- Chapter 44 - Hunters Often Appear in the Form of Prey
At that moment, Luo Yong’s mind was consumed with a single thought: he desperately wanted to catch the Yellow Sparrow gang.
Two days of stakeout had yielded nothing, and on top of that, their own identities had been exposed.
Now, unable to be on-site, he had no choice but to watch the monitor feed. Truth be told, it was frustrating.
Earlier, he had criticized Lu Cheng for lacking patience. Ironically, the team leader himself was growing a little impatient.
Director Lü Zhengbo, however, remained calm. He trusted that Lu Cheng had his own plan, and he wanted to hear it out.
“Captain Luo is right,” Lu Cheng’s voice came through the office radio, calm and measured. “This gang isn’t simple, so I can’t reveal their identities just yet.”
The office fell into an unusual silence, only Lu Cheng’s voice echoing through the radio.
“I’ve been observing them for a long time. After entering the station, they’ve scoped out every point and chosen their targets, but they haven’t acted immediately.”
“Why?”
“They’ve been looking for us while we’ve been looking for them.”
The words hit everyone like a thunderclap.
They’ve been looking for us too?!
Some officers were slow to process the meaning. But Lü Zhengbo’s mind immediately clicked.
“You mean… they’re trying to find our undercover officers at the station?”
Next to him, Luo Yong and Chen Feng both tensed.
Lu Cheng continued, “Most likely, yes. They want to confirm the positions of our plainclothes officers so they can act right under our noses.”
Lü Zhengbo nodded. “Makes sense. They won’t move until they’re sure of the situation.”
Lu Cheng chuckled lightly. “Director Lü, there’s an old saying: hunters often appear in the form of prey.”
“So we need to expose ourselves first. If I were to reveal their positions now, and our people knew about them, our exposure would be too obvious—they might even catch on.”
“Just like in the movie The Dream Factory, the person who’s toughest-mouthed refuses to speak no matter what.”
After explaining his plan, Luo Yong and Chen Feng both drew in deep breaths.
This kid… his mind is far more cunning than we imagined.
Hunters appearing as prey?!
Wow… he’s playing a game of wits with the gang!
The officers in the office were shocked by Lu Cheng’s analysis.
They began to question: was he really just a trainee? How could someone so young think like a veteran detective with years of experience?
And among the seven or eight seasoned undercover officers in the station hall, only Lu Cheng had noticed this gang.
He saw everything!
It was unbelievable.
Lü Zhengbo nodded, approving Lu Cheng’s plan. He turned to Luo Yong. “What do you think about Lu Cheng’s proposal?”
“Feasible.”
Luo Yong clenched his fist. After years of anti-pickpocket operations, he had seen his share of cunning thieves.
A gang as clever as the Yellow Sparrow would never act rashly.
If they wanted to play smart, then they’d play along—deliberately exposing minor flaws to lure the gang.
If Luo Yong had been on-site, he would have thought the same.
The difference? Lu Cheng was just a trainee, on the force for less than a week. If he suggested this, no one would believe it.
The team agreed. Luo Yong issued the order.
Ding Chengzhi, Lao Ke, and Fatty would no longer hide too well. They would intentionally leave small flaws for the Yellow Sparrow gang to notice.
The others? They would wait for Lu Cheng.
Following the plan, Ding Chengzhi, Lao Ke, and Fatty began their staged performance.
Each took a different position in the hall, their eyes scanning the crowd.
A savvy officer could tell if someone was plainclothes just by looking into their eyes.
Sure enough, the young couple noticed Fatty first. The woman even snapped a photo with her DSLR, capturing his face.
She smirked with satisfaction—she had found an undercover officer.
The young man then spotted Lao Ke, seemingly reading a newspaper but secretly observing passengers.
Another plainclothes officer discovered.
Finally, Ding Chengzhi was noticed by an elderly passenger in the corner.
He had deliberately bulged the butt of his gun under his clothes. The old man noticed immediately and smiled subtly.
Two patrolling officers, three undercover—once the gang spotted the plainclothes, they relaxed their vigilance.
Now, the Yellow Sparrow would start feeding.
At that moment, Lu Cheng reported the four individuals’ appearances and positions over the radio.
On the monitors, Luo Yong’s team quickly identified all but the elderly man hidden in a corner.
It’s them?!
The other undercover officers in the hall locked onto their positions.
The net was ready.
Lu Cheng noticed an empty seat next to the yellow-haired youth and boldly walked over.
The youth, engrossed in his mobile game, didn’t even notice.
Lu Cheng couldn’t predict the gang’s next move, so he took a gamble and sat beside him.
The youth’s eyes stayed on the game, but his peripheral vision caught Lu Cheng. Seeing him wearing headphones and playing a game horizontally, he didn’t suspect a thing.
“Defeat” flashed on the speaker, and the youth slammed his phone in frustration.
“Damn! A bunch of noobs!”
Lu Cheng finished his round—his character, Lü Bu, got MVP again, carrying the team.
The yellow-haired youth glanced at Lu Cheng’s screen, eyes lighting up. He patted Lu Cheng on the shoulder.
“Nice, man! You’re good! Are you on WeChat or QQ? Let’s duo queue!”
“QQ, duo queue? Are you serious?”
“Damn it! I’m a marksman with a hundred points in Glory!”
“Really? Let’s go, one match. I have to check tickets in half an hour.”
“Let’s go! Let’s go!” The youth, like an addicted gamer, dove in.
The two began duo-queuing.
At the command center, Lü Zhengbo and Luo Yong watched the scene on the monitors, incredulous.
A cop and a thief playing games together?!
It seemed absurd—but this was exactly the stage for the operation.
The four hidden officers had already locked onto the other three gang members—once the thieves acted, they would strike.
Meanwhile, Ding Chengzhi, Lao Ke, and Fatty pretended to search for suspicious passengers.
Lu Cheng and the yellow-haired youth were deep into their game, the chaos masking the real operation.
“Brother Lü Bu, help me! I’m gonna die! Die! Die!”
“Damn, move better!”
Lü Bu descended from the heavens, instantly wiping out the enemy and saving a sliver of life for Luban.
Five minutes later, the enemy base exploded.
The yellow-haired youth, having been frustrated in several matches, finally won and slapped Lu Cheng.
“Not bad, man! Impressive!”
“You still need to practice that marksman,” Lu Cheng said, standing up.
“You’re not coming?”
“Nope, gotta check tickets.”
“One more match! One more!”
“Nope, you’re terrible!”
The youth glared.
“You’re the bad player here!”
“Shut up! Your Lv Bu is trash!”
“You’re asking for it!”
The youth swung a punch at Lu Cheng.
“Damn!”
Lu Cheng, blood pumping, countered instinctively.
The two fought, and passengers quickly stepped aside, pointing and whispering, enjoying the spectacle.
Lu Cheng didn’t use any formal combat technique, just exchanged wild blows.
They even toppled a bench in the scuffle.
Lu Cheng played along, testing the yellow-haired youth—trying to see what he was really up to.
Then, in the next instant…
Blood suddenly streamed down the youth’s face, covering him completely.
Lu Cheng froze.
The surrounding crowd gasped. “Ah! His head! So much blood!”
The yellow-haired youth grabbed Lu Cheng’s arm, shouting at the top of his lungs:
“He’s dead! He’s dead! Call the police! Call the police!”
