- Chapter 6 - Lu Cheng, With Me! The System Spots a Pickpocket!
If Lu Cheng hadn’t accidentally bumped into the fugitive earlier… his blind date today would’ve been none other than the police beauty before him—Su Qingwu!
This was the kind of dreamy development straight out of a novel.
Aunt Gu’s matchmaking connections were seriously on another level!
Lu Cheng studied Su Qingwu carefully. Her face was flawless, her skin porcelain white, her figure perfect. In heels, she stood nearly eye to eye with him.
The only pity—she was too aloof, spoke little. If they were ever together, he’d have to carry the conversation.
His thoughts began to wander.
“Scan the code. Add me on WeChat.”
Su Qingwu held her phone out toward him.
“O–oh, right!”
Lu Cheng scrambled to pull out his phone. Add her? Of course he had to!
Beep!
“QingwuFeiyang has accepted your friend request.”
Just as Lu Cheng began fantasizing about where to take her on their next date, she spoke calmly:
“Since both of us are only here because our families forced us, why don’t we just cooperate? That way we can both give them an explanation.”
The smile on Lu Cheng’s face froze.
C–cooperate?
Not… date?
So she hadn’t actually been interested in him. He was just a convenient stand-in.
Alright, fine. Maybe he was being too full of himself.
Sure, he considered himself decently handsome—just a notch below Wu Yanzu and a shade shy of Takeshi Kaneshiro—but it wasn’t like a woman of her caliber would fall for him at first sight.
If she wanted a shield, then so be it. He could use her as one too. Tonight, he’d have something to report to his mother.
“See you!”
“Bye.”
They parted ways. Lu Cheng hopped on his Yadea e-bike and sped back to Sanliqiao Police Station.
At the Su household, her mother Shen Fang had already opened the door. Their house was right by the East Gate, meaning she had clearly seen Lu Cheng drop her daughter off.
And as the deputy captain of the Criminal Investigation Unit, Su Qingwu was keenly aware her mother had been peeking out from the kitchen window.
Which was precisely why she’d accepted Lu Cheng’s WeChat request.
It was the first time in her life she had ever added a man on her own initiative.
Shen Fang beamed. “Daughter, how was the blind date?”
“Not bad.”
“What about the boy?”
“Not bad.”
“When are you planning to have children?”
“…Soon.”
“What? Really?!” Shen Fang’s face lit up with grandmotherly excitement.
Changing shoes in the entryway, Su Qingwu nearly choked. She snapped her head up in alarm.
“Children?”
Hold on—wasn’t her mother skipping a few steps here? Forget marriage, she had jumped straight to childbirth!
If you love kids so much, you go have another one!
Of course, Su Qingwu didn’t dare voice her inner complaint. She still valued her life.
“Mom, this was only our first meeting.”
“First meeting or not, young people these days do flash marriages all the time.”
Utterly speechless, Su Qingwu slipped back to her room. Talking to Shen Fang was a nightmare.
Behind her, her mother’s voice trailed after: “When are you bringing that boy over to meet me properly…?”
Back at Sanliqiao Police Station—
Chief Chen Weimin found himself torn. On his left was top graduate Yuan Jie, on his right Lu Cheng.
He had originally decided to mentor Yuan Jie personally. But after seeing Lu Cheng’s performance, he was tempted to take Lu Cheng instead.
“Chief, you called for me?”
Veteran officer Zhao Han entered, cheerful. After all, the rookie assigned to him was none other than Lu Cheng, now the talk of the station.
Catching a fugitive on his first day—luck or not, this kid had potential. Train him well, and Zhao Han’s reputation as a mentor would soar too.
“Old Zhao, why don’t you take Yuan Jie? I’ll take Lu Cheng myself.”
Zhao Han’s smile vanished. “Chief, didn’t we already settle this? You gave me Lu Cheng—now you’re taking him back? What kind of example does that set? A chief’s word should mean something.”
“I already mapped out his training plan, tailored just for him! If you swap him out, I’ll have to redo everything!”
“And another thing—I even had his eight characters of birth fortune read. Turns out, his fate matches perfectly with mine! If you give me Yuan Jie instead, I’ll have to get another reading. Three hundred yuan a session!”
Chen Weimin’s temples throbbed. “Fine, fine! Stop babbling—Lu Cheng stays with you!”
Zhao Han immediately broke into a grin. “See, wasn’t that simple? I’ll get back to work then!”
The chief sighed. Forget it. A top student like Yuan Jie wasn’t a bad pick either.
…
Meanwhile, Lu Cheng was riding his Yadea scooter back through the bustling Old Street.
Suddenly, his system skill [Flycatcher] activated on its own.
“Suspect nearby!”
Lu Cheng’s heart skipped.
“Within twenty meters!”
Looking up, he spotted a faint green laser-like dot hovering in the air. A fly.
Parking his e-bike, he trailed after it. The fly darted forward and settled onto a man’s shoulder.
Target locked.
So that was how the skill worked—pinpointing suspects through the fly.
Excitement flashed in Lu Cheng’s eyes as he observed.
The man was thin, wearing glasses, scanning the street. His gaze lingered on the self-service ATMs across the road—not on the machines, but on the people coming out of them.
Hunting for prey.
A pickpocket.
The man’s head turned left and right, alert to his surroundings. His caution screamed of a veteran thief.
Lu Cheng turned away casually, bought a bottle of water from a corner shop, then walked off in the opposite direction.
He was still a rookie with zero field experience. A tail this close could get him exposed. Better to stay back.
Fortunately, Flycatcher tracked within 200 meters. As long as he stayed inside the radius, he wouldn’t lose the target.
A few minutes later, a middle-aged man emerged from the ATM, clutching a bulging briefcase. His face looked nervous.
The pickpocket’s eyes lit up like a wolf spotting meat. Spitting out a toothpick, he melted into the man’s shadow.
And Lu Cheng, silent as a ghost, followed behind him.
The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind.
Crowds thickened ahead. The thief quickened his pace, sidling closer to his target.
Then, in a flash, a sharp blade appeared between his fingers.
Rip!
The briefcase split open. Wads of bills tumbled out.
The thief’s hand scooped them up, wrapped them in newspaper, and stuffed them into his waistband in one fluid motion.
By the time the middle-aged man realized his bag had gone light and shouted “Thief!” the culprit had already vanished into the throng.
The man lifted his briefcase, horrified by the gaping hole at the bottom. Fifty thousand yuan, gone in seconds.
He cried out desperately, fumbling to dial the police.
