Qin Mian spotted Lu Cheng and walked over with a smile.
He didn’t drag Lu Cheng into his office for a formal reception—after all, these “two lovebirds” were busy. Even a brief meeting was rare.
Qin Mian glanced at the disposable cup in Su Qingwu’s hand and pretended to frown.
“Special Catch is here, and you’re only offering him water?”
He called over Xiao Hu, handed him fifty yuan from his own pocket, and instructed him to go downstairs and buy a chilled watermelon.
Xiao Hu accepted the money, unsure whether to laugh or cry—they rarely received treatment like this.
Lu Cheng felt a little embarrassed.
“Captain Qin, you’re too kind.”
Su Qingwu glanced at Qin Mian, but still handed the water to Lu Cheng. Her beautiful eyes lingered on him.
He quickly took a sip. Sure, there’d be watermelon soon, but this was poured personally by Captain Su—he couldn’t refuse.
Qin Mian chuckled.
“No need to worry about bullets; just focus on your aim.”
The previous night, Su Qingwu had reported Lu Cheng’s shooting performance to Qin Mian.
Qin Mian had assumed Lu Cheng would have natural talent for marksmanship—but it turned out… quite ordinary.
Fair enough. Not everything could come naturally to this kid.
Hearing Qin Mian’s assessment, Lu Cheng fully understood the man’s intentions.
Just like Fan Wanqing from the Economic Crime Division—he was being observed, probably with the hope of transferring him to their team in the future.
Lu Cheng, however, planned to stay at Sanliqiao Precinct for a while. He’d just joined, after all.
After participating in enough cases and upgrading his system skills, he could join the Criminal Investigation team and wreak havoc.
He really wanted to join the Criminal Investigation team—perhaps driven by the masculine sense of justice and the honor of fighting crime.
There was even a song he thought reflected his mindset: “Through countless storms and seasons, braving wind, frost, snow, and rain, enduring hardships, the heart remains unshaken.”
Of course, there was another reason.
Lu Cheng glanced at the stunning, poised Su Qingwu.
Her eyes met his, curious, as if asking: “What are you looking at?”
“Captain Qin, I won’t waste your bullets. I’ll improve next time.” Lu Cheng said confidently.
Su Qingwu cast him a sideways glance, smirking. She remembered his performance at the shooting range last night.
Without at least a thousand rounds of practice, a major improvement was impossible.
Qin Mian, however, didn’t dampen his confidence and nodded.
Soon, Xiao Hu returned, panting, with the chilled watermelon. Xiao Zheng’s fruit knife was ready, and officers not on duty grabbed slices, savoring the sweet treat.
The Criminal Investigation team was big; one slice per person nearly finished the whole melon.
One slice remained on the table. Qin Mian offered it to Lu Cheng—after all, he was a guest and had helped solve a homicide yesterday.
Lu Cheng picked it up and handed it to Su Qingwu.
“You eat.”
“I’m fine, you eat.”
“One piece is enough. You take it.”
In the end, Lu Cheng broke it in half and forced it into her hands.
The other officers could barely watch without grinding their teeth. A blatant display of affection? Out in the open? Ridiculous!
Unable to stand it, everyone else went back to work.
Even Qin Mian shook his head and retreated to his office.
Su Qingwu wasn’t sensitive to “showing off affection.” One slice was enough—she hadn’t wanted a second piece anyway, and had already wiped her mouth.
But Lu Cheng insisted, so she had to eat it.
After finishing the watermelon, Su Qingwu resumed work. Lu Cheng finished his water and prepared to leave.
Just then, Xiao Zheng and Xiao Hu came out, bickering, and called after him.
Su Qingwu raised her head, curious.
Behind the two, a few more officers from the Criminal Investigation team followed.
“Special Catch, don’t leave yet!”
“We hear your eyes are sharp. Let’s see if you can tell which of these two knives is the real murder weapon.”
Xiao Zheng held two pointed butcher knives, nearly identical, each sealed in a plastic bag.
Labels marked “No. 1” and “No. 2” with the time and location of discovery.
No obvious blood stains were visible.
But to Lu Cheng, Traces of Clues Lv2 activated—the No. 1 knife glimmered with a faint green hue.
“This is an intentional assault case. The suspect is a butcher. Stubborn as a dead duck, he claims both knives are for meat and vegetables, refusing to admit to harming anyone,” Xiao Hu summarized.
Su Qingwu asked,
“What did Old Liu say?”
Old Liu, the forensic expert, had examined the knives.
“Both knives showed traces of blood, but the DNA was severely degraded. Further testing at the city lab is required; Old Liu couldn’t do it here,” Xiao Zheng explained.
Even if blood has been scrubbed repeatedly, residual traces in tiny cracks or grooves can be detected with presumptive reagents—especially wooden handles.
But since butcher knives naturally have blood on them, DNA extraction is necessary.
Old Liu said the DNA was degraded, so testing had to go to the city lab for miniSTR.
Seeing Lu Cheng was present, Xiao Zheng and Xiao Hu decided to let him guess.
Earlier, Qin Mian had joked that Lu Cheng was sharper than a police dog. Now, the mischievous officers wanted to test him.
Su Qingwu’s brows furrowed slightly.
“Sending to the city lab takes two days. Do you still have time to waste?”
Seeing her cold tone, Xiao Zheng and Xiao Hu immediately quieted down. Ah, she’s starting to ‘protect her husband’.
Her friend, forensic expert Hu at the city lab, could handle it in a day instead of two. Connections made things easier.
Xiao Hu was about to hand the knives to Lu Cheng but hesitated.
Lu Cheng said,
“I want to see.”
The officers blinked. Sure, he could see—but he wasn’t looking at Su Qingwu? They handed the knives over.
Qin Mian came out with the kettle, curious about the crowd around Lu Cheng.
“What’s going on?”
Xiao Zheng hurriedly explained,
“Captain Qin, this is the intentional assault case. The knives’ DNA is degraded, Old Liu recommends city lab testing. Since Special Catch is here, we thought we’d see if he can tell which knife is the murder weapon.”
Qin Mian raised an eyebrow. This is nonsense! Old Liu couldn’t tell for sure—how could Lu Cheng just use his eyes?
But seeing Lu Cheng studying the knives carefully, he grew curious.
Lu Cheng already knew knife No. 1 was the murder weapon. Now he was analyzing it inversely, using elimination.
Su Qingwu stayed quiet, watching him intently. She was used to his surprises by now.
Could he really analyze forensic evidence like this? No way, she thought—there’s no such perfect man.
“Do you have a magnifying glass?” Lu Cheng asked.
“Of course!” Xiao Hu hurriedly handed one over.
The officers watched as Lu Cheng examined the knives seriously with the magnifying glass.
Could he really tell? Or was he just pretending?
Five minutes later, Lu Cheng finished and said calmly,
“I suspect knife No. 1 is the murder weapon.”
