earned an individual Third-Class Merit, an individual Second-Class Merit, and a group First-Class Merit—explaining her rapid rise. Otherwise, even as deputy captain, she wouldn’t command respect in the Criminal Investigation Division.

Lu Cheng seemed ordinary by comparison. The moment he arrived, his system skill [Flycatcher] activated.

He had assumed it triggered because of the scammer. But no—this family was all problematic.

The elderly woman and her daughter were “green,” the son was “blue.”

All suspicious.

It was clear the mother was attempting extortion, and the other two needed further investigation.

Upon seeing the police, the elderly woman suddenly stopped crying and sat cautiously on the ground.

The son and daughter whispered, noting no cameras around. As long as they pinned the blame on the women, what could the police do? Without evidence, the women would still have to pay.

The mother resumed her act, crying loudly again, while bystanders commented excitedly—this drama was escalating.

Lu Cheng shook his head at the woman’s poor performance and called his master, Zhao Han.

Although Zhao Han was on leave and couldn’t intervene directly, someone from their station could handle it.

At the time of the call, Zhao Han was in the station chief’s office listening to a group of officers boast and chat.

Lu Cheng’s previous feats had been the talk of the station for days.

Officers from Sanliqiao, Qingshijing, and Chengxi were all present.

These chiefs often competed publicly but were good friends in private—war buddies who enjoyed teasing each other.

They were discussing the “Special Capture” raid on the thieves’ hideout. Young Hao Jianping had also been reckless in his early days, eager to handle homicide cases.

But compared to Lu Cheng, he wasn’t daring enough. Raiding a ten-man gang without hesitation? Even young Hao would hesitate.

Indeed, “Special Capture” was truly exceptional.

When Zhao Han’s phone rang—it was Lu Cheng—the chiefs immediately stopped their chatter.

“Old Zhao, what does ‘Special Capture’ want?”

Chen Weimin was puzzled. Let the kid enjoy his leave; was he looking for trouble? Restless brat?

Zhao Han shook his head, serious. “Chief Chen, Lu Cheng’s mother tried to help an elderly woman on the street and got extorted.”

Chen Weimin froze, then sneered. “Ah, perfect. Extortion hitting a police family. Let’s go, see what’s happening!”
