Chapter 278: Nangong Wan’s Past

Looking at the somewhat dilapidated side courtyard before him, Wu Li’s expression grew complicated. From what he knew and his observations of the Nangong family along the way, they shouldn’t have a rundown side courtyard like this.

Yet not only was there one—it was Nangong Wan’s residence. This stirred an uneasy feeling deep within Wu Li.

At that moment, Nangong Wan, her back turned to Wu Li, let out a sigh. Her tone was flat, revealing no emotion as she spoke.

“My father is the head of the Nangong Family—the middle-aged man you just saw—a peak Immortal Venerable.”

“My relationship with him is not good at all, so after I became an adult, I left the Nangong Family. This time I came back only because he said my mother wanted to see me one last time. That’s why I returned. Is there anything else you want to know?”

At this point, Nangong Wan turned to face Wu Li, her expression calm as she asked.

Wu Li hesitated for a moment, then sighed and said,

“You must have had a very difficult time living in the Nangong Family all those years.”

After all, with the Nangong Family’s strength and Nangong Wan’s status, there’s no way she should have been living in such a shabby place. But since she was, it was clear that those eighteen years hadn’t been easy for her.

Nangong Wan clearly hadn’t expected Wu Li to say something like that. She froze, then after a long pause, muttered softly.

“It was just a little hardship. It’s all in the past now.”

“Nangong Jun has many wives and numerous children. My mother was one he casually got involved with outside the family. Because they coveted my mother’s beauty, they deceived her.”

“By the time my mother realized what was happening, she was already pregnant with me. There was no other choice. For my sake, my mother had to plead humbly with Nangong Jun and moved into the Nangong estate.”

“But since my mother’s talent was low, the Nangong Family didn’t want to invest too many resources in her. After helping her break through to the Great Emperor Realm, they stopped interfering with her.”

“And because of my birth, my mother couldn’t leave the Nangong Family. But because of my mother’s status, I was looked down on by the Nangong Family’s members. That’s why I left after reaching adulthood.”

“If it hadn’t been for my mother, I probably would never have come back.”

Her mother was Nangong Wan’s only attachment, the sole tie that bound her to the Nangong Family. Without her, she wouldn’t have set foot there again, even if it meant dying.

Hearing Nangong Wan’s words, Wu Li fell silent for a moment, deeply moved inside, before slowly saying,

“If you ever need anything, just tell me. We’re friends. I’ll do everything I can to help you.”

“Just friends?”

Nangong Wan heard Wu Li’s words and replied with a hint of disappointment in her voice, but it was so quiet that Wu Li didn’t catch it.

“What?”

“Nothing. Alright, you can stay here and cultivate first. I’m going to see my mother.”

After saying this, Nangong Wan intended to go find her mother, but Wu Li spoke up.

“I’ll go with you. I have a bad feeling, like something might happen.”

Nangong Wan clearly didn’t expect Wu Li to say that. From everything she had observed about him during that period, Wu Li seemed like a stubborn fellow who only cared about cultivation and never said things like this.

But now was obviously not the time to reject Wu Li. Besides, since returning to the Nangong family, she had vaguely sensed a sense of unease—she just hadn’t yet activated her Fate Eye to see what was going on.

After Nangong Wan nodded in agreement, Wu Li followed her in the direction of another part of the Nangong estate.

On the way, Nangong Wan explained, “My mother used to live with me, but after I began cultivating, Nangong Jun took her to another place—right up ahead, here we are.”

As Nangong Wan stopped, a side courtyard similar in condition to her residence appeared before them.

However, both Nangong Wan and Wu Li’s expressions turned serious after stopping, as they detected only one very powerful presence inside. It was obviously not her mother’s.

According to Nangong Wan, the Nangong family would never waste too many resources on her mother, but the presence they sensed inside had already reached the level of an Immortal Venerable.

“That’s Nangong Jun.”

Nangong Wan’s face darkened; she had recognized it. The presence they sensed was that of her biological father, Nangong Jun.

At that moment, Wu Li reached out and placed a hand on Nangong Wan’s shoulder reassuringly.

“Let’s go in first and see what’s going on.”

“Okay.”

Nangong Wan nodded gloomily and, accompanied by Wu Li, entered the side courtyard.

After entering the side courtyard, Nangong Jun faced away from them and spoke softly, “You’ve arrived.”

“Father, where is my mother?” Nangong Wan asked directly, without beating around the bush.

Hearing Nangong Wan’s words, Nangong Jun let out a sigh, and a wave of sadness slowly appeared on his face.

“Yuehua, my Yuehua… she passed away a month ago.”

“What!”

Nangong Wan felt her heart sink at Nangong Jun’s words, nearly losing control. Disbelief washed over her as she turned to him angrily.

“How is that possible, Nangong Jun? What happened to my mother? She’s a Great Emperor—her lifespan should be at least a million years. How could she have died? Besides, during this time, she had already cultivated to the level of a Mortal World Immortal. How could she have perished?”

“Ah, Yuehua was attacked by a Demon Beast at the peak of the Mortal World Immortal stage while searching for opportunities outside. She burned her origin energy to escape back to the Nangong family, but by the time I discovered it, there was nothing left to be done.”

As he spoke, Nangong Jun’s voice was full of sorrow. After all, to him Yuehua had been a prized possession, and her death naturally caused him some grief.

But Nangong Wan completely refused to believe it. In her memory, her mother was extremely cautious about her life—there was no way she would recklessly enter a Secret Realm.

“That’s impossible. Six months ago, mother contacted me, saying she wanted to see me. How could something happen so conveniently right after that?”

“Nangong Wan, you have to believe this was truly an accident. Your mother… she’s really gone.”

Nangong Jun looked at Nangong Wan, his tone calming from the sorrow before, as if he had already come to terms with her mother’s death.

But Nangong Wan was not someone to be fooled. There was absolutely no way her mother’s death was as simple as it seemed—there was definitely more to the story.
